Hey Kids!

One of the scariest things about apathy is that it is contagious.  I don’t lose hope because I just can’t do that (sometimes wish I had a choice) and I will keep doing what I do because that is all I know to do, but sometimes it is more difficult than at others.  To be honest it has reached the point wherein only something completely unexpected can save us and probably everything we are doing is farting in a windstorm, but what else can we do?

Almost no one showed up for the Leonard Peltier March or for the Media Island KOWA Benefit Brunch.  The Peltier people made lunches for 300 people and only 25 showed up.  (Full disclosure:  I didn’t go either as I needed to make some $$$.)  As for the MI Brunch; we usually buy food for 20-30 people — and only 8 people showed up.  Leonard Peltier is the penultimate political prisoner and Media Island and KOWA are both invaluable community resources, yet evidently the community is ready to let these things slide away.  I understand that people have lives and long lists of priorities, but come on Kids, we can’t slacken.

I would like to suggest Occupy Medina.

I was literally a joking about this with Bill Moyer at a Backbone Campaign workshop last year — but ever since then the hidden little village of Medina keeps popping up on my radar in various contexts.

If you are not familiar with Medina that is where most of the numerous very rich people who reside in Washington conduct said residence.  It is located just southwest of the juncture of I-405 and SR 520 near Helleview (usually referred to as ‘Belleview’).

I have attached a picture of a banner that the Backbone Campaign erected on the shore of Lake Washington just outside Medina.

Anyway, Medina has just popped up again:  The state senator from Medina is a Democrat named Rodney Thom.  Mr. Thom supports all the environmental gay rights abortion social issues that Wall Street doesn’t care about whilst on the economic front he simultaneously sells out the 99% for the benefit of the 1%.  Mr. Thom is part of the aptly named ‘Road Kill Caucus’, said caucus consisting of Democrats who are dedicated to blocking any progressive change in the state budget or the current tax structure — and they have been spectacularly successful at doing just that.

Mr. Thom has now formed a coalition with the Republicans and they are taking over the Washington State Senate.  The new coalition has named Mr. Thom as the new Majority Leader of the Senate.  The Democrats and the Republicans will now ‘share’ power by splitting up the committees; however, the frigging Republicans will gain control of the Budget, Education and Health Care committees!  (i.e. all the most important ones.)

Off with their heads!  Let the budget cuts begin!

I think Medina should be put on the map.  Occupy Seattle?  Radical Women?  Backbone Campaign?  Washington CAN!?

I have been yelling from the mountaintop for decades now that both major political parties are wholly owned subsidiaries of Wall Street and that both parties act for the benefit of 1% to the very great detriment of the 99%.  As one of uncountable examples of this phenomenon I can point to Washington State:  Washington has been under the complete dominance of the Democratic Party for a long time now yet Washington has the most regressive tax structure in the entire United States.  The average working person in Washington pays 17% of their income toward state taxes while Bill Gates pays 3%.  Unlike a lot of very wealthy people Mr. Gates actually earned his wealth producing a very useful product that I utilize myself every day.  (Some say he stole it, but whatever happened Mr. Gates actually produced and marketed it.)

Thus — albeit with several serious caveats — I say yay Bill Gates!  I say go Bill go!

The fact is, though, that I’m pretty sure Mr. Gates uses the courts a lot more than I do and I’m pretty sure that his trucks wear out the highways a lot faster than I do and all those schools that 17% of my income pays for educates his workforce and so on and on.

Yes, Mr. Gates built it — but he built it upon the foundation of a publicly funded infrastructure.

The irony here is that Mr. Gates could write a personal check for the entire state budget deficit and barely notice it.  I am not suggesting that he should do this and I would not even want him to do this but he can damn well pay his fair share of the public infrastructure that makes his Machine possible.

Both parties keep saying that there is no money.  Actually there is more money than ever; the problem is that rather than building schools and solar panels the money is instead being secretly diverted into secret Cayman Island bank accounts.  Our legislators, in their desperate attempts to avoid taxing their Wall Street pimps, instead choose to cut programs for the disabled, children, and mentally ill people who are utterly dependent upon these programs for their very survival.

I will say that the legislature is vile and despicable because if I said what I really thought of them I would probably be subject to arrest.  These people suck.  Their entire system sucks.  Everything is broken and they are now fighting over the scattered remains of a dead carcass.

A pox on their house and their Senate.

A few Wall Street criminals conduct the most massive criminal fraud in human history and the only result is continued record profits and continued eight-figure bonuses as everyone else crashed and burned because of them — and then they get away with blaming the poor and schoolteachers and honest working people for being the greedy ones and causing all our problems.

Really?  Are you joking?

And their great champion Obama is now pounding on the specter of weapons of mass destruction in Syria.

Gee, where have we heard that one before?

You would think Obama wouldn’t be stupid enough to try that excuse again (even if it’s true) but since he seems determined to continue with all of the very worst Republican foreign policy excesses (and even doubling down on many of them) then we should probably be concerned.

It’s time to get to work…

Green Party recognizes and welcomes Green Youth Caucus

WASHINGTON, DC — The Green Party of the United States has recognized and accredited a Youth Caucus within the party.

“The Green Party Youth Caucus is here to amplify the voice of youth who are ready for a new politics,” said Ursula Rozum, Youth Caucus co-chair and recent Green Congressional candidate from Syracuse, New York.  “We’ve seen a surge of young Green candidates and movement-builders because the elite political leadership of the corporate parties has failed our generation and because the Green Party offers practical solutions to the serious crises we’re facing.  When Green youth become candidates for public office, more than just spokespeople for our party, we articulate the aspirations of our generation for a just and sustainable future.  We invite all youth who share the Green Party’s values to join the Youth Caucus,” Ms. Rozum added.

According to the proposal passed in the Green Party’s National Committee, the “Youth Caucus works to engage youth in Green issues and gives young Greens a voice within the GPUS [Green Party of the United States].  Membership is open to US youth age 14-35 that identify as Green, support the Green Party Ten Key Values, and generally agree with the platform of the GPUS and the mission of the Youth Caucus.”

“We welcome the new Youth Caucus, which we believe will take the lead in building the party of the 21st century,” said Steve Welzer, co-chair of the Green Party of the United States.  “The accreditation follows an election season in which several outstanding young Greens competed for public office.  2012 Green presidential nominee Jill Stein made the concerns of young people central to her campaign, including the need to end crushing student debt burdens, stronger support for public education, repeal of Every Child Left Behind, and job creation.”

The Green Party has three other caucuses: the Lavender Green Caucus (for LGBT members), the National Women’s Caucus, and the Green Party Black Caucus (http://www.gp.org/caucuses/index.php).  A Latino Caucus is in the process of organizing.
