Greener Blues

Picture This…

Hey Kids!

Most people think of NSA spooks as being tight and professional agents — sort of in the old Dragnet / Jack Webb sort of way (if I’m not dating myself there…)

Actually, when you picture NSA spooks, I would suggest that rather than picturing Jack Webb, you should instead imagine that it is Homer Simpson with a serious attitude that is listening to all of your phone calls and spying on your grandmother…

Greener Blues

I’m afraid that the Thunderbolt has some sad news for you now, cause I’ve got a bad case of the Greener Blues, and I do believe I’m gonna blow a fuse…

Do you want to know what I think? (I am sure that thousands of loyal Thunderbolt fans are at this moment moving to the edge of their seats in anticipation of hearing what I think…)

I think that some of you kids out at the Evergreen State College need to get off your privileged white asses and get to work trying to save your frigging planet because I’m frankly tired of carrying your load.

A little history: I originally moved to Olympia in 2008 and immediately became involved in activism. Since my experience has shown that there are generally too many bosses and not enough workers amongst activist groups, I became a professional ‘worker bee’ and basically researched local activist groups, picked a few to work with, and then asked them what they needed. I began to notice that there was a lot of redundancy and in several instances I saw two groups duplicating work and/or even working at cross-purpose because they had no idea what the other groups were up to — and so in August of 2011, I started publishing what eventually became the Thunderbolt (originally Oly Oly Action) in order to let everyone know what everyone else was up to.

Back in 2011 — when the Thunderbolt was still an idealistic youth — at least half of the calendar was usually taken up by various Greener groups out at TESC. That proportion has become increasingly smaller every year — and now I virtually never hear anything from the Evergreen campus. It was Wednesday last week before I even realized that it was Orientation Week and that I had not heard a single word about any Disorientation Week events other than one event in Red Square that did not specifically state that it was part of Disorientation Week, and it was cancelled the next day anyway.

It is possible that some new people who don’t know me and/or are unfamiliar with the Thunderbolt organized some actions and I simply didn’t hear about it — but I think that there simply were no large organized Disorientation Week events this year.

A couple of kids from WashPIRG showed up at the CoOp last week to educate people about and to muster support against factory farms. When I saw their WashPIRG t-shirts I was thrilled to finally hear of some activism coming out of TESC again — only to learn that these kids were actually from the University of Washington branch of WashPIRG and that they had driven down all the way down from Seattle to work at the Olympia Food CoOp.

So hey Greeners: WTF?

News of the Warm

We just experienced the warmest August since they started keeping records back in 1880. In addition, all records for high ocean temperatures are being blown out of the water (ha ha).

The sea surface temperatures for last August averaged 1.117o F above the 20th Century average, which is evidently very warm.

This American Life

While I often diss on NPR for their tendency to parrot corporate and government propaganda, they also air several truly excellent programs. One of these is This American Life, hosted by Ira Glass. He occasionally comes up with a real bombshell.

Well TAL just aired a show last week featuring a whistleblower within the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and who was assigned to regulate the biggest baddest bad boys of all, Goldman $achs.

This segment will blow your mind.

Meet the Newest Canned Threat: The Khorasan Group

There is evidence that the US government has created a threat out of thin air in order to justify bombing Syria, in that they have elevated the status of a group of radical Islamists called the ‘Khorasan Group’.

Amy Goodman nails this one:

Nuba Reports

Sudan’s war on civilians continues unabated. The Western media continues to completely ignore it. Refugees are now caught on the border between Sudan and South Sudan, meaning that they are now caught between two civil wars.

From Ryan Boyette, the only reporter who is covering this story:

Nuba Reports, based in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan’s South Kordofan state, has verified 1,929 bombs dropped by the Sudan Armed Forces since April 2012. Of those, 756 were dropped since September 2013. Many more have been used in military battles, but all of the confirmed bombings have hit in civilian areas, killing and maiming hundreds. In Darfur, 320,000 people have fled their homes since May as the government-sponsored Rapid Support Force tore through the countryside.”

The Second Third Reich

I have pointed out before that one of the greatest gifts that Adolph Hitler ever gave to humanity was to provide us with a concrete personification of pure evil that we can point at and that we can study. Until recently, whenever someone began acting like Hitler you could point that fact out and this provided an effective barrier against others emulating Mr. Hitler’s example — but it doesn’t work nearly as well anymore and I have a theory as to why…

A few years ago the Republicans began comparing everyone and their grandmother to Hitler. I am convinced that this represented a conscious effort on their part to rob the analogy of its power. They needed to do this because they were not only themselves acting just like Hitler but they seemed to be reading from his playbook. Since it has now become déclassé to compare people to Hitler or to call them a fascist even when the comparison and/or the label are accurate, then I’d guess that their efforts succeeded. Everyone from Barack Obama on down is now free to emulate Hitler without anyone being able to credibly point out the comparisons because calling people fascists has been made so déclassé these days.

And now — just to take things into a full circle of profound irony — the Zionists are acting just like Hitler — (wow) — and evidently some of them now feel the same need to discredit the analogy: An online publication in South Africa called the South African Jewish Report [SAJR] printed an opinion piece by a writer named — get this — Leon Reich. Mr. Reich — who is also the chairman of a local branch of the South African Likud Party — compared — get this — frigging Desmond frigging Tutu to Adolf Hitler!

Dude! Really?

Mr. Reich said this: “Constantly self-appointed destructors of the Jewish people appear in every generation… the latest self-appointed midget of history is Archbishop Desmond Tutu.”

Disregarding physical stature or shoe size, I wonder what size the footprint Mr. Reich’s life will leave upon humanity’s heritage as compared to that of Bishop Tutu?

Then — just to make things really classy — Mr. Reich’s article also featured a black-and-white photo-shopped picture showing a ‘Tutu’ wearing a Hitler-style cap along with a superimposed black moustache…

If you count Mr. Reich’s grandfather and father, then the current Mr. Reich would be the third Reich!

…and all I can think to say is this:

Et tu, Tutu? *

(* Full Disclosure: I stole that last joke from Harry Shearer )

Syrian Follies Redux

So do you remember how we stopped a war in its tracks a few months ago? Do you remember how the O-bomber put on a full-court press to go drop a little democracy on Syria’s ass — and hit a brick wall?

Do you remember how since that time I have numerous times sung our own praises for this achievement? Do you remember that I listed stopping Obama’s Syrian Madness as a major historical achievement on our part?

I seriously jumped the gun. I seriously underestimated their determination to bomb Syria. I seriously underestimated their resourcefulness. It has turned out that all of our massive efforts to stop Obama’s Syrian Madness were completely in vain. He is now making another major push and it seems as if he’s going to get away with it this time.

This time the O-bomber received conscious assistance from our newest enemy de jour; they also have their war profiteers who also benefit greatly from insanity chaos and violent anarchy — and there’s absolutely nothing like a good ole’ American military intervention to recruit a bunch of those people who were just recently forced to retrieve various pieces of their children that were hanging from trees…

The last time, the British parliament handed America’s lapdog at #10 Downing Street a major black eye by refusing to support yet another Middle Eastern war.

This time, the British parliament has voted overwhelmingly to support yet another Middle Eastern war.

This newest ‘enemy’ (who, by the way, were our ‘friends’ until very recently and that that until very recently we armed and financed) cut off a Western reporter’s head on a video thus proving they are sub-human scum that need to be eliminated from the face of the Earth.

The Saudi Arabian government cuts off people’s heads all the time — but Saudi Arabia is our ‘friend’ (at least for now) so it is perfectly acceptable for them to cut off people’s heads.

Our president personally orders the murder of families on a regular basis. Since these families are our ‘enemies’, then that is also acceptable.

A man named Luis Posada Carriles not only admits to shooting down a civilian airliner killing all 76 on board, he actually boasts of it — yet since the civilians he killed were ‘Cubans’ and thus our ‘enemies’, then rather than facing trial for his horrific terrorist act Sr. Carriles is instead living the good life in Florida under the protection of Barack Obama and the United States government in spite of numerous pleas from both Cuba and Venezuela for his extradition.

So these are the rules: Such things are only ‘evil’ when our ‘enemies’ do them.

For the last 13 years every time there has been a foreign policy problem the United States first and virtually only response has been to start dropping bombs on people. Every time they have started dropping bombs on people they have invariably made the situation exponentially worse. Always. Every time.

The Islamic State released that video to intentionally try to draw the United States into another military intervention because American military interventions are the greatest recruiting tool that they have. Osama bin Laden specifically said this; I don’t have the exact quote in front of me, but basically he said that all he had to do was to get three al Qaeda members to go to the most isolated spot on the planet and start waving a flag and they could count on the Americans to call out the troops and spend millions of dollars trying to kill them. Again, I don’t have the figures in front of me, but the Americans spent hundreds of millions of dollars fighting al Qaeda for every dollar that they spent fighting us. One of Mr. bin Laden’s stated strategic goals of the 9-11 attack was to bankrupt the United States — a goal he achieved with spectacular success.

His other two stated strategic goals were to get all US troops out of Saudi Arabia and to drive the price of oil up over $100 per barrel.

He had also achieved both of those ends within two years of the 9-11 attacks.

So excuse me, but who is winning the ‘War on Terror’?

It’s time to get to work…

1) FYI Section:

1A) Eastern Washington Wolf Pack Endangered

This is from Chris:

Time is ticking for the Huckleberry Wolf Pack, one of the state’s most stable. They live in Stevens County Washington. Only 52 wolves are known to be in the state, Gray wolves are an endangered species in Washington.

Sheep have been grazing in an area they shouldn’t be on without the rancher taking precautions he had been advised to take. Against regulations for notification a shift was made from non-lethal intervention being used successfully to deter the wolves from the sheep to shooting them from helicopters. Without notice to the public or even to the stakeholder advisory group the Department consults with to implement the state’s wolf plan, the Department launched a secret aerial gunning campaign on the pack.  When the conservation community caught wind of the ongoing hunting and contacted the Department, we were told “we can’t tell you what’s going on.”  When first contacted, the Governor’s office did not even know this kill order was being executed,  The Alpha female & male should have been protected from execution. It has been learned that the female was killed the most vital member of Huckleberry She has 4 pups from this season. An appeal to Gov. Inslee was filed by groups representing tens of thousands of Washington residents, including the Center for Biological Diversity, Cascadia Wildlands, Western Environmental Law Center, Gifford Pinchot Task Force, The Lands Council, Wildlands Network, Kettle Range Conservation Group and the Washington State Chapter of the Sierra Club.

The governor’s office has 45 days to respond (as of Aug.27th)with a final decision. A review of the department’s wolf plan management, and state lawmakers must legislate a requirement that ranchers engage in good-faith cooperative agreements with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife are needed. Let him know what you think.

Call the Governor Inslee at (360) 902-4111

1B) Olympia FOR Television Series

The Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation produces television programs every month about important and under-covered issues.

This is from Glen:

“Palestine’s Realities with Updates”

by Glen Anderson, producer and host of this TV series

During the summer of 2014 Israel’s military conducted yet another massive assault on Palestine, especially Gaza, the small southern part of Palestine that borders Egypt.  Israel’s military attacked innocent civilians and civilian infrastructure (homes, schools, etc.), and even a United Nations refugee camp.

As usual, mainstream U.S. news media, politicians and government officials grossly misrepresented what was really happening.  They put nearly all of the blame on Palestine and made it seem that Israel’s government was merely defending itself.  They implied equal danger for both sides, even though dozens of times as many Palestinians as Israelis were killed or hurt.  The U.S. House and Senate unanimously passed a resolution rubber-stamping Israel’s attacks on Palestine.

And – as usual – mainstream U.S. news media, politicians and government officials ignored the historical roots of the problem.

The Olympia FOR’s October 2014 TV program discusses the realities and brings to light the historical and current realities.  Our four guests are very well informed:

  • Cindy Corrie  is the mother of Rachel Corrie.  Cindy and her husband Craig have worked tirelessly since 2003 to carry on Rachel’s work for justice and peace in Palestine and Israel.
  • Mohammed Usrof  grew up in Gaza, the part of Palestine near southern Israel and northeastern Egypt.  He has lived and studied in the U.S. for two years and still has close family in Gaza.
  • Sallie Shawl  has a long background of working for peace and social justice, including nuclear weapons and the Israel/Palestine conflict.  Sallie is active with several peace organizations, including Jewish Voice for Peace and various activities in Pierce and Kitsap counties.
  • Steve Niva  teaches International Politics and Middle East Studies at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.  He has written about U.S. Foreign Policy and the Middle East for Middle East Report magazine (, and his writings have appeared in many other respected periodicals.

We taped the TV program on August 28 for airing in October and beyond, so things might change by the time people watch the program.  But the background information, insights, and recommendations for peace and justice will remain valid long into the future, regardless of day-to-day news.

Our guests summarized Israel’s most recent attacks and dispelled some of the misinformation. They also summarized the historical realities of Israel’s ongoing invasions and encroachments into Palestinian land.  When the State of Israel was created in 1948, Palestinians were already living in Palestine, but Israel’s government has been occupying and building new cities (misleadingly termed “settlements”) on Palestinian lands, forcing Palestinian farmers away from their lands, depriving them of water, building a separation wall, and committing other crimes that clearly violate international law.  However, the U.S. government has prevented the United Nations or international judicial bodies from taking action against Israel’s government.

Also, in the Gaza part of Palestine, Israel has destroyed a great many Palestinians’ homes, prevented Palestinians from coming and going from their land, prevented them from importing materials they need for daily life, destroyed infrastructure (factories, electricity, and so forth), prevented much rebuilding, and interfered with their lives in other ways – all in violation of international law.

The U.S. government gives billions of dollars of military aid to Israel every year, and the U.S. blocks any action by the United Nations that would hold Israel accountable for its many violations of international law.

Our guests dispel a number of widely held misconceptions about this ongoing conflict.

Israel’s own peace movement opposes Israel’s oppression of Palestinians.  Likewise, the U.S.’s Jews do not speak with one voice.  A great many U.S. Jews oppose Israel’s policies and seek real justice and peace for Palestinians and Jews alike.

When Americans work on issues related to Latin America, Afghanistan, Iran, or other nations, the people of those nations do tell us that they distinguish between the American people who want justice and peace – versus the U.S. government that is hurting their nations.  This is true also for Israel and Palestine.  Thoughtful people do distinguish between human beings who live in those nations vs. the governments that may act unjustly or violently.  This TV interview is not anti-Jewish or anti- Israel, because our guests clearly distinguish between the people and the governments that claim to represent them.

Some very good organizations are working on these issues, including:

We will be planning events to increase awareness of our movement and to educate our friends and neighbors about what we can do to reclaim our democracy.  It ISpossible and we ARE going to do it.  Our group is open to all political beliefs, because this is about all Americans–not just conservatives or progressives or moderates, but all of us: WE, THE PEOPLE.  We must work together to get money out of politics and return to a government “of the people, by the people, for the people.”

We are also members of the state organization WAmend (Washington Move to Amend): .

Some of the other organizations that are working toward a similar goal to overturn Citizens United include — and we welcome members of these groups to join us:  WAmend, Wolf-PAC, Public Citizen, People for the American Way, Sum of Us, Represent.US, Free Speech for People, StampStampede…

We the People, NOT We the Corporations

On January 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons, entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run our government. Human beings are people; corporations are legal fictions.

We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United and other related cases, and move to amend our Constitution to firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.

“The Story of Citizens United v. FEC”

WATCH and share this short video (under 9 min.) which explores:

>the inordinate power that corporations exercise in our democracy,

>the history of the American corporation and corporate political spending,

>the appropriate roles of citizens and for-profit corporations in a democracy, and

>the toxic impact the “Citizens United” Supreme Court decision is having on our political process.

It ends with a call to amend the U.S. Constitution to confirm that people—not corporations—make the decisions in a democracy.
