Scary People

Their Worst Nightmare?

Hey Kids!

I have always been a fan of the common aphorism that if voting actually changed anything then they would make it illegal. For many years now the main reason I have continued to vote is because people died for my right to do it. However, I consider voting to be the least effective activist tactic of which I am aware and I’ve always largely considered it a waste of time.

There is also the secondary reason that since I never vote for Republicans and rarely for Democrats and since I always write in a bunch of people, then voting also provides me with an opportunity to throw a little handful of sand into the cogs of their corrupt machine.

However: The fact that the Republicans are indeed now making voting illegal for large numbers of people in pretty much all they states that they control is telling. I’m not losing any sleep over Republicans pulling dirty tricks and doing nasty stuff — I expect nothing less from them — but I am fascinated by the fact that they are evidently so utterly terrified of people voting.

What, exactly, are they so afraid of? Hmmm…

Good News!

I know it is considered supremely gauche to speak ill of the recently dead, but over the course of the last century Antonin Scalia was one of the most effective lackeys for the 1% that ever existed — and so for the sake of the human race I’m afraid that I am very glad that piece of human shite is gone from our world.

As far as the practical implications, the Supreme Court is now split 4-4 and since Congress is dysfunctional then it is likely to be a very long time before we have a ninth justice. This means that along with Congress, the Court is also neutered — which is probably a good thing considering the recent record of both bodies.

In addition, it is likely that there are going to be up to three more vacancies on the Court in the near future — and one thing I will say for the Democrats is they tend to pick Supreme Court justices that are not nearly as vile as the ones that the Republicans tend to favour.

I’m still not voting for Hillary Clinton, though…

My Favourite President

My favourite president was William Henry Harrison. He contracted pneumonia almost immediately upon assuming office and then died three months later, meaning that William Henry Harrison did less damage to our country whilst president than any other that we’ve ever had.

Am I the Victim or the Crime?

Of all the women in the whole world who are in prison, fully one-third (one out of three) is imprisoned in the United States.

West Virginia has a higher percentage of its women in prison than any other place on the planet.

92% of the women in American prisons have experienced violent abuse.

A Victim of a Crime

I just stumbled over this when I was checking on free parking for President’s Day on the city’s website: A 28-year old man is claiming that he was taking a break from a long hike near Boulevard Road on the Woodland Trail during the afternoon when a complete stranger without provocation came up behind him and stabbed him several times.

He was seriously injured. The police could not find the perpetrator.

This just seemed like a weird story and very un-Olympia-like to me. Maybe I’ll do some journalistic follow-through.

While we’re on the subject of local news, I just discovered this handy little webpage where the city posts ‘news releases’:

Bernie vs. the Machine

[Barack Obama] was the recipient of the largest number of Wall Street donations of anybody running on the Democratic side ever.

       —Hillary Clinton

The looking glass quality of this election just took a Great Leap Forward in my mind when I heard Hillary Clinton say that. Hillary Clinton was actually trying to spin the fact that Wall Street put Obama into the White House in a positive light!

I have been screaming about the fact that Barack Obama is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Wall Street War Machine at the top of my lungs for almost exactly eight years now — and I have been feeling as if I were yelling into a vacuum the entire time. Even as Mr. Obama far exceeded my most dire predictions over the years, the big blind American liberal kept their rose-coloured glasses firmly in place and now Hillary Clinton thinks she can ride to the White House on Mr. Obama’s coattails.

After my screaming into a vacuum for eight years with minimal effect, Mrs. Clinton just managed to inform many millions of Americans of the fact that their president is a tool of Wall Street just by saying that once during a debate on the television machine.

Hillary Clinton evidently expects America to believe that Wall Street pumps hundreds of millions into political campaigns with no agenda other than fulfilling their civic duty.

Hillary Clinton evidently expects America to believe that that this torrent of cash has absolutely no influence upon the decisions that politicians make.

Anyway, I am still convinced that the Democratic Party Machine will pull something out of their bag of dirty little tricks to make sure that Bernie Sanders does not win the nomination. There are several legal and several not-so-legal methods of doing this. The ‘Dean Scream’ was one example wherein they took down a potentially problematic candidate (form their point of view, anyway) over literally nothing but a clip taken out of context and played over and over. Then there’s the Elliot Spitzer and Gary Hart solution — though I have trouble believing that Bernie Sanders has any hot babes stashed away on his yacht or anything.

One ‘legal’ possibility is a procedure the Democratic Party implemented after George McGovern’s insurgent candidacy prevailed to win the Democratic Party nomination in 1972 only to subsequently get totally creamed by Richard Nixon in one of the most lopsided elections in American history.

After that, the Democratic Party created ‘super delegates’.

‘Super delegates’, as you’ve probably already guessed, are there to help assure that party insiders can trump the voice of the people.

The party insiders obviously know better than the unwashed masses, after all! Just look at the bang-up job that they’ve been doing recently!

Anyway, in addition to the delegates that are won by the candidates in the various primaries and caucuses, these permanent unelected ‘super delegates’ cast additional votes, and their votes count just as much as those representing the votes of the people. These ‘super delegates’ generally consist of congressmen, senators, governors and other elected officials who represent the Democratic Party élite. Since these ‘super delegates’ are free to support any candidate they want completely independent of any election results, connected candidates often suck them up to them and these ‘super delegates’ often align themselves very early in the campaign season to help build momentum.

For instance, in New Hampshire, Sanders wiped the floor with Clinton by a margin of 60% to 38% — but they split the delegates from New Hampshire evenly thanks to these unelected ‘super delegates’ choosing almost unanimously to vote for party insider Mrs. Clinton rather than the very clear choice of people who —in many cases — were their own constituents.

Thus, the decisions are made in secret back rooms rather than in the election booth — which is just where entrenched party insiders always want them to happen.

Overall, Clinton sits far ahead of Sanders when you factor in these super delegates. As of early August of last year — months before the first ballot was cast — the Clinton campaign had reported a super delegate count of more than 400 out of an available 712.

At that time Sanders had 8 super delegates committed to him. [Eight]

That’s not all: Of those, fully one-eighth of Mr. Sanders’ votes consist of Mr. Sanders himself for — ironically — Mr. Sanders is himself one of these ‘super delegates’.

Now: There are 712 super delegates out of a total 4,800 Democratic convention delegates so the super delegates constitute about 15% of the total. That’s surely not trivial — but it’s also not completely determinative of the outcome, so if Bernie can come in with enough of a lead then this may not matter.

However, if he comes in with a slim lead — they could matter very much.

And the super delegate situation this election is quite striking, especially when compared to Barack Obama’s situation at the same point of his initial election run. For instance, Bernie Sanders’ historic donor base has three times the number of donors that Obama had at this point. Mr. Sanders has also done far better in the early states than Obama did. In the national polls, Mr. Sanders has 37% of the vote, which is far more than Obama had.

Yet — at that point during the 2008 election Obama already had over 60 super delegates committed to his cause. Even Bill Richardson had 25.

Again: Sanders had 8. (Eight.)

(Currently Mr. Sanders has just over 40 while Mrs. Clinton has 394.)

Yes, John Edwards was also in the picture at that time along with Mrs. Clinton — but regardless: The point is that compared to Obama, Sanders is totally kicking ass.

You can track the ‘Super Delegate’ count here:

The Media Machine has been trying its absolute best to ignore Bernie Sanders — but it has reached the point they can no longer do that.

In addition, Mr. Sanders’ complete lack of support from the Democratic Party is in-your-face and it is brutal. The Democratic Party’s prejudice is so blatant and outrageous that I’m surprised Bernie supporters aren’t raising more stink about it. The Party often ignores marginal candidates but this complete lack of support for a serious candidate that is winning lots of major support is also not in any way shape or form comparable with how things have ever gone down with either Obama or with any other previous candidate — ‘underdog’ or not — that has ever run for the Democratic nomination for over the last 40 years (that I can find, anyway.)

While that lack of support is maddening — it is also evidence of Mr. Sanders’ credibility.

If the Machine hates him so much then he must have something serious going on…

‘Charity’ Clinton Style

And as for the ‘good works’ being done by the oh-so benevolent Clinton Foundation?

I have a perfect representational example: Take Haiti!

The Clinton Foundation certainly took Haiti!

In point of fact, the Clinton Foundation was a central factor in taking Haiti straight to Hell, in point of fact!

Haiti is the result of the only successful slave revolt in history. White World has never forgiven Haiti for that.

The United States has basically been running Haiti for its own benefit since 1915, when American troops conducted an armed invasion and then occupied it until 1934 — though they never really left, if you know what I mean.

There is so much history here — both past and recent — that I just can’t go into it now lest I get lost in that vast forest.

However, you should know that Haiti is currently experiencing chaos and violence due to widespread election fraud being conducted by the American-backed ruling party, and it is very possible that you don’t know that since this is another figoobliation that the American media is almost completely ignoring.

The reason the current scumbags are in power in Haiti is because the Americans in general and Bill Clinton in particular put them there — for Slick Willie became intimately involved in Haiti’s affairs during his presidency and the Clinton Foundation continues to play a very large and very nasty role in Haiti to this day.

Every time they have free elections Haitians invariably elect people who think Haitian resources should benefit Haitians rather than Americans and so the US is on a never-ending quest to prevent democracy from ever breaking out in Haiti.

In February of 2004 Bill Clinton played a direct personal role in arranging the coup against (and the associated kidnapping of) Jean Bertrand Aristide, the popular and democratically elected president of Haiti.

When the Haitian earthquake happened, the Clinton Foundation was there with the Answer: Sweat shops and luxury hotels! (With all the profits flowing into Western bank accounts, of course…)

The international community, including the U.S. government, pledged $9.6 billion. Nearly six years later — although about $7.6 billion of that taxpayer money has indeed been disbursed — there is virtually nothing to show for it except a few hotels and a few sweatshops. Six years after the earthquake hundreds of thousands of Haitians still remain without adequate shelter.

And remember: Most of that ‘aid’ money never gets outside the beltway much less makes its way to Haiti — and of the barely detectable trickle that does actually reach Haiti, virtually NONE of that makes it through the Haitian government’s vast and sticky web of corruption to reach the actual people of Haiti.

Of USAID contracts in Haiti, for example, more than 50% of those payments went directly into the accounts of contractors in the DC area. Only 1% went directly to Haitian companies or organizations.

Scary People & Not

I was once listening to a right-wing shock-jock and he said this: “I went into this bathroom and there were three really scary guys in there — I mean, they were white, but they were still really scary…

Well, I would highly recommend you watch this interview with Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Mr. Coates is a brilliant, articulate, and a passionate yet calm observer of racism in America — and he is absolutely not threatening or scary!

I mean — he’s black — but he’s still really not scary!

Presidential Predictions

I pride myself of my political acumen and on my ability to intuit hidden political agendas. Over the years my predictions about political events and politicians have almost always been spot on.

When it comes to predicting the actions of the American voter, though — not so much.

Amongst my more famous predictions concerning American voters was in 1980 when I predicted that Americans would never elect a B-grade movie actor that they could go could watch on TV talking to a chimpanzee.

Another was under the theory that no one who voted for Al Gore in 2000 would be likely to switch their votes to Bush in 2004 while a lot of former Bush voters were likely to be very disenchanted with Georgie’s performance — and since in addition Al Gore had actually won more votes than George W. Bush in 2000 — then I firmly predicted that Bush would never win reelection in 2004.

True, Mr. Bush stole that election (he actually stole both of his elections) but he had to garner enough actual votes in order to be able to steal it in a credible manner and considering his performance as president — I find that he could still do even that to be utterly baffling.

In that same vein, not too long ago I predicted that Donald Trump would be a flash in the pan and that Jeb Bush would probably end up as the Republican nominee facing Hillary Clinton.

David Cay Johnston is, in fact, the only observer that I know of who predicted that Trump would be a major factor in the Republican primary and Mr. Johnston even predicted that Trump might win it.

Mr. Johnston is evidently much more intuitive with the voting public than I am.

Mr. Johnston agrees with me, by the way, that should Mr. Trump win the nomination then that would assure that almost anyone that runs against him would win. (Trump is trumping everyone else on both positive and negative views in the general public.) Mr. Johnston did add the caveat that should there be a major ‘terrorist’ attack next October then Trump might even win the election — but otherwise, like me, he figures that only insane people will vote for Mr. Trump — especially if any of a score of major skeletons that are still not very well hidden inside several of Mr. Trump’s closets are ever exposed. Mr. Johnston seemed surprised that the press was not pressing on Mr. Trump about his drug-dealing private pilot or about Mr. Trump’s mob connections or over the fact Mr. Trump is the biggest slumlord in the world or Mr. Trump’s many refusals to pay his employees or Mr. Trump’s many refusals to pay many people who provided many services and/or goods. (Mr. Johnston’s surprise is evidence that he is more in tune with American voters than he is with the American Media Machine — otherwise he would know that ignoring nasty things concerning public figures is what the Media Machine does best!)

Mr. Johnston also agrees with me that a Trump nomination would mean the end of the Republican Party as any kind of viable entity for the foreseeable future — and thus all good leftists should do everything they can to assure that Mr. Trump wins that nomination!

I’ve been saying it for years: The Republicans are toast.

Now we need to take down the Democrats.

It’s time to get to work…

The Thunderbolt Calendar

Week of February 18th thru February 24th, 2016

1) FYI Section:

1A) Economics for Everyone Reading

Since this event requires you to read a book first, I thought I’d give you a head’s up. They’ll be meeting to discuss this book early next month.

This came from Matt:

Economics for Everyone’s next featured book is Black Against the Empire by Joshua Bloom and Waldo E. Martin.

We will be meeting at the Mixx96.1 conference room, near Cafe Vita,  Saturday March 5th from 1-3PM to discuss the book.

“In Oakland, California, in 1966, community college students Bobby Seale and Huey Newton armed themselves, began patrolling the police, and promised to prevent police brutality. Unlike the Civil Rights Movement that called for full citizenship rights for blacks within the U.S., the Black Panther Party rejected the legitimacy of the U.S. government and positioned itself as part of a global struggle against American imperialism. In the face of intense repression, the Party flourished, becoming the center of a revolutionary movement with offices in 68 U.S. cities and powerful allies around the world.

Black against Empire is the first comprehensive overview and analysis of the history and politics of the Black Panther Party. The authors analyze key political questions, such as why so many young black people across the country risked their lives for the revolution, why the Party grew most rapidly during the height of repression, and why allies abandoned the Party at its peak of influence. Bold, engrossing, and richly detailed, this book cuts through the mythology and obfuscation, revealing the political dynamics that drove the explosive growth of this revolutionary movement, and its disastrous unraveling. Informed by twelve years of meticulous archival research, as well as familiarity with most of the former Party leadership and many rank-and-file members, this book is the definitive history of one of the greatest challenges ever posed to American state power.”

For each book we will host a discussion of the reading and collaboratively decide what to do with our new insights: plan direct actions, give presentations, conduct local group research, or something else. The success of these reading groups depends upon active participation, so please come having read the book (or simply as much as you can) and ready to share comments, ideas, and questions!

If you can’t afford the books, we have you covered. Just message us with your name, primary email, and phone number and we will get you the reading.

1B) Update on Title 26

This alert came from Don:

Title 26, the Increased Enforcement Code on land use, is scheduled for a vote by Thurston County Board of Commissioners (BOCC) on Tuesday, February 23 in Building 1, room 280 at their 2 o’clock meeting. Public comment will be open.

Last fall, under continuous protest from rural residents against this egregious encroachment on property rights, the BOCC tabled Title 26 until now. If adopted on February 23rd, it will place every rural property owner in jeopardy of being penalized when seeking to permit land or home improvements.

Title 26 adds Civil Penalties to land use.

  • Civil Penalties are punitive in nature and will make all land use violations criminal misdemeanors.
  • The commissioners have been informed by attorneys that Title 26 lacks due process. Their own legal counsel has testified that current infraction and negotiation procedures are the most effective enforcement tool. If Title 26 is passed, law suits will be filed at taxpayer expense.
  • The Board is abdicating their responsibility to represent rural Thurston residents by removing themselves from the process and appointing an unelected director to arbitrarily decide penalty enforcement.
  • Each day of violation will be seen as a “new violation” and will incur a daily penalty of $263 or $513 accruing up to 30 days; a potential $15,390 increase in mitigation costs.
  • No permits will be approved for new improvements if there is an existing violation on the property of any kind.
  • No more “as is” sales or purchases of homes.

Title 26 will ruin lives and slowly eliminate our sovereign right to be self-responsible and live an independent self-sufficient lifestyle on the land.

Please act now! Flood the phones and email to rescind Title 26

  • E-mail the commissioners private assistants
  • Phone the commissioners private offices
  • Include your thoughts on the above points of fact

Cathy Wolfe: 357-2470

Bud Blake: 786-5414

Sandra Romero: 786-5747

  • Let’s show up in mass at the meeting on February 23rd
  • Sign up to speak for 3 minutes and make your sentiments known

Climate Community Gathering: Where Do We Go From Here?

1 pm @ United Churches Fireside Room, 110 11th Ave SE

This message came from Bev:

This meeting will be a follow-up opportunity for those who attended the January 31st presentation of Naomi Klein’s movie ‘This Changes Everything’ and the discussion afterwards to explore and seek direction as we plan what we will do to stand-up to climate change and preserve a livable climate for our children and grandchildren.

Our institutions and leaders have not been able to effectively act to mitigate this greenhouse gas pollution threat to life as we know it on earth. Thus, it has become imperative for us in civil society to act to effect change. We have myrid options available to us in our local community. The Olympia FOR’s Confronting the Climate Crisis group has made a difference in our community; we will be even more successful with you on our team!

Please don’t miss this important exchange of thoughts and ideas! Bring your most creative self to the Fireside Room to brainstorm with your friends and neighbors who are all in this together.

See you there.
