The Official Thunderbolt

Most Under-covered

and/or Most Mis-Covered

Stories of 2015!!!

Hey Kids!

Media Island now has its 501 C-3 status back. (We temporarily lost it when some paperwork wasn’t filed in time.)

Also, here is a link that will allow you to both listen to KOWA online AND to see a rough schedule of our upcoming shows:

One more thing: Someone expressed an interest in checking out my novels. (I’m afraid I have forgotten who.) You (or anyone else) can find downloadable PDF files of my novels here:

Shameless self-promotion! An American tradition!

Now — on to the Thunderbolt!

Shifting Blame

I have been pointing out for years now that the Machine is converting the United States into a Third World country that will have a small handful of very rich people and vast hordes of desperately poor people. The poorer people are then the more they are willing to do for less. The poorer they become the more this is true.

The reason that the Machine keeps insisting that our economy is ‘improving’ and that we are on the ‘road to recovery’ even though both of those contentions are completely untrue is because the 1% doesn’t want us to blame them for what is about to happen (even though what is about to happen is indeed 100% their fault).

They haven’t experienced it firsthand in quite a while now and they have the public all nice and brainwashed and/or cowed – but they know full well what happens when we start breaking out the torches and pitchforks…

This is why they need to convince everyone that everything bad in the economy is the fault of welfare mothers, environmentalists, and schoolteachers.

The Official Thunderbolt Most Under-Covered and/or Mis-Covered Stories of 2015!!!

Believe it or not most of the time the Media Machine isn’t actually lying to you.

Don’t get me wrong; they do indeed lie to you all the time. However, more often than not they don’t need to lie. They need to simply fail to report on utterly vital stories or they need to leave out utterly vital components of the stories that they do report on.

Therefore, here is my list of a few of the most under-covered and/or mis-covered stories of 2015. It is far from comprehensive – under-covered and mis-covered stories are much more numerous than not but this week’s Thunderbolt will at least give you some of what you will need to know in order to make informed decisions.

So here we go…

Media Consolidation

Paper newspapers are in the rather unique position of being economic dinosaurs whilst simultaneously still packing a lot of political punch – which is why rich right-wingers are buying them up.

Consider: Fox News lost big bucks for the first five years of its existence (I believe that it was in the neighborhood of tens of millions per year) yet Rupert Murdoch continued to pump in the cash until it finally became a hit. Jeff Bezos recently purchased the Washington Post. (Alarmingly, he also inked a $6 billion contract with the CIA at about this same time.) Sheldon Adelson not only just purchased the Las Vegas Review Journal but he tried to do it secretly and without anyone knowing. (Ah! Those élites and their dirty little secrets!)

Since these newspapers are economic losers, then ask yourself why economically savvy rich people are gobbling them up? (Hint: In your efforts to resolve this mystery, I would suggest that you refer to the previously mentioned ‘political punch’…)

Machine Consolidation

Speaking of those élites and their dirty little secrets: The richest 1% are projected to own over 50% of the world’s wealth by next year.

This means that 1% of the world’s population will literally own more than the entire rest of the world’s population combined.

Poking Russian Bears

[Thunderbolt Note: This piece falls under the category of a major news story wherein the lead is buried under a ton of crap.]

As Thunderbolt readers know, the United States and NATO have been poking the Russian bear with a very big stick. They have been engaged in very controversial and highly aggressive actions aimed at Russia — and they have been accusing the Russians of being the aggressors whenever Russia defends itself against this blatant and outrageous Western aggression.

Turkey recently shot down a Russian SU-24. They absolutely would not have done such a thing without a go-ahead from the American government.

How many of you know that Mr. Putin has said that if Turkey shoots down any more Russian jetsthen Russia will simply clear the airspace all along the border using their S-400’s?

How many of you know that Vladimir Putin has unequivocally stated that he will use nuclear weapons if his conventional forces are ever threatened?

(And unlike our own president — when Mr. Putin says something like that, you can usually take it to the bank.)

How many of you know that the United States government and NATO have been surrounding both Russia and China with military bases and naval bases for many years and that they are constantly making provocative and aggressive noises at them?

Also, the Media Machine tries to blame Russia and Russia alone for the mess in Syria when actually the mess in Syria can be wholly laid at the doorstep of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton (via their proxies in Saudi Arabia). (Or are Barack and Hillary actually proxies of the Saudi Arabians?)

(Sometimes it’s hard to tell…)

Anyway, the Media Machine is using weasel words to implicitly say that it is Russia and Russia alone that is maintaining Assad in power in Syria.

Actually, though, Hezbollah and Iran are also both fully committed to battling ISIS if not maintaining Assad. (At this point, though, it seems to be either one or the other.) While Russia is providing significant air support, Hezbollah and Iran have each actually sent in many thousands of their finest ground troops.

This is what the Media Machine is not telling you: Russia, Hezbollah, and Iran all consider the Western assault upon Syria to represent an existential threat to their core interests. That is a bridge too far. That is a river too wide. That is a threat that cannot be ignored.

The dangerous thing here is that it seems that if the West wants war then the Russian Iranian Hezbollah cabal seems ready to give them one.

This is what the Media Machine is not telling you.

Thanks to prodigious efforts by our own government, the Middle East seems to me like an explosion waiting to happen.

Pray for the Middle East.

The Empire Strikes Back

The one advantage that we have over the 1% is that while we are absolutely necessary to them, they are not only absolutely unnecessary to us but we’d be a lot better off without them.

They are fully aware of this paradigm even as they spend prodigious effort hiding it from us. What that means is that if enough of us stand up to them then they will back down.

Things got so bad in Central and South America that left wing governments finally managed to come to power in most places and a major anti-colonialist mentality finally began pervading the political landscape of our southern neighbors. Major economic reforms took place and millions were educated and lifted out of poverty.

Every time this happens, though, the Machine sabotages their efforts at every turn.

For instance: In Venezuela, Hugo Chavez – supposedly a corrupt and dictatorial leader – actually legitimately won six elections in a row by ever-increasing majorities. As for political oppression, Hugo Chavez allowed people that participated in a coup attempt against him to not only remain out of jail after their attempt failed (but only after millions of Venezuelans took to the streets) but Sr. Chavez also allowed them to continue owning their newspapers and he allowed them to continue maintaining their positions in the military – meaning that the CIA spooks still had an in to continue playing their dirty little ‘regime-change’ games and so they very diligently and very imaginatively continued to do so.

With a great deal of American assistance the right-wingers trashed the economy and the numerous virulently anti-Chavista newspapers that this supposed dictator continued to allow to exist in his dictatorship continued to spew their lies and propaganda about him.

Then, Hugo Chavez died under what many consider to be very suspicious circumstances.

He was replaced with an inept in uncharismatic shadow named Nicolas Maduro.

With the Western-engineered oil glut and the resultant collapse in world oil prices – intended as a direct assault upon both Russia and Venezuela, both of whom are utterly dependent upon oil exports – and with Sr. Maduro bumbling and stumbling in the face of thejuggernaut of the right-wing-CIA onslaught against him and…

Ta da! It worked! The Venezuelan right-wingers just won an election!

I am truly saddened to have to say this but I’m afraid that Venezuela is most likely about to experience a major counter-revolutionary crisis that is going to create major political and economic chaos — and political and economic chaos almost always leads to violence and to police states.

In other words, it creates the proper seed bed for unadulterated and organic fascism to thrive and to prosper.

In other words, the right-wing Venezuelan Machine is now back in the driver’s seat and operating on its home turf.

This came about because for many years now there has been an ongoing and very serious confrontation between the right-wing Venezuelan élites (armed with piles of American moolah) and everyone else – and the people simply grew sick of it.

However: If the right wingers try to roll back the reforms that Sr. Chavez implemented – and how can they not – then I can guarantee you that Venezuelans will take to the streets by the millions — and if they do, it is a good thing to keep in mind that the Chavistas have powerful allies within the Venezuelan military to counter the many powerful allies that the élites and American puppets also have in the Venezuelan military.

Or maybe that’s not such a good thing since this could easily lead to major bloodbaths.

Similar things are also happening in several other Latin American countries. There have been several significant political victories by far-left wing factions also. This is happening because people are sick of business-as-usual. In and of itself that is a good thing – but it can quickly turn into a bad thing. Circular firing squads are already developing on the left and the right rather than directing our firepower at our mutual enemies – and that is what we really need to counter now.

Thanks to prodigious efforts by our own government, Latin America seems to me like an explosion waiting to happen.

Pray for Latin America.

Raining Radioactivity in the Pacific Ocean

Printing anything anti-nuclear seems to cause a gag-reflex in the American Media Machine. Therefore, as far as they are concerned the Fukushima disaster is yesterday’s news.

Not so. It is a known and documented fact that ever since the tsunami Fukushima has been dumping and continues to dump massive amounts of radioactive crap into the Pacific Ocean.

This dumping of highly radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean constitutes a potential trigger to a process of global radioactive contamination.

Safe, clean, and too cheap to meter? Right. They actually sold that to a lot of people in spite of the fact that nuclear power is actually the most dangerous, dirtiest, and most expensive method of producing power that there is.

Smoke on the Water

I recently watched a documentary wherein some scientists in the Arctic were finding pools of melted water in the Arctic permafrost and then setting them on fire.

A couple of them rather forcefully exploded and literally singed some scientific eyebrows.

This is because there are unimaginable amounts of methane frozen into those endless frozen fields of permafrost and there is a lot more methane frozen into the arctic sea ice and even into the sea floor near the shore. (They don’t call it ‘permafrost’ for nothing.) If that permafrost becomes maybe not so permanent and if a significant portion (or maybe even not such a significant portion) of that permafrost melts then all of that previously frozen methane is going to be released into the atmosphere – and methane is a greenhouse gas several times as potent as carbon dioxide.

You thought Godzilla was bad when they unfroze him? Ha! Compared to methane, Godzilla is a wimpy little wuss!

There are some who say that a massive methane expulsion from melting permafrost is going to turn the entire Earth into a hothouse that will fry all higher life forms and that humanity will soon become extinct as a result. Others question their evidence – but when it comes to controversial shite then the ‘facts’ are often distorted or hidden and frankly I don’t know enough about the players in this particular field to know who to trust and I have no idea of how to untangle all of this ‘he said they said’ crap.

Anyway, with that caveat established, there was a 2013 study published in Nature that projects the possibility of a 50 gigaton ‘burp’ of methane gas from melting arctic permafrost. (No shite, they call this phenomenon a ‘burp’.)

Not only that but they called this possibility “fairly likely” (whatever that means).

50 gigatons of methane is the equivalent of 100 gigatons of carbon dioxide. Since 1850, humans have pumped a grand total of 1475 gigatons of methane into the atmosphere.

I used to have this totally awesome girlfriend who was 4’8” and weighed 85 pounds – but she could shake the walls when she belched. (This was a fact of which she was quite proud, by the way. She often mocked the feeble gastrointestinal excrescences of others – including my own.)

Well – I’m afraid Catherine’s legendary belches couldn’t hold a candle to Mother Nature.

Indeed – if Catherine did try to light a candle during a massive methane ‘burp’ then she would very likely be blow up.

If there is indeed a 50 gigaton ‘burp’ of methane from the Arctic then this ‘burp’ will represent the equivalent of almost 15% of all the greenhouse gasses that humanity has emitted into the atmosphere for over the last 160 years being released almost instantaneously. This study projected that this would lead to an additional 4 to 6 degrees Celsius temperature rise for the planet within a couple of decades. [That would be the equivalent of 7 to 11 degrees Fahrenheit.]

If so, this would indeed make the planet uninhabitable for a good portion of all the higher lifeforms as they currently exist, including – almost certainly – ourselves.

I guess that’s enough to have to worry about this week.

(Don’t worry, though! I’ll have a lot more next week! Yippee!)

In the meanwhile, though – it’s time to get to work…

The Thunderbolt Calendar

Week of December 31st 2015 thru January 6th 2016

1) FYI Section:

1A) Update on West Central Park Project

This message came from Alicia:

The lights and tree looked just great this year and thanks to all for helping to pull it together.

Next Sunday there will be a work party from 11-1 and all the regular maintenance will be tackled along with the planning and preparation for some new and upcoming workshops. One such workshop will be focused on building bee and bird houses with simple supplies and tools. Let us know if you’d like to sign up to build a bee or birdhouse for your own yard! The WCP will be using some of the houses for fundraising for the Park. Come lend your carpentry expertise to a great community cause!

Happy New Year Olympia!

The West Central Park is on the southeast corner of Harrison and Division Streets on the westside.

1B) Plea from Public Citizen

This message came from Public Citizen:

Sometimes it just comes down to raw numbers.

Historically, we’ve been able to count on a generous uptick in donations during the last week of December.

In fact, $1 out of every $8 we raise online for the entire year typically comes in during just those seven days.

For some reason, the pace of contributions THIS December hasn’t picked up yet.

The 2016 election could well be the most divisive in memory, with billionaires and Big Business fully exploiting Citizens United to undermine our democracy.

We’ll be kicking ourselves if we don’t have the real-world financial resources for all of the advocacy, organizing and research we’ll need to do — and which nobody does more of or better than Public Citizen.

Please contribute now.

Thank you.

Robert Weissman

President, Public Citizen

P.S. Don’t forget that whatever you chip in right now will be matched by a longtime supporter who has pledged up to $200,000 in dollar-for-dollar matching funds!

1D) Update from Flush the TPP

This message came from Flush the TPP:

Corporate Greed Resisters!

We welcome our new corporate treaty resisters who have taken the action pledge or joined the Buycott for Trade Justice.

We have great news! The office of the US Trade Representative opened a public comment period yesterday where you can officially tell the administration what you think about the TPP. We make it easy for you.

The USTR is seeking public comments on the impact of the TPP on jobs and the labor market until January 13, 2016. These comments will be formally submitted to the House Ways and Means Committee in Congress.

(When we were fighting to save the internet in 2014, it was the millions of public comments flooding in that pushed the FCC to do the right thing. Now, we have the chance to do that for the TPP.)

CLICK HERE to follow the step-by-step instructions for submitting a comment. We provide information for you and a sample comment to make it easy.

Yes, it will take you a few minutes to navigate the comment page and submit your comment, but every comment is critical because it shows that we will not tolerate these agreements that hurt our communities and drive a global race to the bottom. We hope that you will take time to submit your comment now. Then ask others to do the same.

Momentum for the February 4th Nationwide Day of Action to protest the TPP is building. Cities in the US and Canada have committed to actions and are on the action map. This is the first day that President Obama can officially sign the TPP. Japan Times reports that TPP country leaders are making plans for the signing ceremony.

If there isn’t an action near you, please consider planning one. It can be as simple as holding signs and passing out fliers in a busy area or it can be more elaborate and creative. We are happy to help you. Contact us if you are interested.

1E) Update on I-735 Controversy

This came to me from Jim:

Readers are aware that there have been extensive meetings between CarbonWA and others in Seattle, who have been asking that I-732 signatures NOT be filed, so that a different initiative could proceed without competition. That effort was led by Climate Solutions and Washington Environmental Council, who have proposed running a revenue-positive alternative to the revenue-neutral I-732.

Last night there was a 3 1/2 hour conference call of I-732 volunteers from across the state, discussing the various proposals that have been made.

It appears that the attempt to craft an alternative initiative that met the most important principle of I-732 has failed. This does not surprise me — the “alliance” in Seattle has so many different masters driving it that it’s hard to imagine anything that would satisfy all of them and still effectively control carbon emissions.

That principle, simply, was the imposition of a carbon price on substantially all fossil fuel emissions caused by Washington electricity, petroleum, and gas at a level sufficient to bring Washington emissions down by 80% between now and 2050. That’s what we need to achieve to do our part to prevent catastrophic climate change.

The Seattle “alliance” group actually drafted about six different proposals. You can read them all at the Secretary of State website, Initiatives 801 through 806. I’ve read all of them. Each of the drafts contains significant exemptions from the carbon price; some exempt the Centralia coal plant; others exempt emissions by Boeing and Weyerhaeuser (“trade-dependent” companies). All of them devote the majority of the funds from the carbon fee to new government programs, rather than to the tax relief that I-732 offers. None of them impose a carbon fee sufficient to deal with the problem, independent of the exemptions.

I’ll note that the Carbon Tax Center (in NY) has done extensive modeling of the impact of carbon pricing on emissions, and has concluded that a level of $100/ton, measured in 2010 dollars, is what’s needed to achieve the goal of an 80% reduction by 2050. There is general consensus among economists that this is the right approach. I-732 caps the carbon tax at $100/ton in 2015 dollars, close to that level. The alternative proposals all gradually raise to $100/ton in nominal (not inflation-adjusted) dollars by about 2040 — but measured in 2010 dollars never exceed about $55/ton. So the “alliance” is only going half-way in their proposals.

This message from CarbonWA founder, Yoram Bauman, copied below, indicates that the Executive Board of CarbonWA made the decision to proceed with the signature turn-in.

Obviously that date is still six days away, and things could change. But I’m assuming that there is a signature turn-in on December 30 at the Secretary of State, followed by a party in Olympia, location to be announced.

We will have a very positive initiative to work for in Washington. I hope we can all unite around this largely volunteer-driven effort that has attracted 350,000 signatures. It takes about 1.5 million votes to enact an initiative in a Presidential election year.

4) Media Island Monthly Benefit Brunch

Sunday January 3rd from 11 am to 2 pm @ Media Island, 816 Adams St SE

I was left a voicemail message at the last minute about this, it is 4 am Thursday morning, I’m ready to send the Thunderbolt, but I can’t find any information about this month’s benefit brunch. I know it is happening but I don’t have the details. Evidently no one even created a Facebook event. I think this month’s brunch is with Food and Water Watch but I’m not even sure about that.

I was left a voicemail message at the last minute about this, it is 4 am Thursday morning, I’m ready to send the Thunderbolt, but I can’t find any information about this month’s benefit brunch.

If it sounds like I’m pissed at this example of unorganized organizing it’s because I am.

5) Bonus Tip of the Day:

If you are going to do something, do it right.
