The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

—Martin Luther King

Hey Kids!

I know I said I was only going to include a commentary every other week — but I already have this one written, so here it is.

For those of you who tune in the radio show I probably won’t record this until next week — though maybe not.  We’ll see.

Our theme this week is ‘The Arc of the Moral Universe’.

*****************************************

Two Steps Forward

Sometimes it seems as if the storm is unstoppable and that everything we are doing is pointless and useless, so it is sometimes good to look at the big picture and understand that we’ve actually made major strides over the decades and centuries and while it has been way slower than anyone likes, the overall trajectory has been in the right direction.

*****************************************

Peace

Overall, we are actually winning.  Up until fairly recently in human history, slavery was the accepted norm and people who denounced it were considered out-on-the-far-fringe-radicals.  Women were considered the property of their men-folk (either their fathers or their husbands) and being gay was simply off the table.

The thing is that now we are in a race with time before the Machine destroys the entire web of life and so the needed changes seem to be coming about with agonizing slowness…

There are a whole bunch of awesome dedicated and brilliant people working on all this stuff.  An Iranian gentleman named Moji Aha, who is touring the country on an educational and organizational building journey, just spent a couple of days at Media Island and his bit is in the next section; there are people all over the world who get it and who are ready to stop the insanity.

*****************************************

War

Back in the 60’s there was a very popular song that asked the rhetorical question:  “War?  What is it good for?

Then the song responded to its own rhetorical question with a non-rhetorical answer:  “Absolutely nothing!

That answer is true as far as it goes; it just doesn’t go nearly far enough as war is not only good for absolutely nothing but it is actually very very bad for nearly everyone and everything except a few politicians and a few war profiteers.  If you have ever felt anything resembling pride or honour or patriotism as a result of a war story then you were victim of the most horrendous lie ever told; there is absolutely nothing honourable or prideful or patriotic about any war that has been fought in the last several centuries.

We are told that humans are naturally warlike and that it is just intrinsic to our nature and there is nothing we can do about it so we must arm ourselves to the teeth to protect ourselves from all these other evil people who wish us ill.

That is total bullshite.  Many hunter-gatherer cultures do not even have a word for ‘war’.  All through history, in fact, the war profiteers have been forced to invent ingenious stratagems and go to great lengths in their efforts to bribe coerce threaten and brainwash large numbers of people into ‘dehumanizing’ other people and picking up guns so that they would go enslave murder torture steal pillage and plunder these ‘other’ people.  The entire time the war profiteers are taking in all of the earnings from the enterprises as they sit safely and comfortably thousands of miles from the conflagrations that they orchestrate.  The people who actually do the killing and maiming not only gain nothing but they are usually thrown onto a trash heap when the profiteers are done with them.

In other words:  In war the rich risk nothing and gain everything while the poor risk everything and gain nothing.

To quote General Smedley Butler, formerly the most decorated war hero in American history:  “War is a racket.”

Go travel and meet people.  What you will see everywhere in the world are good and honest people who are living their lives in peace and cooperating with each other to get by.  There are exceptions but they are the exceptions.  The vast majority of the people on this planet want nothing more than to raise their families and support them with meaningful work and not get blown up by a drone in the process.  The Machine actually must go to extensive and exhaustive lengths to coerce common people to go butcher each other — it is not a ‘natural’ instinct at all except in a few folks whose brain-wiring got discombobulated somewhere and anyone who tells you different is either ignorant or a conscious liar.

*****************************************

The Environment

This is a critical issue; as with all the other issues, after spectacular gains in the 70,s it’s been all downhill from there.  As with all the other issues, ever since the 70’s we are taking one step forward for every two steps back.

*****************************************

The Overall Picture

The bottom line here is that all of these issues are the same issue; almost all of our worst problems are due to the fact that the inmates are running the asylum for their own personal gain and to the very great detriment of everyone else in the world — and the issue underlying that is this fracturing and dehumanization and vilification of the ‘other’ that the Media Machine has so successfully inculcated in the world’s population so that we constantly blame each other for our woes rather than our actual oppressors.

This is the info on Moji Agha; He works through an organization called Mossadegh Legacy Institute & America for Nonviolence.

I have mentioned Mohammed Mossadegh many times in the past but for reference; Mr. Mossadegh was a very popular and democratically elected prime minister of Iran in 1953.  He was an advocate of Mahatma Gandhi and he believed Iran’s oil wealth should go for the benefit of Iranians rather than European and American oil companies, and so Mr. Mossadegh committed the Ultimate Sin:  He tried to nationalize BP’s oil fields.  In Mr. Mossadegh’s defense; he was the first in a long line of left-leaning leaders to have this happen to him so at the time there was no precedent yet set…

Predictably (with hindsight, anyway) Mr. Mossadegh was violently overthrown by a military coup backed by — hold on to your seats here Kids — the CIA.  I always mention how virtually no Americans know this name or this shameful chapter of our history even though the blowback from that fiasco continues hitting us to this day — and every Middle Eastern schoolchild knows all about this shameful chapter of American history.

I am intrigued by the work that Mr. Agha is doing because he is trying to accomplish what I keep saying we need to do, i.e. start encouraging diverse groups to put aside personal differences and start working together on the issues that we agree on.  (Mr. Agha will be discussing this at the “Mossadegh Awareness Begets Sanity” event next Saturday at Traditions — see the Calendar.)  We often have different organizations working on the same issue but they often are unaware of each other’s existence — which besides wasting resources and knowledge sometimes leads to working at cross purpose.  Mr. Agha is trying to set up a network of people who do nothing but share information about what everyone else is up to and I am thinking of a similar such network locally here in Olympia, possibly in conjunction with Mr. Agha’s network.  What I envision is one person from every social justice type organization in the county assign one person to sign up for a listserve that informs everyone of what everyone else is up to; if the designated person sees something that directly involves their own work then they can bring it to the attention of their group or organization as a whole.

Here is the info on Moji Agha:

Moji Agha is an Iranian-American bilingual poet, writer of essays, and of a book on how to quit smoking natually.  Hi is a peace, human rights, and Earth activist who is trained as a cultural psychologist.  While he is currently on this “Mossadegh Awareness Tour” (and expects to be on it for at least a year) he lives in Tucson, Arizona and can be reached through his email:  moji.agha@gmail.com

Besides starting the Mossadegh Legacy Institute, Moji has founded many organizations and projects, including the International Institute to Study Climate Change in the Islamic World, the Universal Coalition for Interfaith and Intercultural Knowledge and Action, and also the “Simple Peace Vigil,” an around-the-clock peace vigil that he started on March 20, 2003, and today is the 3,757th day of its continued observance.

He has tried to make “integrated good” contributions to the Move to Amend and the Occupy movements in the U.S., and is active in the non-violent Iranian Green Movement for democracy, justice, and civil spirituality, as evidenced by his founding an initiative called “Truth and Reconciliation Process:  Iran.”

In part due to his Sufi sensibility of implicitly understanding the oneness of all beings, Moji has a unique psycho-culturally informed perspective on how we can help foster a more harmonious and “wisely humble” nonviolent global struggle against injustice, war, and suicidal destruction of human civilization and the planet we share.  This perspective has resulted in Moji founding the “America for Nonviolence” initiative, the birth of its first “indigenous cell of nonviolence” we are celebrating right here, under the name of America for Nonviolence Cell of Pierce County.

Media Island: A Den of Oppression?

Evidently there are some people who are not comfortable at Media Island because all three of the current caretakers are straight white males.

NEWSFLASH:  The caretakers at Media Island are NOT your oppressors.

I am sure that these concerns are very real to the concerned parties — but I am afraid that lately I am finding myself growing highly impatient with circular firing squads.  Believe me; you have enough real enemies without making up new ones — especially when the accused are actually your allies.

NEWSFLASH:  The caretakers at Media Island put in 50 and 60 hour weeks BATTLING your oppressors.

I can tell you all of this from firsthand knowledge.

In addition, this crew is like no other that has been here for many years and both Media Island and KOWA have become expanding and exciting concerns.  Thanks to all the volunteers and KOWA programmers that Matt brought in and thanks to Peter’s literally cleaning the attic and thanks to professional wiring assistance from Mike Pelly and thanks to computer and wiring help from Monte Katzenberger and thanks to various other help from the Media Island Board and many others, the KOWA studio is about to reopen much better than it was before and the wiring for both the studio and the house is almost completed.  We are also about to get a Pro Tools setup for our audio editing.  (I’m not real clear on exactly what ‘Pro Tools’ is — but everyone is very excited about it so evidently it is a very good thing.)  Volunteers and new programmers for KOWA are pouring in.

The fact that this has been largely spearheaded by straight white males is purely coincidental and part of the problem in Olympia is that the town itself is almost pure white; thus straight white males are way over-represented in our local demographic.  I would point out that being a straight white male does not automatically make you into an oppressor.  I would point out that with all of the real oppressors around that would be worthy of your concerns, directing barbs toward your allies is lame counterproductive and stupid.  If you want to miss out on all of the excitement that is happening at Media Island these days because of fears that exist almost solely in your own head then I think that is very sad.

******************************************

Obama-Bots

Another thing I am growing very impatient with is people who still support Obama even after he has proven over and over and over again that he is a fascist.  I am, in fact, having trouble remaining civil with Obama apologists.

Look to the Egyptians:  Unlike the Americans — who are sleeping as their country is converted into a police state — the Egyptians just ousted the second leader in the last few years, this time because he was a theocrat — which is in many ways even worse than a fascist.  Mostly, though, Morsi was ousted because he was a political idiot.  He tried for a naked power grab upon a population that was hyper-vigilant — with predictable results; the demonstrations to remove Morsi were larger than those to remove Mubarak had been.

So where are the Americans?  Watching Fox News?

*****************************************

Double Agents?

I consider the Edward Snowden situation to be a litmus test:  Do you support Mr. Snowden or do you condemn him?  Are you working for the people or for the Machine?

Nearly every leftist pundit on the TV Machine have proven their true colours by condemning Mr. Snowden, including especially Ed Shultz and Melissa Lacewell Harris.

If they are on network TV then they work for the Machine, Kids!

Very disappointingly, Naomi Wolf has also revealed herself as a possible agent of the Machine; I don’t say this definitively because her article trashing Snowden was speculative — but in another way that is even worse than just outright condemnation.

This link is to an article published by a gentleman named Dave Lindorff, who I am not familiar with.  He is accusing Naomi Wolf of being irresponsible for writing an article questioning Edward Snowden’s credibility and asking if he might actually be a government disinformation agent — even though she provides not one shred of evidence to back this assertion.  She raises a few points that might raise some eyebrows and open the floor for some legitimate questions — but that is not what Ms. Wolf did; rather than asking the question, “Is he this?”  Ms. Wolf instead seems to be saying, “I think that he is this…”

…and for someone with the credibility and weight that Naomi Wolf carries, this is an alarming step for her to take — and could raise some questions about her

Though the title of Mr. Lindorff’s article asks whether or not Ms. Wolf is herself a government disinformation agent, Mr. Lindorff reveals in the body of the article that he didn’t really think she was but that he wanted her to feel what Mr. Snowden probably felt upon reading the headline to her piece.

I will henceforward view Ms. Wolf’s work with great speculation.

I normally would have dismissed this story out of hand except for the fact that it was published in Counterpunch, which I have found over the years to be a reliable and iconoclastic source of information.

1A)  30,000 Inmates Now Participating in California Prison Hunger Strike

The prisoners at the California State Prison at Pelican Bay are once again conducting a hunger strike and this time other prisoners throughout the California prison system are joining in; over 30,000 according to the Los Angeles Times.

I am going to include a link to the Times story even though it is the usual shallow corporate pap because this provides an excellent example of the ability of the Machine to brainwash citizens:  There is an instant poll embedded in this article and according to this poll and — in spite of the fact that the California prison system is now famous the world over as a hellish nightmare and in spite of the fact that California’s prison system is currently in federal receivership for failing to provide even the most basic health care to their unconstitutionally overcrowded prison population and in spite of the fact that the California prison system is rocked on a regular basis by major scandals (guards smuggling drugs, guards murdering inmates, guards organizing fights between inmates and organizing betting pools and on and on and on) — in spite of all this almost two-thirds of respondents to this Times poll think that conditions are in the California prison system not ‘inhumane’.

If you have a few minutes, please vote in this poll because that is reprehensible.

In June 2011 groups in the Bay Area supported a hunger strike by some California prisoners protesting conditions in the Security Housing Unit (SHU) at Pelican Bay.  The first hunger strike kicked off on July 1st and was followed by the second one in October of 2011.  During the first hunger strike (HS1) the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) publicly admitted that there were 6,600 prisoners on hunger strike in 13 prisons.  The number of participants in HS2 peeked at nearly 12,000 (11,898 according to the Office of the Special Master, and slightly less than that, 11,619, according to CDCR’s own figures).  Each HS went on for three weeks.  There was no food stashed, as CDCR’s written policy is to remove all food from the cell of any prisoner on HS.

To date the CDCR has not met the prisoners’ quite reasonable demands.  On August 12, 2012, California’s leading prisoners issue an “Agreement to End Hostilities”, which was signed by the leadership of all racial groups, and which called for the cessation of all gang hostilities throughout the state.  So far that call has been honored.  Prisoners are not fighting each other. Instead they are preparing to struggle for justice.

The unified leadership of all races and gangs have issued a call for more than a HS.  On July 8th 2013 all prisoners in Ad Seg and SHU units are to stop eating.  All mainline (general population) prisoners are instructed to withhold their labor, without which the prisons cannot function.  During HS1 and HS2 there was massive outside support, especially in the Bay Area but to a lesser degree in every major California city.  Hunger Strike 3 (HS3) and Work Strike 1 (WS1) will be kicking off in less than two months.  The leadership of that struggle has asked for support not only from prisoners in other states, but from community activists from across the nation.

1C)  Shoreline Master Plan Fight Brewing

Yet once again the City of Olympia is trying to screw all of the people who actually live here for the benefit of their wealthy land developer friends.

Again:  If you want to live in a yuppie Disneyland then I suggest you move to Belleview.  We like Olympia.  We will not allow it to be gentrified.

The City Council has released a proposal which includes building right up to the shoreline on vast swaths of Budd Inlet rather than maintaining a green shoreline with trails and trees.

Straight up.

You would think that what happened the last time the council tried this sort of stunt would serve as an object lesson to future councils — but evidently the power of the Big Buck is just too much for the council-members to resist.

I would suggest they get a clue:  The same people who removed about half the city council the last time they tried such a stunt are the same people who are now up in arms about the zero-setback provisions in their Shoreline Master Plan.

This really gets frigging old.

I’ll keep you posted.

America for Nonviolence (ANV)

Statement of Core Mission, in Summary

The core (and only) mission of the America for Nonviolence (ANV) initiative is to focus on the profoundly challenging but deeply needed task of INTEGRATING (systematically, democratically, and non-ideologically) the invaluably and inevitably diverse (but currently UN-integrated if not dis-integrated) activities of the “divided and conquered” American civil society, in our “we the people” nonviolent struggle against militarism, injustice/inequality, and ecocide; a mother-of-all (initially) American struggles, for a Mother Earth on which all potentials of life, in balanced nurtured integration, can flourish sustainably in the peacefully just bosom of true wisdom.

—————–

The Mossadegh Awareness Begets Sanity in Foreign Policy: An American Tour is being mounted accross the U.S. in 2013, in part to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the overthrow of Prime Minister Mossadegh of Iran.  The tour seeks to reveal, especially to Americans who care about peace and justice, fresh insights regarding the on-going consequences of the CIA’s successful covert operations in Iran in 1952-53 that ended Dr. Mossadegh’s dream for a democratic pluralistic nonviolent Iran, free of “external colonialism” and “internal despotism.”  As in other gatherings of the tour, Moji Agha will review in Tacoma the life, career and legacy of Dr. Mossadegh; the unfortunate long-term breakdown in U.S.-Iranian relations that resulted; and how “we the people” NEED “sanity in foreign policy,” and not just in the U.S.

The Mossadegh Legacy Institute (MLI), of which Noam Chomsky is the Honorary Chair of its very distinguished Board of Endorsers, is an organization dedicated to build nonviolence, understanding, and reconciliation by reawakening an interest in Dr. Mossadegh, the “Gandhi” and “George Washington” of Iran, whose overthrow by the CIA not only threw Iran (and the Middle East) irretrievably off its path toward democracy, but its memory and consequences deeply traumatizes U.S.-Iranian and regional relations to this day. Only by understanding “what might have been” under Dr. Mossadegh and the movement he led may the U.S. and Iran find a “middle” path between an Iran under foreign domination (as under the U.S.-imposed Shah) and an Iran under Islamist extremism (as under radical clerics today) the only path that can lead to real peace.
