Reality Checks

Title 26: A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing?

Hey Kids!

One thing I will say for the Republicans is at least they are unapologetically in your face about the fact that they are fascists whereas the Democrats are a bunch of hypocritical lying little pieces of shite that you must keep a constant eye upon.

Lots of people pay attention to the federal government, the state government, and even our city government. Virtually no one pays attention to county governments even though county governments actually regulate and control a lot of the most basic services upon which we depend. Since they operate almost completely under the radar then there is often massive corruption.

Here in Thurston County, corruption doesn’t seem to be a big problem — but our county government is completely dominated by liberal Democrats meaning they are a bunch of hypocritical lying little pieces of shite that you must keep a constant eye upon.

‘Title 26’ provides a case in point: The Thurston County Council is attempting to sneak through a nasty little piece of work that will greatly increase fines and impose criminal charges upon numerous ‘land use’ practices. While there are many ‘land use’ practices than damned well should be fined and criminalized, and while this title has some of that, overall it appears that there are hidden agendas here. This appears to be underhanded attempt by the county to take more stuff from landowners.

Here is a link to Title 26:

Here is a link to some activists that are working on this issue:

TPP Shafted Kicked and Scorned

Our president is pulling out all stops trying to push through the latest Wall Street outrage (i.e. the Trans Pacific Partnership) and he is coming up short.

Just a couple of weeks ago TPP activists were writing the Senate off as a lost cause and encouraging people to apply the pressure on the House instead: The Senate just voted down fast track authority on the TPP. Almost every Democrat voted against it.

Don’t count too many chickens yet — the Senate is very likely to bring it up again and pass it this time, but the TPP is in true trouble in the House, so things are looking good so far.

Keep up the pressure.

Government Corruption!

The recently ex-governor of Texas and the head of the state senate of New York have been indicted for corruption. The governor of New York is also evidently in some kind of federal hot water.

Don’t get too excited: Since our entire political system is now based upon a ‘Corruption R Us’ theme then a federal indictment usually means nothing more than the fact the indicted person has pissed off the wrong people.

Watching Over the Watchmen

Speaking of Texas, the current governor of Texas has mobilized the Texas National Guard to ‘watch over’ some US Army exercises that are happening in his state.

Everyone on the left is enjoying a good laugh as they look for the tin foil hats.

I would note that the Second Amendment was written to provide for citizen militias and part of the reason for that was so that these militias could act as a counter to federal government overreach. Since our current president claims he can legally execute people without a trial and since executing people without a trial is the very definition of totalitarianism then I think that every state should start following this policy. I would love to see Governor Inslee station Washington National Guard troops outside Fort Lewis in order to keep an eye on them.

No, I’m not wearing a tin foil hat.

More Government Corruption!

Speaking of our president, in yet another validation of my policy of always assuming that everything any politician says is a lie until proven otherwise, it has been revealed that our president lied through his teeth about the operation that assassinated Osama bin Laden. Mr. Obama said that the Pakistanis didn’t know anything about the operation — much to the disbelief of many who were knowledgeable about the situation and about the players. As usual, their skepticism was completely ignored by the Media Machine. As usual, it turns out their skepticism was well founded.

Seymour Hersh has once again rubbed my nose in my criticism of him by once again airing the dirty laundry of Democrats. (You many remember a couple of years ago when I accused him of being a shill for the Democrats since up to that time he only reported on Republican perfidy — whereupon Mr. Hersh immediately thereafter proved me wrong and forced me to eat crow by publishing a major exposé about Democratic perfidy in Obama’s White House.) (It was an apology I was more than happy to make.)

Anyway, according to Mr. Hersh, it turns out that Pakistani intelligence not only knew where bin Laden had been the whole time but they had been keeping him a “prisoner” in his Abbottabad compound since 2006. In addition, the Pakis not only knew all about the American operation to kill bin Laden in advance but they even provided “key assistance” to the Americans.

Hersh also reports that — again contrary to our president’s account — a former Pakistani intelligence officer identified bin Laden’s whereabouts in return for the bulk of a $25 million bounty the Americans were paying. Hersh’s article also questions the U.S. account of bin Laden’s shooting, saying there was never a firefight inside the compound and that bin Laden himself wasn’t even armed. A retired American official says US claims of finding a trove of information from bin Laden’s computers and documents was a “hoax” to give the false impression he was still operationally important. Questions are also raised about whether bin Laden was actually buried at sea, as the U.S. claimed.

In other words, it turns out that nearly every word Mr. Obama told us about what happened on the bin Laden operation was a lie.

Surprise, surprise — not.

Mr. Obama’s people are — surprise, surprise — denying the story. Tellingly, they are not only refusing to refute any of Mr. Hersh’s numerous factual assertions (it is a 10,000 word article) but the Obomber’s spokes-clone specifically said, “There are so many details that we aren’t going to take time to refute them one by one…”

To be fair, there is some legitimate criticism of Mr. Hersh’s reporting. Max Fisher over at Vox has this to say:

“Hersh’s entire narrative turns on a secret deal, in which the US promised Pakistan increased military aid and a “freer hand in Afghanistan.” In fact, the exact opposite of this occurred, with US military aid dropping and US-Pakistan cooperation in Afghanistan plummeting as both sides feuded bitterly for years after the raid.

“Hersh explains this seemingly fatal contradiction by suggesting the deal fell apart due to miscommunication between the Americans and Pakistanis. But it’s strange to argue that the dozens of officials on both sides would be competent enough to secretly plan and execute a massive international ruse, and then to uphold their conspiracy for years after the fact, but would not be competent enough to get on the same page about aid delivery.

“A simpler question: why would Pakistan bother with the ostentatious fake raid at all, when anyone can imagine a dozen simpler, lower-risk, lower-cost ways to do this?”

Yes, governments are expert at figuring out lower-risk lower-cost ways of doing things, especially the American government, so that makes no sense.

While I can think of reasonable explanations for all of these contentions, I must reluctantly admit that these are some valid questions that need to be answered.

Many others, though, are confirming Mr. Hersh’s reporting including someone who reported the facts at the time (and — of course — was completely ignored at the time.)

Let’s do a wait see.

Insecure Security

The FBI has determined that the energy industry is vital to American security and so anyone that opposes the energy industry in any way is a threat to national security. Therefore they are spying on environmental groups, especially those opposed to the Keystone Pipeline and Arctic drilling.

What this means is that if you’re doing any environmental activism then you are now on the FBI’s subversive list.

I would note that if you’re not already on the FBI’s subversive list then you aren’t doing your civic duty.

Reality Check

Normally I switch off whenever I come across any video or news footage of our president saying things since what he says means less than doodly squat. However, I was just watching Democracy Now when Mr. Obama suddenly appeared and before I could get to the mute button he made a sales pitch for the TPP.

He said this, in fact, in response to Elizabeth Warren’s utterly accurate criticism of the TPP as nothing more than the latest iteration of the heinous Wall Street scam:

“Think about the logic of that. The notion that I had this massive fight with Wall Street to make sure that we don’t repeat what happened in 2007 and 2008 and then I sign a provision that would unravel it? I’d have to be pretty stupid. And it doesn’t make any sense… Elizabeth is, you know, a politician like everybody else. She’s got a voice that she wants to get out there. And I understand that. And on most issues, she and I deeply agree. On this one, though, her arguments don’t stand the test of fact and scrutiny.”

Upon hearing him say this I sputtered and foamed at the mouth for several minutes before I could come down from the emotional impact of his words and appreciate the pure genius not only of what he said but of how he said it. In that inimitable trademark Obama style of calm reasonable highly intelligent professorial adult-in-the-room delectation our president uttered 100 words that I found myself half-believing even though I knew full well that nearly every single word in that entire sentence was not only the utter total absolute complete opposite of the actual facts but even the entire premise that the statement was based upon was the utter complete total absolute opposite of the actual facts!

He had a “massive fight” with Wall Street? Really? How did I miss that?

As he did when he completely played Medea Benjamin during that speech a few years ago, our president made an immanently responsible and reasonable argument that was the complete polar opposite of actual reality. The fact is that Wall Street put Mr. Obama in the White House and the fact is that every single economic policy Mr. Obama has promoted during his presidency — including his vaunted health care bill — has been to the very great benefit of Wall Street. Not only has Mr. Obama done absolutely nothing to make sure that “2007 and 2008 doesn’t happen again” but he has taken every step to assure that 2007 and 2008 will inevitably happen again. The ‘too big to fail’ banks are now bigger than ever and already they are pumping up the tattered shreds of what is left of our exhausted economy because Wall Street makes money both coming and going when the boom-and-bust cycles come around, so as long as they are in charge then you can rest assured that they will keep the booms and busts coming…

…and their houseboy in the White House is a full and willing participant. He is not promoting the TPP in order to unravel anything — he is promoting the TPP because the TPP will greatly enhance Wall Street’s already deadly stranglehold over our world.

As Mr. Obama also noted in his statement, he is not stupid — he is a frigging genius, in fact — which is exactly what makes him so dangerous. His actions make perfect sense if your top priority is the well being of Wall Street. Elizabeth Warren is actually a politician, but she is unlike any other politician out there — and while she does indeed have a “voice that she wants to get out there” — meaning that Mr. Obama was technically telling the truth on that point — the fact is that politicians will enthusiastically tell the truth on the rare occasions when it is politically advantageous to do so; thus Obama uttering a truth-hood in this instance is merely the exception that proves the rule.

While he probably does understand Ms. Warren’s wish to have a voice I am also quite sure that he frigging hates it, especially since everything Ms. Warren is saying about the TPP is actually the truth while everything Mr. Obama is saying about it is a lie. Mr. Obama says that he agrees with Ms. Warren on most issues even though he does the exact opposite when it comes to his actual policy decisions on any matter economic — and Ms. Warren’s arguments on the TPP are actually quite accurate and factually unassailable.

I couldn’t help but admire the diabolical genius as I imagined all of the legions of Obama-bots (soon to be Hillary-bots) as they enthusiastically lapped that crap up saying, “Yeah! Take that, Elizabeth Warren!”

Reality Check II

Then, to add insult to injury, just a few minutes later I had to listen to Bill Clinton say this concerning the ‘sentencing reform guidelines’ that he signed into law during his presidency and which led to an explosion in the federal prison population:

“The problem is the way it was written and implemented, we cast too wide a net, we have too many people in prison. And we wound up putting so many people in prison that there wasn’t enough money left to educate them, train them for new jobs, and increase the chances when they came out so they could live productive lives.”

Like Barack Obama, Bill Clinton is a very intelligent and knowledgeable man. Evidently I am supposed to listen to Mr. Clinton’s great mea culpa (that, it so happens, is being delivered at a time very advantageous to the campaign of his wife) and evidently I am now supposed to just be thankful that he has finally seen the errors of his ways? I am supposed to believe that Mr. Clinton did not know full well when he signed that evil legislation what the results of his War on Blacks was going to be? I could have told him what those results would be. Almost anyone that looked into the facts and that had at least a third grade education and at least a room temperature IQ could have told him what those results would be.

So, Mr. Clinton, speaking as someone who rotted in a federal prison for six years because of your policies, I’ve got only this to say in response to your belated regret:

F#%K you, Bill Clinton.

It’s time to get to work…

This is a good idea.

This message is from Michelle:

A revenue-neutral carbon tax campaign

CarbonWA’s Initiative 732, if passed, will reduce the disproportionate impacts on the poor, caused by climate change and other pollution, while simultaneously tackling the inequities in Washington State’s tax system. This proposed tax on GHG emitting fossil fuels will finance the Working Families Rebate program, reduce the state sales tax by 1% and reduce climate changing carbon emissions.

Contact to find out how you can help and be sure to sign a petition to get initiative 732 on the 2016 ballot.

2) Legislative Hearing: HB 1314

Thursday May 14th at 1 pm @ Washington State Capitol, John O’Brien Building

This is a hearing on the Carbon Pollution Accountability Act.

This message is from Cathy:

Environmental Priorities Coalition

A network of over 20 leading environmental groups in Washington that influence policy at the state level.

Last month, we were disappointed but hopeful when the Washington State House released their budget proposal.

The Carbon Pollution Accountability Act (HB 1314) wasn’t part of their original budget, BUT they said they were still hopeful that could change. This Thursday, the House Appropriations committee is holding a hearing on a new version of this bill, and we are going to be there to advocate for including revenue from carbon emissions in the next budget.

We know it’s late notice, but can you join us? We need to tell the House Appropriations Committee that it’s important to make polluters pay for climate emissions while also creating jobs, cutting carbon pollution, growing the clean energy economy, and re-investing in our communities!

Join us in Olympia this Thursday, May 14th at 1pm for the the House Appropriations Committee Hearing in the John O’Brien building. RSVP to me, Cathy, by replying to this email.

Can’t join in person?

Email your Representatives to let them know you support including the Carbon Pollution Accountability Act. Ask them to pass it and ensure that it is part of the final 2015-2017 budget.

We’ll keep you posted as we learn more about the new version of the bill.

Thank you again for all you do,

Cathy Lehman

Voter Education and Outreach Director

10) Chilean Anarchist Propaganda: Past Present and Future Projections

Saturday May 16th at 7 pm @ New Moon Café, 113 4th Ave W

This is an update on the anarchist movement in Chile.

This message is from Rita:

Presentation and talk by Chilean anarchist comrade regarding historical and current trends and context for anarchist propaganda in Chile.

Saturday May 16th at The New Moon Cooperative Cafe, 113 4th Ave Olympia

To introduce the topic, the first target of this talk is to make a very brief contextualization of Chile: its history, historical milestones, and current legislation of importance. Furthermore, I will offer a macroeconomic context and some comparisons with the U.S. for the audience to better understand the nuances of the presentation.

Historical: The idea is to mention briefly the first propaganda attempts in Chile (since 1893), explaining the possible causes and repercussions it had in the region: The first workers organization, social invocations, and mutual-aid that were later taken over by the state. In short, the more relevant publications and controversies that existed until the 90s will be mentioned.

Recent History: From the 90s onwards, under the new “democratic context,” anarchist publications and different forms of propaganda began to gradually return, perhaps more diverse and alongside other radical left ideological influences. This talk will touch on other influences such as the history of the FAU (Uruguayan Anarchist federation) and later (early 2000) European anarchist insurrection, among others.

Present: Shifts in consumption behavior in relation to information and news has altered faster than anarchist groups could keep up with, especially at times when reading indexes in Chile remain as low as ever (the taxation on books and other things). The emergence of facebook, on the other hand, (from 2004 onwards) seems to have been fatal to the development and continuation of anarchist propaganda in Chile in the last several years (in a self-managed and autonomous way).

The decline in the dissemination and public presence of anarchist ideas has been partly due to the absence of shared web platforms or a more “neutral” site (ex Indymedia), as well as an increase in street policing. Obviously, publications and websites remain, but limited in its reach to anarchist circles.

Other Mediums: Since 2007 a series of anarchist audiovisual publications were initiated, which contributed in creating a closeness with a segment of the Chilean “youth”; renovating anarchist propaganda in its aesthetics (since the anarchist propaganda responded principally to the aesthetics of the Chilean left and punk/anarchist subculture who undoubtedly influenced the reappearance of anarchism in Chile).

To conclude, I will mention the appearance of anarchists in the official media. This includes newspaper covers, mention in national news, as well as academic, business, government conferences and how it positively influenced the spreading of anarchist ideas (contrary to its intention).

Felipe Valenzuela.

Anarquista Videografo.

Santiago, Chile.

WHY: To stop Arctic drilling and take a stand against companies like Shell who profit from climate chaos.

This is the event page for the third day of our three-day Festival of Resistance to Shell’s Arctic drilling plans! This festival will take place on May 16, 17, and 18.

Here’s the event page for the first day of resistance on May 16:

Take the pledge of resistance at and learn more about who we are and how you can get involved! Don’t live in Seattle, but want to come? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered there too! You’ll find all the information you need on our website.

On January 8, we learned that Shell will be hosting their Arctic drilling rigs in Terminal 5 of the Port of Seattle. That same day the journal Nature published an article saying that Arctic oil MUST be left in the ground in order to avoid catastrophic climate change. Drilling for Arctic oil is an open attack on people in the global south, who are already losing communities to rising seas and extreme weather. It could also spell disaster for one of the most unique wilderness areas on the planet and all of its inhabitants.

Shell’s rigs will arrive as we mark the five-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon disaster. We need a massive peaceful resistance to confront Shell, and the systems of colonialism, racism, and capitalism that drive climate chaos.

From May 16 to May 18, join us in Seattle for three days of creative, people-powered resistance to Shell and the climate crisis. We will converge on the Seattle waterfront by land and sea, transforming Terminal 5 and Harbor Island into a festival of resistance that will nonviolently block Shell’s preparations for Arctic drilling.

While we confront Shell, we stand in solidarity with indigenous peoples and people of color who endure the brunt of extraction and climate chaos.

We will unite in creative action, including a mass water-based blockade, and an event focused on working to honor our connections with this beautiful and complex planet. These events will build to a day of Mass Direct Action on Monday, May 18, when we will use nonviolent action to SHUT DOWN SHELL and all operations related to their Arctic expedition.

Shell’s drilling rigs are a prime example of the root causes and injustice of the climate crisis. They will generate untold wealth for the few, while wrecking the climate for everyone, trampling on indigenous rights, and causing millions of deaths in the global south.

Fifteen years after the WTO protests, we will remind the world that corporations like Shell that abuse human, environmental, and labor rights are not welcome in Seattle. We are fighting for a world where we can all provide for our families without risking our health, planet, or future generations.

The fossil fuel economy of exploitation is over. A new world is within our reach. Rise up. Resist. Join us in Seattle!

12) Cop Watch: Report on the Olympia Police Department

Tuesday May 19th at 7 pm @ Traditions Café, 300 5th Ave SW

This is yet another incarnation of Olympia Cop Watch. The need keeps arising.

This message is from Terrence:

An oldie but a goodie in the community revived and brought to life in yet one more incantation. Reports on policies, and the attitudes and behaviors of officers of the OPD from A to Z will be accumulated and regurgitated – think of it as a grading curve – back to city council, OPD, and the community at years’ end.

The police keep us safe

We keep the police honest

We are a group of concerned citizens who have heard and seen news reports from across the United States. Since Olympia is part of the United States, and our police are part of the greater brotherhood of police departments and officers, we have every reason to believe that the police in our community operate with the same attitudes. Especially so because there is no official civilian oversight of the Olympia Police Department.

We, as Cop Watch citizens, will do what we can to give feedback to the OPD, city council, news media outlets, and the community regarding the conduct, behavior and actions of interactions that are presented to us, both good & bad.

We will collect stories in oral, written or video formats and use these to compile an on-going document of interactions between the officers of the OPD and the public whom they are charged to serve & protect.

Cop Watch citizens will be available at Traditions Café’ on Thursday afternoons from 4 – 5 pm.

Free cookies.

We are working alongside the CRO folks. Hopefully this will add some actual evidence into the mix.

About Sister Outsider Poetry:

“Dominique Christina and Denice Frohman are Sister Outsider. This award-winning duo represents some of the top performance poets in the world. Their collaboration marks the first time two Women of the World Poetry Slam Champions have paired up. Over the last two years, their national tour has been widely successful, bringing them to over 90 universities, colleges, conferences, schools and community spaces across the country.

Through spoken word they connect deeply personal stories to a diverse range of social and political issues, particularly around race, gender and sexuality, and how those tie into being an “other.” More specifically, poems focus on Latin@, black, and multicultural identities, homophobia, surviving sexual assault, reclaiming women’s bodies, immigration, language, educational inequalities, coming of age, and more. They write their “otherness” into the center and encourage others, particularly those in marginalized communities, to do the same. Inspired by the life and work of Audre Lorde, these two artists and educators, come together under one vision.”

About Kina Wolfenstein:

“Kina Wolfenstein is a poet from Portland, Oregon. She’s been writing since she learned how to spell, and Slamming since 2012. She is queer, glittery, and wishes she was a dolphin. When she’s not trying to figure out how to turn her existential angst into cool art, you can usually find her playing with her two rats, Goblin and Juni. She’s passionate about creepy deep sea creatures, feminism, fairies and thai food.”

Hosted by T*REX (Trans* Resources and Education Xtravaganza) as a part of Queer Week.
