Racist Irony

Hey Kids!

The Edmund Pettus Bridge near Selma, Alabama has become an icon of the Civil Rights Movement. The Edmund Pettus Bridge was where the Alabama State Police brutally ended the first civil rights march on Selma with beatings, dogs, and tear gas.

Pictures of the police brutally beating and unleashing dogs upon unarmed and unresisting protesters at the Edmund Pettus Bridge marked a major turning point in public opinion concerning the Civil Rights Movement.

For those of you who think that fate doesn’t have an ironic sense of humour, I would point out that the Edmund Pettus Bridge was named after a man who was an open and virulent racist, a Confederate general, a senator for the State of Alabama — and a Grand Dragon in the Ku Klux Klan.

The fact that his bridge has become so intimately associated with the Civil Rights Movement must have the good Mr. Pettus turning in his grave.

Dear Thunderbolt!

In my never-ending quest to test the bounds of political hijinks and good taste, this week the Thunderbolt brings you the world premiere of a brand new feature:

Dear Thunderbolt!

Yes, it’s the Thunderbolt advice column! Send me you questions and I will provide you with cogent — or possibly insane — advice for how to deal with the world!

Here is the first letter:

Dear Thunderbolt:

My wife hollers at me, my kids are all freaks, my plumbing needs fixing and my fountain pen leaks. Every side I get up on is the wrong side of bed — if it weren’t so expensive I’d wish I were dead.
Signed: Unhappy

And here is the reply:

Dear Unhappy:

It is believed by some that it was for just such petty First World concerns that God created the AK-47.

Here’s another:

Dear Thunderbolt:

A bunch of psychopaths kidnapped my great-grandfather and enslaved him. Then all of his descendants were systemically oppressed exploited imprisoned brutalized robbed pillaged raped and now the police are mass-murdering my people without any accountability. What’s a person to do?
Signed: Oppressed.

And here is the reply:

Dear Oppressed:

It is believed by others that it was for just such serious Third World concerns that God created the AK-47.

Aggression Regression

Towards the end of World War II the leaders of the Western powers all gathered at Yalta — located in the Crimea back when the Crimea was still part of the Soviet Union — in order to determine the ‘new world order’ that would be emplaced after hostilities ended. Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill all attended.

Many criticized Roosevelt at Yalta for giving away too much to Stalin when he didn’t really have to — but there is an interesting side-note concerning that most people don’t know about: Stalin intentionally had Roosevelt flown to Yalta by a circuitous route that took him over the portions of the Soviet Union that had suffered the worst devastation wrought by the Nazis — and it totally blew Roosevelt’s mind, just as Stalin intended. Roosevelt had never actually seen firsthand the devastation wrought by modern total war, and he found the Kafkaesque scenes below him to be almost unbelievable.

Considering this, and considering the fact that it was the Soviet Union that actually defeated the Nazis, and while the D-Day invasion helped ease some of the load on the Soviets, the fact remains that they would have steamrolled the Nazis either way and the fact is that only reason that D-Day was even possible was because 80% of Hitler’s troops were on the Eastern Front fighting the Soviet Union. It is estimated that the Nazis killed over 30 million Russians in their invasion.

Russia earned every concession that Stalin won at Yalta.

Ever since their disaster in Afghanistan, Russia is no longer engaged as an expansionist power. For the last 35 years the Russians have simply been trying to hang onto what they gained at Yalta, which was pretty much what they had always had anyway. The history of the Ukraine for the last few hundred years has basically been the history of Russia. The modern Russian Machine actually first formed in Kiev before moving their operations to Moscow in I don’t remember exactly when but it was many hundreds of years ago — I am thinking sometime in the mid-First Millennium. While their relationship has definitely had its ups and downs, overall they have been butt-buddies for many centuries now.

What this means is that Russia is NOT the aggressor in this situation. Putin’s actions are a direct result of outrageous Western interference within Russia’s traditional sphere of influence. Western actions in the Ukraine have been the equivalent of a direct assault upon Russia’s strategic concerns and an assault upon both the letter and the spirit of both the Yalta agreement and the 1980’s agreement between Gorbachev and Bush.

As far as the real-world effects of all this, though, it is not Putin or the Western leaders who are doing the bleeding and dying and suffering in the Ukraine; it is Ukrainian civilians who are dying in droves. In addition, even though the Ukrainian economy no longer exists, John Kerry’s top budget priority for the Ukraine is to counter the Russian’s ‘propaganda’ campaign. Both sides are slaughtering civilians indiscriminately and each side accuses the other of conducting atrocities that, for the most part, they are indeed conducting.

During this last week I have heard three of my reliable sources warn that the Ukrainian situation could very easily turn into a full-scale war with Russia — and a full-scale war with Russia would not be like throwing over a tin-pot Third World dictator. Most Americans don’t realize that Russia now actually has more nuclear weapons than the United States does and Putin has laid out several very clear ‘red lines’ that — unlike our own president, who simply moves his red lines whenever someone steps over them — with Putin you can most likely take him at his word.

In other words, the Americans — after financially backing an illegal coup that overthrew the democratically elected Ukrainian government and after installing a bunch of Western-centric fascist lunatics and idiots in their place — perhaps the United States should think twice before pushing much harder on Russia’s envelope…

Quantum Gods

Several times in our history prominent people have declared that humanity had already discovered everything that was worth discovering and that further scientific inquiry into the workings of the Universe was thus pointless.

This is a classic example of prominent people proving what profound idiots humans can be. It seems to me — both in my personal life and in the life of humanity as a whole — that the central lesson the Universe is trying to teach us is not only how incredibly much there is that we don’t have the slightest clue about, but It is teaching us that we are probably not even intellectually capable of having the slightest clue about it.

I think that true enlightenment may come with the understanding that actually humans don’t know much of anything about much of anything.

For instance: Did you know that the entire universe that we can see — including all the trillions of stars and all of the hundreds of billions of galaxies that blanket our night sky — did you know that all of that combined compromises only around 4% of the detectable mass of our universe?

The other 96% consists of ‘dark matter’ and ‘dark energy’. They call it dark matter and dark energy because they can’t see it. Evidently dark matter and energy does not interact with light in any way. Evidently dark matter and dark energy has the most effective cloaking device in the known universe. It works so well that scientists have absolutely no idea what dark matter or dark energy even is. It neither sheds nor emits any energy of any kind anywhere in the entire electromagnetic spectrum — meaning that we can’t see it or hear it or touch it or taste it. Since dark matter and dark energy is not detectable with any of our senses or with any of our instruments scientists have no idea what dark matter or dark energy is made of or even what its most basic properties are other than the fact that dark matter has gravity.

The fact that dark matter has gravity, in fact, is the only reason that we even know of its existence.

And while dark matter does not interact with the electromagnetic scale, when it comes to gravity, dark matter utterly dominates the Universe. Without dark matter there would be no structure to the Universe, i.e. no galaxies, solar systems or planets.

No us, either.

This means that we are completely surrounded by a vast and invisible universe that is 20 times the mass of the universe that we can see but a universe that the average Joe is completely unaware of.

And that is not all: Dark energy is a completely different thing than dark matter — and in fact in some ways it is the opposite as dark matter encourages structure while dark energy destroys structure.

Sort of like an evil twin and a good twin — only they’re both dark.

As our telescopes have gotten better, though, we are learning a lot more about the part of the universe that we can see. There’s still a lot there — even if it is only 4%.

Building upon the foundation that Albert Einstein laid, scientists seem to have largely figured out most of the ground rules for the visible portion of the Universe.

However — along with the discovery of dark matter and dark energy, other mind-blowing happenings are simultaneously happening on the ultra-micro level also! Even as these miraculous telescopes have so vastly increased our ability to see our surrounding macro-universe, microscopes have also been getting much better at peering into the ultra-micro-universe — i.e. the building blocks that make up everything else.

They have discovered they don’t have the slightest clue of what is going on there, either. It turns out that the smaller you get, the more bizarre and incomprehensible the rules of the universe appear to be.

Even on the cellular level things become very strange.

People are often encouraged to look inside themselves. If anyone ever actually did this, though, they might become highly alarmed…

If you blew any given cell in your body up to a scale wherein an atom would be the size of a pea, the cell itself would be a round sphere roughly ½ mile across. A complex framework of girders called a cytoskeleton would be supporting the structure of your cell. Within the cell, millions and millions of objects ranging in size from a basketball to a car would be whizzing everywhere like bullets. No matter where you tried to stand you would be struck thousands of times per second from every direction. Enzymes are dashing everywhere performing thousands of tasks per second. Proteins are especially lively, spinning, pulsating, and flying into each other up to a billion times per second. Proteins usually only live between ½ hour to a few weeks — but while they do exist they exist in a reality that is frenzied literally beyond human imagination.

The mind-blowing part of all of this is that that frenzy is purposeful and it accomplishes the tasks that are required to keep you alive, functioning, and thinking. It all works — though thinking about the processes involved in thinking may give you a headache and/or scare the crap out of you.

Anyway, that is reality on the cellular level.

When we shrink even further — to the subatomic level — that is where things become truly bizarre…

When I was a child I was taught the atom was the smallest unit of matter that existed. Scientists have now learned that not only are there smaller particles that make up atoms, but there are even smaller particles making up those particles — and it is beginning to appear as if infinity may apply to smallness as well as largeness — and it has turned out that as you get smaller then the rules that rule our old familiar everyday reality go out the window. Evidently E=MC2 doesn’t apply here. It appears that in the sub-atomic quantum world, an object can be two places at the same time, it can instantly communicate with other objects without regard for distance, and that subatomic quantum particles can even predict the future. It appears that the mere act of observing some quantum-level thing changes that thing — indicating that our brain waves may physically interact with certain parts of that quantum universe.

Niels Bohr said that anyone who was not outraged when first hearing about quantum theory did not understand what had been said. Heisenberg, when asked how one could envision an atom, replied, “Don’t even try.”

If ‘dark matter’ does not interact with light then maybe dark matter is not subject to the 186,000 miles per second speed limit to which matter in the visible universe is subjected. This could also have implications for time travel. The evident interaction between human thought and matter could explain how karma works.

Rather than some universal presence in the sky, perhaps God has literally been hiding inside us! Perhaps She is sitting right now inside an atom inside your body. Perhaps She’s been kicking it in Quantum World for this whole time just waiting for us to look for Her there…

Kind of the ultimate ‘string-puller’, if you know what I mean…

It’s time to get to work…

The Thunderbolt Calendar

Week of March 12th thru March 18th, 2015

1) FYI Section:

1A) US Social Forum Approaching Rides Available

If you would like to attend the US Social Forum this year in San José, plug in here.

This message is from Bruce:

The US Social Forum is this June for the first time since 2010 and it is being held in a polycentric model with three locations at the same time. The closest one thousands will attend is in San Jose. It is from June 24-28th! You don’t want to miss this amazing event!
Media Island is organizing two buses starting off in Seattle to go to the USSF in San Jose leaving June 23rd and returning the 29th. That means that we would like 40-60 people to join the buses! The journey can be as exciting as the destination on these old interesting buses.

It might be that Seattle on it’s own will fill both buses, however, we will be passing through Olympia and Portland and to make sure we fill up, we will take people who sign up from Seattle to Portland on a first come first serve basis. With 50 people on the buses, our ideal number for comfort and cost, the costs will be approximately $80/ person not including housing costs or USSF entry costs in San Jose. We encourage others to fundraise to help subsidize themselves or someone who can’t afford the cost. As of right now, the bus organizers can’t provide subsidy and can’t be expected to be primary organizers for ways to create subsidization other than our commitment to keeping the costs minimal.

If you would like to go on the bus fill out the form on the website, whether you can afford to or not, and let us know. Subsidized funding may become available closer to the date. Also check out

Thanks and solidarity!

1B) People’s Climate Action Fleet Coming in June

The Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation plans a big action on the Summer Solstice next June and they need help organizing it.

This message is from Bev:

The Olympia FORs Climate Crisis Action Group wants you to join us and other like minded climate activists on Summer Solstice June 21st for a day on the waters of the Salish Sea off the coast of the US Open’s final day at the vast Chambers Bay Golf Course just north of Steilacoom and south of Point Defiance in Puget Sound.

Be part of the PEOPLE’S CLIMATE ACTION FLEET: Bring your kayaks, canoes, sailboats and whatever floats in solidarity with groups from all over Free Cascadia in a water-based direct action against Shell (a PGA sponsor) and other polluters. Golfers and viewers all over the world will see us and our signs gathered out on the water as they take in their expansive billion-dollar-view from the event.

The USGA is expecting more than 200,000 spectators, volunteers, media, vendors and staff to attend the already sold-out 7-day event. There will be network and international televised coverage of this event pointing their cameras out onto the water where we will be 1000 yards offshore per Coast Guard regulations. We plan to have a barge with porta-potties for kayakers and small boaters to go aboard as needed. We have reserved a picnic area with barbecues and bathrooms at a local park just north of the City of Steilacoom for land-based support.

We envision this event as similar in scope and message to the action on and above the Columbia River in 2013: ‘Coal, Oil, Gas; None Shall Pass.’

A demonstration this size will require cooperation and planning from many people and organizations! Our small Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation’s Climate Action group will need numerous co-sponsors to help at all stages of the planning. Please e-mail us at to let us know if your group will join the People’s Climate Action Fleet and help to co-sponsor the demonstration. We would like to have a list of co-sponsors by April 1st so we can use the list on our websites, flyers and posters. We cannot do this without wide participation.

1C) Mondays in March: Call the Juvie Contractors and Tell Them to F**K Off!

This message is from Rita and it contains some fully justified profanity:

Last month the city of Seattle approved the selection of a design-build team
that will make millions of dollars off of designing and building a new youth
jail at 12th and Alder. Howard S. Wright, HOK and Integrus all proudly
exclaim long résumés filled with examples of jails, prisons and police
stations that they have built and profited from.

While the prison-industrial complex seems like an overwhelmingly large and
abstract structure to try to resist, there are real people who sit in
ergonomic chairs clicking away at computer screens on which they are building
models of prison cells. There are men in suits who pick up telephones and
make deals for the delivery of the materials that will build the walls,
offices, and security systems of the new jail.

Each Monday during the month of March please join us in calling, emailing,
and/or faxing the real people who are responsible for creating the
infrastructure that destroys the lives of millions. Let them know what you
think, urge them to consider the implications of their choices, or just tell
them that you think they are fucking disgusting and ask them how they sleep
at night.

Why a call in day?

Because these companies stand to make enormous amounts of money off of this
project, it is unlikely that they can be convinced to back out of their deal
with the city. Since we can’t convince them not to build the jail, it might
make sense to make it as inconvenient and annoying as possible to complete
the project. This will not only make it more likely that those working on the
project will get burnt out, it also shows companies that would invest in
similar future projects that it may not be worth their money. Tying up the
phone lines and inboxes of a few bureaucrats for a day may seem like a small
inconvenience, but we hope that it can be one obnoxious fly among many
buzzing in their ears and biting at theirs heels.

Please call the offices listed on the following dates between the hours of 9
am and 5 pm PST. Pass this information along to anyone who might be
interested, you don’t have to live in Seattle to call these people and let
them know what you think!

Here are a few scripts that you can use

When you call, they may ask you your name. You can give your real name, but
we recommend making one up! It’s more fun!

Script 1

Hi, My name is _________ I am calling to urge you to cancel your contract
with the city of Seattle to build a new youth jail at 12th and Alder.
Building a new jail will not address the problems faced by youth in this city
and will seriously contribute to maintaining deep racial inequality. Building
a new jail will only hurt our communities. Please stand against racism and
inequality by canceling your contract to build the new jail.

Script 2

Hi, my name is ____________ I am calling to tell you that I think that you
are disgusting sack of human excrement. How do you sleep knowing about the
thousands of lives you’ve built cages for? Inside the walls that you design
people who are worth much more than you will be beaten regularly. You are no
better than the colonizers who built the plantations. You are their closest
relative. Fuck off, you scum.

1D) Registration Open for Western Washington Fellowship of Reconciliation Annual Spring Assembly

This isn’t happening until next month but they like pre-registration, so register now if you wish to attend.

This message is from Glen:

Saturday April 11, 2015, in West Seattle:

“Nonviolent Solutions to Structural Oppression”

Western Washington FOR’s 17th Annual Spring Assembly

Saturday April 11, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

(Arrive as early as 9:00 for social time and refreshments.  We’ll start the event promptly at 10:00 a.m.)

Every year WWFOR brings grassroots folks together for a Spring Assembly to share ideas and strengthen the movements for social justice, nonviolence and peace.  Please join with other people from mid-morning to mid-afternoon on Saturday April 11 at Fauntleroy UCC Church, 9140 California Avenue SW in West Seattle.

Our 2015 Spring Assembly on Saturday April 11 will be more participatory than ever.

This year’s theme and activities:  The problems we keep seeing at global, national, and local levels are huge, persistent, and deeply rooted.  The Vietnam war was not an aberration from an otherwise peaceful foreign policy, nor are police abuses caused by “a few bad apples,” nor is homelessness the fault of people making bad choices, nor are people of color to blame for the effects of racial disparities. Big problems cause continuous violence, continuous injustice, and continuous trauma stress.  Society needs profound healing from addictions to greed, violence, and racism.

These big problems that cause ongoing oppression are structural – built into our society’s systems. Solving them requires more than masking symptoms, applying band-aids, or enacting liberal “reforms” that merely tinker around their edges.

Real solutions require radical (getting to the root) approaches based on nonviolent values that profoundly respect the unity of the entire human family and all of our ecosystems.  Real solutionsrequire active listening and bold, creative alternatives to structural oppression.

Today is VERY PARTICIPATORY!  Instead of one keynote speech to a passive audience, everyonewill be able to collaborate in shaping our keynote message to flesh out 2015’s theme, “Nonviolent Solutions to Structural Oppression.”   Morning workshops will explore problems.  Afternoon small groups will allow everyone to generate creative nonviolent solutions.

à    Pre-register by April 3 if possible because this helps us plan.  But even if you don’t pre-register, come anyway!

à    Suggested donation:  It costs WWFOR approximately $15 per person to put on this Assembly.  We welcome participants regardless of ability to pay, and hope those who can afford more will balance those who can afford less.
Your registration donation includes a delicious catered lunch.

This is sponsored by Western Washington Fellowship of Reconciliation  (206) 789-5565

For information and pre-registration contact Glen Anderson (360) 491-9093

1E) Update from West Central Park

This message is from Alicia:

I know you are all wondering what in the world is going on with the De Garmo’s pharmacy building and the new Parkside Cafe. The process got exceedingly drawn out, but we are quite pleased to be submitting a total plan for at least four of the properties on the block. Parking was one big concern, and we have found a way to hopefully satisfy all. The Degarmo building will come down and a new two story, 3,500 square foot building will be built on the north end of the lot close to the sidewalk. There will be one handicap parking spot behind the building and two-way access lane into the Park. All other required parking for the Parkside Cafe will be situated on the 110 Division lot and the 106 Division lot combined.

Also at 110 Division, we are applying for a retail use and permission to build two new mixed use retail/residential buildings on the western side of the lot. The total parking that can be provided for off street at that site will be 29 spaces. By next week I will share a master site plan so that you all can see how we propose to accomplish this.

At 106 Division, the Olympia Honey Bakery will be moving in by August and opening by September! Sketches have been finalized and engineered for the interior remodel and the use change from residential to retail is underway.

If you ever have any questions about future plans for the block or the Park, don’t hesitate to ask!

In other Park news, the movie schedule is out for the summer and is as follows.  All summer movies will be shown for free on Monday nights in July and August!

The July Titles:

July 6: Raiders of the Lost Ark

July 13: Mouse Hunt

July 20: Goonies

July 27: Frozen (A Sing a Long)

Hope to see you all this summer in the Park for Monday Movie Madness, Stay tuned for our August titles coming up in the next newsletter!

See you around the block!

3) Olympia People’s Mic Feat: David Rovics & Spotlight Feature Kaleigh O’Keefe

Thursday March 12th at 7 pm @ Café Love, 205 4th Ave E

This is radical performance!

This message is from Koyote:

Once a month, we’re having a non-poetry feature at the People’s Mic, and this is that week! We’re excited to have David Rovics feature. It’s $3-$7 as always, and still a poetry open-mic (if you’re curious why, feel free to ask). Invite your friends! Come check it out!

We will have a spotlight feature from Kaleigh O’Keefe of Old Growth Poetry Collective‘s east coast doppleganger Flatline Poetry.

David Rovics grew up in a family of classical musicians in Wilton, Connecticut, and became a fan of populist regimes early on. By the early 90’s he was a full-time busker in the Boston subways and by the mid-90’s he was traveling the world as a professional flat-picking rabble-rouser. These days David lives in Portland, Oregon and tours regularly on four continents, playing for audiences large and small at cafes, pubs, universities, churches, union halls and protest rallies. He has shared the stage with a veritable who’s who of the left in two dozen countries, and has had his music featured on Democracy Now!, BBC, Al-Jazeera and other networks. His essays are published regularly on CounterPunch and elsewhere, and the 200+ songs he makes available for free on the web have been downloaded more than a million times. Most importantly, he’s really good. He will make you laugh, he will make you cry, he will make the revolution irresistible.

Kaleigh O’Keefe works to make connections between fine art, poetry, music, and education. In her fine art practice, Kaleigh is primarily a potter, but she enjoys nothing more than creating spaces that cultivate cross-media collaboration. She discovered poetry through music, and loves to back up poets with her guitar, ukulele, cajone, or voice. Kaleigh is former president of The OFFICIAL Massart Poetry Alliance, where she organized and hosted open mics, poetry slams, and special events, and helped facilitate Louder Than a Bomb Massachussetts in 2013 and 2014. She has organized open mics and poetry showcases inside art galleries as highly renowned as The Bakalar and Paine in Boston, and has created art installations intended as unique open mic venues on the oceanfront and in the deep woods of Maine. Kaleigh is a cofounder of the performance collective Flatline Poetry, and will be graduating this May with a BFA in Sculpture and History of Art of at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Join us on March 19th at 6:30pm at the Eagles Ballroom (805 4th Ave E) for a free screening of “Resistance”, a documentary on the problem of antibiotic resistance, followed by a panel.

“Resistance” explores the emerging pandemic of antibiotic-resistant infections – what’s causing it and what’s being done to combat it.

FDA and Congress have not done enough to deal with this urgent problem, so local resolutions are passing across the country telling Congress to act. And we’re doing the same in Thurston County – learn how you can get involved!

7) Bonus Tip of the Day:

Look for God where you might not expect.
