Second Chances

Or Not…

Job Offering

Greetings, Thunderbolt fans!

Are you feeling like your job is at a dead end? Is it possible you find yourself at a point where you might consider seeking new employment inspirations in possibly unexpected directions?

Well, the Thunderbolt is most happy to announce that you have a golden opportunity because those fun-loving mullahs over in Saudi Arabia are looking for a few good executioners!

As advertised on the website of the Saudi Ministry of Civil Service, they require no specific skills or educational background and the specific job description states that it consist of “carrying out the death sentence according to Islamic Sharia after it is ordered by a legal ruling.”

Yeah — I could do that!

You can too! Yes, Kids, if you’re fresh out of college and see doodly squat as far as career opportunities go, here is your golden opportunity to gain an entry-level position in the ever-expanding field of public executions! You too can become a practitioner in the fine art of cutting off people’s heads!

You will also be required to perform the occasional amputation for lesser offenses — such as cutting off the hands of thieves, etc. (By the way: If they cut off the hands of thieves then I wonder what do they do with adulterers?)

The job posting did not specify relevant experience, training or education level, nor was the salary indicated though the jobs are classified as ‘religious functionaries’ and your pay will be at the lower end of the Saudi civil service pay scale.

They also don’t state whether you will be required to supply your own sword.

Yes, Kids, the rush is on so get in on the ground floor in this exciting cutting edge career! You can pick up an application at a Saudi embassy near you or you can download a PDF application form on the Saudi Ministry’s website carrying Monday’s date.

If at First You Don’t Succeed

I mentioned last week that after having over 1,000 armoured Humvees fall into the hands of ISIS after the Iraqi army ran away and left them behind, that the American response was to send more armoured Humvees to the Iraqi army.

After all, that worked out so well the first time.

Now our president just announced that we are going to send more troops into Iraq.

Yeah, that worked out so well the first time too.

Greece in the Crosshairs

Remember: One man’s debt is another man’s asset and one man’s deficit is another man’s surplus.

Just so we’re clear on what is happening in Greece: For many years German banks have been loaning money to the Greeks at a rate that seemed intentionally designed to be unsustainable. They did this so the Greeks could buy German manufactured goods.

In other words, all of Greece’s lifeblood has been draining into the coffers of the German banks for a long time.

Now that the Greeks have called out the German banks by electing Syriza to run their country the Germans — fat from all that Greek cash in their accounts — had the chutzpah to start calling the Greeks a bunch of lazy deadbeats who don’t pay their debts because the Greeks seem ready to simply refuse to economically destroy their country for the sake of the German banks.

Quote of the Week

It was a gentleman named John Dalberg-Acton who said, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” [17]

That is a very famous quote that I have used several times myself. He also less famously said, “Every thing secret degenerates, even the administration of justice; nothing is safe that does not show how it can bear discussion and publicity.” [23]

Mr. Dalberg-Acton seems to have been a very smart dude.

Fire and Ice

It always astounds me when people — confronted with the facts — simply shrug everything off and assume that someone will come up with something to fix everything.

Maybe they will — but I don’t have such blind faith mostly because our existence is much more fragile and ephemeral than I think most people recognize. Just a few miles below our feet there is molten rock that is as hot as the surface of the sun. Just a few miles above our head is a frozen vacuum where the cold would kill you very quickly if you had not already been killed by the vacuum, which would have sucked all the oxygen out of your body and caused your blood to literally boil long before the cold got to you.

We live in a very thin margin.

It’s time to get to work…

The Thunderbolt Calendar

Week of June 11th thru June 17th, 2015

1) FYI Section:

1A) Update from Environmental Priorities Coalition

The message came from Cathy:

We are getting down to the wire on the state budget negotiations – and Washington’s public lands need your help.

The Senate has proposed a moratorium on land acquisitions in two critical environmental programs: the Puget Sound Acquisition and Restoration Program and the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program. This shortsighted proposal puts Washington’s wildlife and clean water at risk.

Will you contact your Senator and tell him or her that we need public lands for clean water, recreation, and wildlife?

Why should our state continue to acquire public land?

  • Clean water and fish—Public lands along streams, rivers and estuaries provide cool, clean water for fish and people.
  • Recreational opportunities—We enjoy a high quality of life thanks to our public lands. Whether you’re a hunter, angler, hiker or kayaker, speak up now for future recreation.
  • We can’t roll up the pavement—Once habitat is developed, we can’t get it back. We must act now or lose these opportunities forever.

Tell your Senator to speak up for the environment and restore public land acquisitions in the final budget.

The legislature’s budget should reflect our values as Washingtonians—this proposal to eliminate funding for public lands doesn’t.

Thanks for all you do,

Cathy Lehman

Voter Education and Outreach Director

1D) Update from Flush the TPP

This came from FTTPP:

Hey Fast Track Fighters!

At this moment, House leadership is meeting to decide if there will be a vote on Fast Track this week. The Rules Committee will meet this afternoon to decide on the process.

There was a large protest yesterday at Nancy Pelosi’s district office and other actions targeting members who have decided to support Fast Track. Paul Ryan is quoted saying that they want the vote to be soon to protect members from more protests this weekend.

Your actions are working! Staffers tell us that the phone calls are coming in.

The Rigged Trade Rebellion was out yesterday from 10 am to 7 pm. We spoke with members, staffers, advocates and tourists. We handed out nearly 1,000 leaflets. We are posting the list of votes and updating it regularly. You can follow it too: Click here. Please send updates you have any to

This is the time for a sustained mobilization in any way that you are able. We can stop Fast Track!

We are on our way back to the Hill in Washington, DC and we plan to stay there 24/7 throughout the week if there will be a vote. We need you to come to DC if you can.

If you can’t make it to DC, consider holding your own Rigged Trade Rebellion inside or outside your member’s district office. Share the information with us so we can mark it in the Action Map. And send photos too! Contact

Look for your representative on the whip list. If they oppose fast track, then call and thank them and tell them to stay strong. If your member is in favor of fast track, organize an action at their office to pressure them. Some of the most headstrong members have been convinced by constituents to change their position. And if your member is undecided, then call them every day and urge them to vote “no” until they pledge to do so.

It will take a popular uprising to make sure that fast track doesn’t pass.

Remember, stopping fast track is not only important for stopping the TPP but also for stopping two more dangerous agreements that are being negotiated in secret – the TransAtlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the Trade in Services Agreement (recently exposed by WikiLeaks). This is about preventing a future of global corporate rule.

You are a leader because you know this issue. It’s up to you to take action and spread the word.Together we can do it!

Call your representative and make sure they oppose and stay opposed to Fast Track! Use the call in tool at or call 888-804-8311.

Spread the word about the TPP and Fast Track. Many people still don’t know about it. Forward this email to someone you know! Share about it on social media. Follow #StopFastTrack and #RiggedTradeRebellion.

Join the weekly National Fast Track Resistance call tonight to report your results. Our call will feature two advocates from the Coalition for a Strong America, Stephani Scruggs and Michael Bowen, who are on the Hill regularly talking to conservative members. Click here for more information.

We need to win this fight and we can, but we need your help!

2) Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America’s Police Forces

With Radley Balko

Thursday June 11th at Noon @ South Puget Sound Community College Building 26, Room 105

This message came from Mike:

BRICK presents…

Radley Balko

“Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America’s Police Forces”

Noon Thursday, June 11, 2015

Building 26, Room 105 SPSCC

From Ferguson to Baltimore, political protests to the drug war, the last three decades have witnessed a dramatic increase in the use of force by law enforcement. So far this year, police in the United States have killed over 400 Americans, a disproportionate number of them young black men. Despite declining rates of violent crime, police are increasingly being equipped and trained with military weaponry and developing a view of the American public as “the enemy.”

Radley Balko, the Washington Post award-winning investigative journalist and author of Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America’s Police Forces (2013) and Overkill: The Rise of Paramilitary Police Raids in America (2006), will be speaking at SPSCC on these dangerous trends and threats to Americans’ civil rights.

If you require disability accommodations, please contact the Office of Student Life at or call (360) 596-5306.

3) Info Night and Letter Writing for All Long Term Eco and Anarchist Prisoners

Thursday June 11th at 7 pm @ New Moon Café, 113 4th Ave W

This is in solidarity with political prisoners.

This message came from Rita:

Olympia has done a great job recently of supporting friends who have been arrested and targeted by police. With the times we live in, many of us are asking ourselves what might happen if we were to end up behind bars?

Black, brown, poor, and trans people are disproportionately incarcerated and targeted by police violence. Capitalism and white supremacy are the force behind this reality. Struggling for change requires risk, and it’s imperative that we support those who are forced to live in cages, whether for their political actions to fight these forces of oppression, or for the fact that they are targeted as a product of these forces.

June 11th is an annual day of solidarity with long-term anarchist prisoners. In calling for the day, we aim to deepen ongoing support for comrades facing long sentences. They, in particular, risk being forgotten within a prisoner support model based on reacting to spikes in state repression and other emergencies. It is also vital to constantly build new links of solidarity between prisoners and between struggles, rather than fall back on static networks of personal links and contacts.

Any real effort to aid prisoners cannot be based simply on passive support, but must also include a commitment to build on their struggles before and after their imprisonment.

Join us at The New Moon Café at 7pm for information on the cases of several environmental and anarchist prisoners serving long sentences. We’ll give updates and tell some stories about the cases of Marius Mason, Michael Kimble, Marco Camenisch, Nicola Gai and Alfredo Cospito, and celebrate the recent release of Eric McDavid! Visit for resources and events worldwide.

There will be light snacks and letter writing supplies provided. Bring a friend!

4) Brunch with Judy Bardin

Sunday June 12th from 11 am to 1 pm @ 3516 Pifer Rd NE

This message is from Judy Bardin for Olympia City Council:

Sherri Goulet and Sarah Segall are hosting a brunch for you to get to know Judy. Join us to learn more about why we think Judy’s experience and ideas will be valuable assets for our city council. Please RSVP to Sherri, so we know you’re coming: 352-8225 or shardon[at]comcast[dot]net

5) Join Kshama Sawant in Olympia

Friday June 12th at 6 pm @ Washington Labor Council, 906 Columbia St. SW Room 330

Come meet the wonder of Seattle politics.

This message is from Peter:

Please join Kshama Sawant at our fundraiser Friday, June 12th from 6-9 P.M. There will be food and drink. at this fundraiser. Kshama Sawant will give a talk at this social and community event at the Labor Council building.

From the streets of Baltimore to the growing movement for $15, there’s a revolt breaking out against Wall Street and the endemic inequality and racism generated by its system. With growing anger at the establishments of both main political parties, millions are looking for an alternative.

Since her election in 2013, Councilmember Sawant has led the opposition to the corporate agenda in Seattle. An unapologetic fighter for working people, she refuses all corporate donations and only accepts the average worker’s wage. She has tirelessly advocated for workers and the environment, risking arrest standing with workers in Sea-Tac AND stopping coal trains from running through Washington.

Her re-election this year will be a referendum on working-class politics – pitting our grassroots movement against the corporate political establishment. Her re-election will strike a major blow to corporate donors and their political puppets, as well as inspire others to spread the fight for an independent working class party that will represent the interests of the 99%.

Although Kshama Sawant does not represent Olympia directly, her election to the Seattle City Council and her outspoken support for key movements and issues has furthered movements in Olympia such as for a $15 an hour minimum wage. Opposition to her will be funded by major corporations. So Kshama Sawant’s reelection is important far beyond Seattle. That is why we are organizing this fundraiser.

Join us in our urgent fight to defend a true champion of the working class and anti-corporate politics! We hope you can make it.

Even if you cannot make it, please make a check out to “Vote Sawant’ and mail it to the Mosqueda address below, or go to
