Hey Kids!

I have a Special Very Really Bad Danger Alert for you this week!

Keep a sharp eye out for…

The TPP: A Trojan Horse

Normally I encourage people to stop focusing so much on the peripheral battles (the symptoms of the disease) and look more at the underlying causes of everything else (the disease itself).

I am going to make a seeming exception to that rule now because actually nothing about the Trans Pacific Partnership [TPP] is peripheral and in fact the TPP represents the latest iteration of the never-ceasing and relentless campaign by a bunch of very nasty people to take complete control of our world. The Media Machine is largely ignoring the TPP and even when they do mention it they merely parrot the Obama-bots’ talking points about how the TPP will cause milk and honey to begin flowing through the streets.

Make no mistake: The TPP makes NAFTA look like an undernourished wimp.

The TPP represents a corporate sociopath’s wet dream.

Its danger is evidenced by the fact that it is being negotiated in super-secrecy. Some outraged people leaked some of it to the press but representatives and senators who are on the committees that are tasked with overseeing such things are not even allowed to see the text.

The word is that Obama is going to try to fast-track it by Congress before anyone can figure out what is really going on. I haven’t actually seen Goldman $achs holding a gun to his head, but it is there, believe me.

First of all, the TPP is a Trojan horse, i.e. it is being branded as a ‘trade agreement’ (yawn) even though it actually has very little to do with ‘trade’.

Of the TPP’s 26 proposed provisions, in fact, only two [2] are directly concerned with ‘trade’.

The rest are concerned with ‘corporate rights’.

Rather than a ‘trade agreement’, then, the TPP can more accurately be described as a ‘Corporate Bill of Rights’.

Yes, Kids, now that those pesky corporations have been officially declared by the Supreme Court to be ‘people’ just like you and me, they are really becoming full of themselves, let me tell you!

(Actually they were already quite full of themselves — they’re just getting much worse now in lieu of their spectacular series of victories over the last several years.)

However, you don’t need a Frank Luntz to know that acknowledging the TPP is a blueprint for a corporate seizure of a major portion of the planet than they have not already stolen probably wouldn’t sell too well in the current political climate — and thus, it is transformed from an Orwellian Machiavellian Brave New Corporate World Order Recipe for Slavery…

…into a nice boring ‘trade agreement’!

Hocus pocus!

Just one of the very numerous and very many very bad things about the TPP that have been leaked: Under the TPP, if some corporation wants to open a factory that will poison your children and your local government passes some environmental law that prevents them from doing so, then the company can sue your local government for the money that they would have made had you not prevented them from poisoning your children.

In other words, you will be forced to pay them for not poisoning your children.

And that’s not all! No sirree bob! Not by a long shot!

They will not be suing you in your local courts — in fact, they will not even be suing you in American courts! Nope: This suit will be adjudicated by a secret foreign trade tribunal that will be presided over by corporate lawyers who will be appointed by the corporations that will be involved in these cases and these corporate lawyers that are working for the corporations and who are filing these suits will take turns with each other acting as judges and prosecutors in these cases.

Their rulings will be fully binding. There will be no appeals of their decisions.

This is not some Orwellian nightmare. This is all proposed language that is likely to be contained in a treaty that has a very good chance of becoming law if Obama has his way.

FYI: Since the TPP will be a treaty and since treaties are constitutionally required to trump all other domestic laws and since I can assure you that that is one part of the Constitution they will not ignore in this case then look out.

There is even more. Surprise, surprise.

Governments cannot sue companies in these courts. These courts will exist solely so that companies can sue governments. This secret foreign tribunal will decide whether your government should pay damages to a corporation for the profits that your new environmental law will cost them and this secret foreign tribunal will decide how much you should pay. There will be no upper limits to how much money can be claimed from a local government.

There is more. There is much more.

The TPP would make ‘buy local’ laws illegal.

The TPP would make it illegal for states, private groups, or charitable organizations to keep prices down by purchasing medicine in bulk at discount rates. Many of the special deals and discounted rates that low-income countries currently enjoy when purchasing their medicines would also become prohibitive.

‘Copyright’ laws will be used to impose Draconian limits upon Internet users.

The TPP would seriously limit our government’s ability to inspect food and declare it unsafe and will make the government financially liable for all commercial losses resulting from their actions.

The ability to impose financial regulations on large corporations would be seriously impeded.

And for those countries whose constitutions lack a clause about foreign treaties superseding local law and for those who think they can ignore the US Constitution, there is even a clause in the TPP stating that any domestic laws are null and void if they do not conform to their TPP laws.

Get it? A secret foreign corporate tribunal would become a de facto unelected government who’s imposed ‘laws’ will trump the laws that were passed by our democratically elected governments.

And Obama is right on board with this agenda.

Surprise, surprise.

Our good ‘liberal’ senator Maria Cantwell has spoken the praises of the TPP. 10th District Rep Denny Heck is supposedly ‘on the fence’, but what that means is that he really wants to support it but he’s afraid that a bunch of peasants with torches and pitchforks are likely to appear at his office — or even worse, that the labor unions that financed his campaign may desert him — were he to do such a thing.

(I performed a civic duty by informing one of Mr. Heck’s aides, in fact, of both these possibilities…)

The TPP is very serious and it is very important — Obama is pushing hard for this one and he’s got all of the usual corporate shills in both parties ready to go along.

We really need to stop the TPP in its tracks.

You can plug in locally with the Fellowship of Reconciliation if you want to educate and activate on this issue.

Warning: Cover the Children’s Eyes!

Children are much smarter than most people give credit.

Evidently I am in disagreement with a large portion of my generation on this (not an unusual state of affairs as it turns out) but I actually am greatly encouraged by the upcoming generation and they are pretty much it if we have any hope of surviving into the future as a viable culture.

If anyone can do it they can do it.

If I were the King of the Mountain I would immediately impose in intensive course in world history into the curriculum of every school in the country that teaches young children — and this curriculum would not involve having children memorizing a bunch of propaganda or dates or other useless crapola so that they can pass some test that designed to mass-produce unthinking drones to work for minimum wage in one of Jeff Bezos’ ever-expanding network of modern American sweat-shops; I mean studying what historical persons actually did, how they actually did it, and why they actually did it.

And most importantly and most especially: They would be taught history from the point of view of how events affected the lives of ordinary people. That is the most important of the copious and many and numerous things that are left out of the current curriculum. When the American Education Machine covers history at all, they focus purely upon the kings and armies and wars. In my view, the only significance the actions of such people has is in how much their actions screw the common working people — i.e. the people who actually produce most of the wealth that the kings and the armies use in all their various and nefarious activities and without whom their various empires would be empty nothings.

If children studied history in such a manner then they would be more likely to see all of the patterns that keep repeating over and over. If children studied history in such a manner then they would be much more likely to see all the truly alarming parallels between 1930’s Germany and 2010’s America. (Substitute ‘immigrants’ for ‘Jews’. Substitute ‘9-11’ for ‘Reichstag Fire’. Substitute ‘Tea Party’ for ‘Brown Shirts’, etc.)

Anyone who maintains that a cabal of ultra-wealthy people has been working diligently for several decades now to install a worldwide fascist police state is written off as a ‘conspiracy theorist’ and ‘a total nutcase’ at best — and at worst they are killed. This is true even though what they are saying is indeed exactly what has been happening and in fact is exactly what is now happening at this very moment even as I write and/ or as you read this.

Since the people who are installing the police state long ago purchased all of the major media outlets, then they have largely succeeded in delegitimizing and marginalizing the ‘conspiracy theorists’ who vainly beat their heads against walls trying to expose them. The un-thanked battlers for truth can usually prove their contentions beyond a reasonable doubt with hard evidence — but they are systemically ignored and dismissed as fringe lunatics.

Well, if you don’t want to hear my lunatic-fringy rantings then you’d better immediately avert your eyes because I’m about to expose them — in public no less — once again…

(I’m gonna get arrested for that one of these days…)

And now it’s time for a…

Discount Looking Glass Redux

And now, Kids, for your dining and dancing pleasure this week, The Thunderbolt brings you a redux of the Discount Looking Glass by presenting yet another tale from Obama’s War on the Whistleblowers!

This week takes us to Azerbaijan, which is a former Soviet satellite that sits on the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijan is bordered by Russia on the north, Iran on the south, and it is oil rich. In addition, the only way to get oil out of the Caspian Basin is through Azerbaijan or Iran.

Therefore, Azerbaijan is critically important for American imperialist strategic concerns.

Poor Azerbaijan.

Did you know that there are more US Marines stationed in Azerbaijan than in any other foreign country in the world? Have you ever even heard of Azerbaijan?

Anyway, back in the 90’s Azerbaijan was planning on privatizing their state oil company and the Wall Street vultures swooped in. A wealthy investor, philanthropist, and American citizen named Rick Bourke invested in this scheme. Another man named Viktor Kozeny accepted investments from Mr. Bourke and several others, but Mr. Kozeny was a crook and he stole everyone’s money. Mr. Bourke learned of Mr. Kozeny’s crimes and he also learned of massive bribery to Azerbaijani officials that was happening in relation to these crimes.

Mr. Bourke did his civic duty and reported these crimes to American officials.

However, unfortunately for Mr. Bourke, it turned out that Mr. Kozeny was in with a lot of very shady and very powerful people. It turned out that Mr. Kozeny had friends high up in the Russian oligarchy, he was friends with the president of Azerbaijan, who was himself buried neck-deep in the corruption and bribery, and he also had connections with the American intelligence community.

Worst of all: Mr. Bourke’s claims were exposing major corruption in a vital American strategic ‘ally’.

Therefore, Mr. Bourke himself was indicted, convicted, and imprisoned for reporting the crimes. And, as usual in such cases, the criminals themselves continue unabated doing that thing they do so well.

The judge who sentenced Mr. Bourke expressed doubts about Mr. Bourke’s guilt at this sentencing and intimated that Mr. Bourke was a victim rather than a criminal.

Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez cover this in their October 15th broadcast.

Trojan Horse of a Different Colour: Wisdom Infiltrates the Machine!

I am an enthusiastic supporter of knowledge.

Hip hip hooray for knowledge! Three Cheers for knowing things!

You can’t see me, but I have a “Knowledge” pin right next to the American flag pin on the lapel of my suit.

Learning things is just one of those things that us humans do and do so well! The more you learn the more you see that there is to learn and it’s amazing and mind-blowing and learning is just cooler than a cucumber in a freezer!

Having acknowledged that, though, I must say that I consider knowledge to be seriously overrated in our culture when compared to the importance of wisdom — and make no mistake, they are two very different things.

Knowledge is just knowing lots of things.

Wisdom is knowing what to do with the things you know.

Wisdom without knowledge often works just fine.

Knowledge without wisdom can be the most dangerous thing in the world.

It is very rare to see profound wisdom on network TV. It is almost oxymoronic, in fact.

However: I recently seriously dissed on John Stewart and questioned his credibility over the fact that his head writer, Kevin Bleyer, was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Mr. Bleyer was also one of Barack Obama’s speechwriters. Straight up.

In spite of that, though, occasionally I still surf over to The Daily Show because Stewart is so frigging good at what he does…

…and this week Mr. Stewart has very effectively blown my mind…

…and when I Binged Mr. Bleyer to provide you with a link documenting his membership in the CFR, l learned that Mr. Bleyer is now Mr. Stewart’s ‘former’ head writer…

…and that made sense as two of Mr. Stewart’s shows this week completely blew all of my speculation about his credibility out of the water because no Machine-approved interlocutor would have aired either of these segments in the way that Stewart did.

For his October 8th show Mr. Stewart interviewed Malala Yousafzai. While I have heard of her story (she is the then-14 now-16-year old Pakistani girl that the Taliban shot in the head for advocating education for girls) I had never actually seen her before. Wow. Talk about wisdom trumping knowledge: Ms. Yousafzai totally blew both mine and Mr. Stewart’s mind and Mr. Stewart handles it masterfully.

He ends the interview saying that he is humbled by her. I believe he was being honest.

He even seemed embarrassed by the obligatory bells and whistles he had to deploy in his little shtick at the end promoting a book that Ms. Yousafzai has written.

Before this interview I would have been skeptical of a book written by a 16-year-old rural tribal Pakistani girl — albeit one of incredible personal courage.

It does not surprise me that this particular girl could write a best-seller at 16.

I will probably read it.

Then, for his October 9th show, Mr. Stewart interviews the star of a movie that I have never heard of called 12 Years a Slave. The movie is evidently a thoroughly researched and faithful historical depiction of a true story wherein a free black man in the 19th Century North was kidnapped and then enslaved in the South for twelve years by a legendarily cruel slave-master. (The slave-master’s name literally became a synonym for cruelty in that part of the country that perseveres to this day.) The movie sounds incredible and during the interview Mr. Stewart delivers some truly ironic- comic-blistering commentary upon the whole slavery issue and how the modern meme now tends to depict this period of American history.

To complete the irony, the actor Mr. Stewart interviews played the slave-master in the movie — and he is British.

In the end they both concede that slavery was all England’s fault.

(FYI: I just learned from Kris that 12 Years a Slave will be coming to the Capitol Theater soon.)

I have found that providing links to commercial broadcasts is sometimes problematic so there are a few ways to watch the Daily Show that are easy to find. Check out the shows for October 8th and 9th.

I haven’t watched October 10th yet.

It’s time to get to work…

The Thunderbolt Calendar
10/17 — 10/23 2013

1) FYI Section: Sustaining Fund for Tahoe Jones

Tahoe is a street-person activist who has been doing a lot of kick-ass work lately on issues of homelessness. As a homeless activist myself for several years, I know that spending all your time on basic survival eats into your activist time. If you want to indirectly contribute to combating Olympia’s War Against the Homeless, you can help Tahoe keep doing what he is doing.

2) Public Hearing on Proposed Longview Coal Terminal
Thursday October 17th from 4 to 6 PM in Tacoma (Olympia Carpools Available)

This is an important hearing. Make it if you can.

From the TC Pro Net:

Public Hearing on Proposed Longview Coal Export Terminal
Date: Thursday, October 17, 2013
Time: 4PM – 8PM
Location: Tacoma Convention Center

If approved, the Millennium Bulk Terminals proposal in Longview, WA would be the largest coal export terminal in the United States with plans to export 44 million tons of coal annually. This is your opportunity to say NO to this coal export facility and to voice your concerns on what impacts you believe should be considered.

There will be an outdoor rally beginning at 3:30 pm at Tollefson Plaza.

Wanna ride to the hearing in Tacoma (Oct. 17th)? The bus is full, so we’re setting up carpools to accommodate as many people as possible.

If you are willing to drive a carpool or would like to be a passenger, please email Tiffany at by Wednesday, October 16.

It is projected that 8-9 trains of empty, dusty coal trains would wend their way through Thurston County while the coal burned in Asia will worsen the climate crisis. Right now, the three agencies involved in issuing permits are trying to decide which impacts to take into account in their decision making process.

This is the last of 5 hearings. Absolutely everyone needs to comment whether or not you can attend the hearing.

The hearing date/location is below (5-8 p.m. Doors open at 4) Please RSVP today:

• Oct. 17, Tacoma Convention Center, Tacoma
There are a myriad of potential impacts
• from increased train and shipping traffic
• to our fragile eco-system
• to ourair quality and water quality
• to global warming
What’s important is that you voice your concerns.

There were over 124,000 comments submitted last fall concerning the coal export proposal just North of Bellingham. And thousands of you attended in person! Your diligence paid off, and the agencies listened. This proposal is just as disastrous as the previous one you commented on. Please comment today, and consider attending one of the upcoming hearings.

Let’s make it clear that we don’t want coal in Northwest or Southwest Washington. We don’t want it in Oregon. We don’t want it. Period.

In addition to the noise, traffic congestion and air quality degradation, we’d get a new identity as one of the world’s largest exporters of climate-disrupting dirty coal.

This is not us. We’re pioneering the clean energy revolution – building a stronger regional economy and developing clean energy solutions that work for the long haul. Let’s stand up against these dirty plans and demand a better, cleaner future for our children and our communities.

Thank you for your vital part in this movement!

From Oly FOR:

Thurs Oct 17: Carpool to the hearing in Tacoma opposing the proposed Millennium Bulk Terminal, which would export 44 million tons of coal annually, cause horrible pollution, and hurt the climate: (See basic information in the listing for Tues Sept 17 above.) 3) Picket Providence; Tell Them to Put Patients First
Thursday October 17th from 4:30 to 6:30 PM @ Providence St Peter Chemical Dependency Center, 4800 College St SE, Lacey

Hospitals. Important when you need them. are they there for you?

From the organizers:

We all know Providence has been profiting from our community hospital. Providence made $1.4 billion in operating profit 2008-2012, yet still cuts its commitment to our front-line caregivers.

Now an arm of the federal government has filed a formal complaint against Providence and summoned it to appear before an administrative law judge to answer charges that it broke the law when it cut employee healthcare benefits.

Providence could just reinstate employee healthcare plans, avoiding the legal costs of defending its unconscionable actions, but it would rather spend its money on high-powered lawyers than on its own front-line caregivers.

Join us in telling Providence: follow the law, reinstate employee healthcare plans, and put patients before profits. _______________________________________

4) Mi’kmaq Solidarity Action #indigenize
Friday October 18th at 12 PM @ the Artesian Well, Jefferson and 4th, Downtown Olympia

Come stand in solidarity with indigenous people.

This from the organizers:

Mi’kmaq Warrior Society calls for a day of action on October 18 in support of their road blockade and land occupation to prevent the destruction of Earth and Water caused by fracking.

The blockade, going on since Sept. 28 in so called “Rexton, NB” is preventing equipment from illegally excavating Mi’kmaq territory and conducting seismic testing in order to begin the process of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, on unceded native lands.

In response to the Mi’kmaq call for support, this solidarity action is in protest of the complicity of the Port of Olympia in the destruction of watersheds caused by fracking. For months now, amidst public outcry, the port has accepted onto its docks materials essential to the fracking process on it’s way to shale fields in Lakota territory known as “South Dakota.”

Hydraulic fracturing or fracking is the process of literally breaking up shale rock to release petroleum and gas that has been stored there. Industry calls its product “natural” gas though it is anything but natural. Fracking requires the drilling of a well 2,000 – 10, 000 ft deep into Mother Earth, past an existing aquifer or the watertable, in order to extract her life blood – fresh water. The fresh water that has been extracted is then mixed with chemicals and sand in order to be injected at incredibly high pressures and speeds to literally fracture her open. Fracking uses between 1-8 million gallons of water per gas well and is possibly the extraction process which single-handedly destroys the most fresh water.

On October 18 at noon, we will rally at the Artesian Well to celebrate the element of Water and contemplate how important it is for a community to have access to fresh clean drinking water. At the well there will be discussion about fracking and the way it has affected peoples access to drinking water throughout the country. Then we will march to the entrance of the port at Marine Dr. and Franklin to protest the Port of Olympia’s complicity in the destruction of watersheds and aquifers through its support of the fracking industry.

Defend the Earth

please watch this video of the Mi’kmaq request for support through a day of action:

please visit the site below for information about the ongoing struggle of indigenous people for self-determination and to defend the Earth which all traditional societies uphold as sacred.

5) Former CIA Official Ray McGovern Speaks

Ray’s duties included chairing National Intelligence Estimates and preparing the President’s Daily Brief, which he briefed one-on-one to President Ronald Reagan’s most senior national security advisers from 1981 to 1985.

In January 2003, Ray helped create Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) to expose the way intelligence was being falsified to “justify” war on Iraq.
As an act of conscience, on March 2, 2006 Ray returned the Intelligence Commendation Medallion given him at retirement for “especially meritorious service,” explaining, “I do not want to be associated, however remotely, with an agency engaged in torture.”

Ray’s opinion pieces have appeared in many leading newspapers in the US and abroad. His Web site writings are usually posted first on as well as here on, and they are usually then cross-posted widely on other Web sites. Ray has appeared on The Newshour, C-Span’s Washington Journal, CNN, Aljazeera, RT, PressTV and numerous other TV & radio programs and documentaries. (His favorite gig was debating former CIA Director James Wollsey on Charlie Rose on Aug. 20, 2004.) Ray has also addressed a wide variety of audiences in the U.S. and abroad.
