Hoisted By Their Own Pétards!

Hey Kids!

I often use the phrase “hoisted by their own pétards”.

I decided to find out what the hell that even means — and I couldn’t have been more pleased with the results!

Here is the answer as according to Wikipedia:

Pétard comes from the Middle French péter, to break wind, from the root pet, expulsion of intestinal gas, derived from the Latin pedituspast participle of pedere, to break wind, and akin to the Greek bdein, to break wind (Merriam-Webster). In modern French, a pétard is a firecracker (and it is the basis for the word for firecracker in several other European languages).

[During the Middle Ages] A pétard [was] a small bomb used for blowing up gates and walls when breaching fortifications. It is of French origin and dates back to the 16th century.[1]  A typical pétard was a conical or rectangular metal device containing 2–3 kg (5 or 6 pounds) of gunpowder, with a slow match for a fuse.

Pétardiers were deployed during sieges of castles or fortified cities. The pétard, a rather primitive and exceedingly dangerous explosive device, comprised a brass or iron bell-shaped device filled with gunpowder and affixed to a wooden base called an amadrier. This was attached to a wall or gate using hooks and rings, the fuse lit and, if successful, the resulting explosive force, concentrated at the target point, would blow a hole in the obstruction, allowing assault troops to enter.

If a pétard detonated prematurely, the pétardier would be blown upward by the explosion.

Thus — the pétardier was ‘hoisted by his own pétard.

I can definitely think of a few people whose intestinal gas I would love to see prematurely detonated…

The Farce Personified

Such as…

Donald Trump! Never a dull minute with this guy!

Donald Trump has just advocated for banning all Muslim immigrants or refugees.

That is not all! This dude is Bread and Circus on steroids!

This same idiot that advocates for a policy that is so off-the-charts outrageous on so many levels and that is so profoundly wrong in so many ways — this same man is also the front-runner for the Republican nomination for president!

Donald Trump is a walking punch line to a very bad joke — but there he is!

The only reason I can think of as to how he could possibly be there is because Donald Trump is effectively personifying America’s right wing.

Donald Trump is the dying dinosaur that is bitterly complaining about all of these upstart mammals.

It is almost like he was custom typecast for the role of lighting up the Ugly American with neon and throwing the very worst and most reprehensible attributes of our racist and imperialist culture right into everyone’s faces. He is appealing to a certain portion of the Republican Party — but he is totally freaking everyone else, including many Republicans.

(As if the Republican Party needed any more help in their Grand Implosion…)

I fall on the floor and I’m laughing!

I personally think that the dude is performing a valuable public service. I would send him money if I thought he needed it…

You go, Donald Trump!

The Measure of Success

The best way to determine the ‘success’ of a terrorist attack is not by assessing the damage done or by counting the number of people killed — it is determined by the level of the terror that your action instills in the victims.

Since the ‘terror’ (both real and manufactured) that was instilled by the 9-11 attack succeeded at destroying our economy and trashing our democracy — I would say that the 9-11 attackers probably consider their action to have been a huge success.

How to Fix the World 101

It seems to me that our number one priority should be figuring out how to convince humans to start cooperating with each other rather than killing each other.

I am thinking that a good first step in achieving this end would be to halt our current practice of allowing public policy to be determined by sociopathic mass murderers who make big bank off chaos, war, and violent anarchy.

A Democrat in Sheep’s Clothing

Speaking of: Barring unforeseen circumstances, Hillary Clinton is going be our next president.

This is in spite of the fact that Hillary Clinton poses a clear and present danger to the future of humanity. If/when Hillary Clinton becomes President Clinton 2.0 — we are going to be remembering the ‘good old days’ under Barack Obama with nostalgia.

Since this seems pretty much inevitable, this means that calculating the strategic pluses and minuses of supporting Bernie Sanders during this campaign is largely beside the point. I am very glad he is there saying what he is saying — but even the things that Hillary Clinton is saying at this point are almost completely irrelevant much less what an eventual also-ran like Bernie Sanders is saying — so whatever.

I used to cut Bernie Sanders the same slack that I cut Amy Goodman — they were both good guys who were trying to work from inside the Machine — and both had to make some concessions in order to do that.

Bernie Sanders, in fact, has been a hero of mine for many years. There are several reasons for this. For instance: Most senators never speak to the media unless everything is tightly scripted and controlled. For several years, though, Bernie Sanders has appeared on a live nationally broadcast radio program (the Thom Hartmann Program) and spent an hour taking unscripted questions from [screened members of] the general public.

With the possible exception of Rand Paul, I cannot even imagine any other sitting senator who would even consider doing such a thing.

In the past, in fact, I have even referred to Mr. Sanders as the only representative that I have in the federal government.

He’s even with me on his distaste for gun control laws!

However — the problem with Bernie Sanders’ candidacy is summed up by Andrew Levine in Counterpunch better than I could do myself so I will quote him: “It is not just that, objectively, Bernie will be working for Hillary — by keeping “progressives” within the Democratic fold. It is that by not speaking out against her — by not helping the people who will eventually support her realize how dangerous she is — he is doing his part to disable the struggle ahead.”

Bernie has sold out, Kids. He is there to pump up all the ‘progressives’ and to get them all excited about voting — only so he can subsequently endorse Hillary Clinton, an utterly corrupt fascist war criminal and to marginalize left-wing opposition to her.

Bernie is there to pacify us. He is there to make sure that we don’t stray off the corporate Democrat reservation.

Hillary Clinton has never met a war she didn’t like. She will run her presidency like Annie Oakley — only instead of six-shooters, she will be armed with intercontinental ballistic missiles. War profiteers, banksters, hedge fund managers, foreign oil companies, and Saudi Arabians — all have always gotten their money’s worth from both Mrs. Clinton and her husband. I assert, in fact, that other than Ronald Reagan, the Clintons have been the most effective enablers of the Wall Street War Machine in our country’s history. Yes, both of the George Bushes and Barack Obama have also made their very substantial individual contributions — but they were just building upon the foundation that Reagan started and that Bill Clinton made bi-partisan and that the Clinton Foundation under Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton carries on to this day.

Hillary Clinton is more responsible than anyone except possibly Barack Obama for the horror show that is Libya. The disastrous decision to try to undo the Assad government was also almost pure Hillary — and what Hillary did to Libya and that she is trying to do to Syria is exactly what Bush and Cheney did to Iraq and largely for the same reasons.

Hillary is just better at applying pretty lipstick to her pigs than the Bush team was.

All of these combined bi-partisan actions are what set into motion the overall process of chaos, violent anarchy, and regime dissolution that now completely dominates the political and social landscape throughout the Middle East and northern Africa.

Bernie Sanders knows all of this — yet other than some very mild and polite criticism, Bernie Sanders is giving Hillary Clinton a free ride on nearly all of this.

Face it, Kids: Bernie Sanders is working for the Democratic Party Machine. He’s there to help Hillary Clinton get elected and I can’t believe that this was not a fully conscious decision on his part.

(Maybe they promised him one of those survival pods for after the civilizational feces hits the climate change/ water shortage/ world war fan…)

A few other things about Bernie: His positions on organized labour are indistinguishable from the Machine Democrats, including Mrs. Clinton — i.e. they will try to halt any further Republican onslaughts upon union rights and powers (unless they agree upon some ‘compromise’ with the Republicans on this or that thing in order to get some other thing) but neither Clinton nor Sanders has so much as issued an empty promise about doing anything whatsoever to reverse the immense and possibly fatal damage that has already been done to organized labour — the last organized voice of the working class.

In spite of his famous vote against the Iraq occupation, when it comes to the War Machine Bernie Sanders is actually quite schizophrenic — he has supported all kinds of military adventures since the Obamination came to power and his record is overall quite war-hawkish. For instance, he fully supports funding a fiasco known as the F-35 even though the F-35 is a totally worthless aircraft that is famous mostly for killing lots of test pilots and the F-35 represents the epitome of government waste, fraud, and abuse.

Bernie Sanders is also a supporter of Zionist terrorism in Palestine.

I really think that ‘progressives’ need to acknowledge these facts and start giving Mr. Sanders some serious shite about these facts.

Maybe we can turn Bernie renegade…

It’s time to get to work…

The Thunderbolt Calendar

Week of December 10th thru December 16th, 2015

1) FYI Section:

1A) I-735 Getting Close to Goal! Signature Gatherers Needed!

This message came from Gabe:

WAmend volunteers had a great week! They have now gathered just under 210,000 signatures to get Initiative 735 on the 2016 ballot! We have reports that Fix Democracy First for I-735 has also received an additional 7,600 through paid signature gatherers! That means that I-735 is 30,000 signatures away from the minimum needed to file and a little over 100,000 short of our goal of 320,000 by the end of the year!

Many people like you have made a difference in this quest to overturn Citizens United. It looks like we can expect clear skies through the weekend so where do you plan to fill your petition? The campaign has people working in all corners of Washington and you can click here to find where to join them in your area.

Please Sign Up to Volunteer if you haven’t already.

Your help is essential as we are relying on individual volunteers like you to collect 80-90% of the remaining signatures. We can do this!

Let’s dig deep and keep up the energy in the final weeks! What is your goal to make sure I-735 qualifies?! Do you have enough petitions to get your friends and family to sign over Thanksgiving? Know the perfect location to gather on Black Friday?

Sing up here to volunteer and help the ongoing effort. WAmend will send you one or more petitions for your friends, family, colleagues, and other Washington voters to sign. We can also connect you with seasoned signature gatherer who work the best spots for success. Campaign staff have identified places that are protected when it rains and have high foot traffic when it’s dry.

Please don’t hesitate to call WAmend’s office at 206-547-9961 with questions or to volunteer.

Please make a donation.

The campaign is “all-in” to reach our goal of 320,000 signatures by the end of the year. Exactly 1,100 people have now given to the effort! Donate here and show your support. WAmend needs to raise $5,728 this month to stay on track.

Please give today!

With your help, Washington State will declare that corporations are not people, money is not speech, and all political donations should be regulated and made public. With your help, Washington can become the 17th state to demand that Congress overturns the Citizens United decision.

Please join us! Together, we can get there!

1B) Update from West Central Park Project

This message came from Alicia:

We need a few volunteers next Saturday to go and get our big Holiday tree.  We will be meeting at the U-Cut place at the corner of Delphi and 62nd (Black Lake) at 11 am if you can help.  The tough part is hauling that several hundred pound tree up to the flat bed trailer! Last year we had a nineteen footer and it looked about right in the Park.  Too small and the tree can get lost in the vista.  Let me know if you can be there to add some muscles!!

Our Fundraising Committee is a powerhouse! The three go-getters will be meeting next week to plot their first strategy.  If you have some special skills at building small donation bases but don’t want to fill a full time Board position, the fundraising committee might be just right for you.  The Arts Committee will be gearing up in a few weeks as well and needs you artists and musicians’ input to be the greatest it can be!  Would you like to be at the helm of deciding what art and music events are happening at West Central Park but don’t want to be on the Board, the Arts Committee may be perfect for you!

West Central Park needs you more than ever to ensure that it continues to fulfill its mission of fostering the recreational, educational and creative needs of the community in which it sits.  Come be a part of making that happen!

5) Film Screening — Warrior: The Life of Leonard Peltier

Saturday December 12th at 6 pm @ David Williamson Building, 2nd Floor

I took a cell-phone picture of the poster of this event right at publication deadline and it was blurry so I don’t have any further details except that this is sponsored by the Olympia Food CoOp Anti Oppression Group. There is no listing on the CoOp website for this event and I don’t know where the David Williamson building is — but this would be a good event to attend if you can find it, so good luck.

6) PiPE Volunteer Interest Meeting (And Snack Luck!)

Sunday December 13th from 2:30 to 4 pm and Monday December 14th from 6 to 7:30 pm @ Partners in Prevention Education, 408 7th Ave SE

This is the premiere organization in Olympia for working with marginalized youth.

This message came from Renata:

Finding your place in the world can be tough. Finding your place at PiPE, well now, that’s something we can handle!

PiPE is holding two (yes, 2!) new volunteer interest meetings in December and you are invited. Mark your calendar for either:

Sunday Dec 13th, 2:30pm-4pm

– or –

Monday Dec 14th, 6pm-7:30pm

Light snacks will be provided, bring something to share with the group if you like!

PiPE (aka “the purple house”) is a community center for homeless/marginalized youth & young adults downtown, and a community organizing hub for young people and their allies to build the world we want to see–one free from the cycle of violence in all its forms.

Whether one-on-one violence or larger societal forces like poverty, homelessness, oppression*, war… We hold a vision for a world beyond all that, and we engage downtown’s marginalized youth in the work it takes to get there in our own community.

If you share a vision for a healed world, and want to partner with downtown’s marginalized young people on this journey, there is a place for you at PiPE.

We need your help with: staffing drop-in hours, street outreach, skills workshops, grassroots fundraising, organizing events, bookkeeping, computer/web stuff, community networking, acquiring donations/resources, and so much more.

It takes a village to raise a village. Let’s build intentional community, right here.

*we value Respect and Equality, and work to uproot oppression including white supremacy (racism), heterosexism and homophobia (anti-queer attitudes & behavior), cissexism and transphobia (anti-transgender attitudes & behavior), sexism and misogyny, colonialism (dominance of indigenous people and occupation of land through force), classism, ableism (discrimination based on perceived disabilities), ageism, xenophobia…

7) 1st Monthly (A) InfoNight: On Rojava

Tuesday December 15th at 7 pm @ Traditions Café, 300 5th Ave SW

This is about an anarchist collective that has set up shop in the middle of the Syrian madness and seems to be holding their own so far. This is a fascinating story.

This message came from Rita:

The first infonight will be on Rojava the autonomous stateless area of what was previously Syria where revolutionary forces are currently fighting Isis and fighting for a society based on direct democracy, gender equity, and sustainability.

How should anarchists or other radicals in the United States respond to, Support or Join this effort? Lets discuss it!

This will be the first of a monthly series of Informational presentations followed by discussions. There will be anarchist literature, snacks and general fun times to be had.

The presentors for these infonights are not experts but have just researched a current event topic and will share what they know to start a discussion.

8) Bonus Tip of the Day:

Don’t think the Democrats are your friends.
