Thunderbolts Online

Hey Kids!

First of all, the Internet went out at Media Island last night so it is quite possible that the Thunderbolt calendar will not be as complete as it normally is. (It is quite full nonetheless, though.)

I may need to make a 5 am trip to Starbucks in the morning to use their Internet to send this out.

Second, I have noted that all of my fancy fonts and colors and formatting for the Thunderbolt often do not translate through email programs onto other computers. Therefore, if you’d like to read the Thunderbolt in all its colourful glory just as it looks on my own computer then you can now go to Dropbox to read it in PDF format:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/i6rno6ovkrdd9vf/AAA5A90fin4L42QYorv0e4Kla?dl=0

I will begin storing the last few weeks’ editions there as well in case you’ve missed any.

I am also going to start keeping the most current version of the Thunderbolt calendar here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/soc2n1s883aj8v1/TB%20Clndr.png?dl=0

And — Dropbox is your one stop shop! You can also now listen to the radio show version of the Thunderbolt on Dropbox:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/cwxy9ax2zy2zkr6/AADQNRP_zQnF7nt0QT5OznpFa?dl=0

I post each week’s radio show on Friday morning, both on www.radio4all.net and at the new Dropbox site.

Enjoy!

Unicorn Captured in California

How is this for a headline: The California Highway Patrol in Madera California recently chased down and captured a unicorn.

Actually — it was a pony dressed up as a unicorn for a children’s birthday party.

The beast evidently didn’t care for the party and split.

The headline was just too good to pass up, though…

http://mynews4.com/news/offbeat/runaway-unicorn-gets-pulled-over-in-central-california

*********************

Dangerous Minds

The fact that Donald Trump was not laughed out of town at the very idea of him running for president — much less that he actually stands poised to win the Republican nomination — is yet another example proving that the United States is like an insane idiot-child with nukes.

*********************

Normalized Insanity

In our culture it is considered barbaric to cut off someone’s head but it is perfectly acceptable to strap them to a chair and zap them with electricity or to give them drugs that cause them to go into convulsions for several minutes before they die.

*********************

They’ll Be Watching You!

I reported last week that the FBI wants Apple to build a back door into the iPhone so they can spy on everyone.

I have since learned that the FBI has several times asked Apple for access to private in-home webcams and baby monitors. It has been revealed that all of those online ‘smart’ appliances, such as thermostats and dishwashers, also send out personal information.

*********************

They’ve Been Watching Her

As all loyal Thunderbolt readers know, politicians say whatever they think people want to hear and then do whatever their corporate paymasters tell them to do. The problem with career politicians is that what people want to hear changes over the years and so they must often explain things they said years before that are totally uncool now — especially when they also have lengthy voting records upon such issues.

Hillary Clinton has been called out because in XXX she said of black criminals that America needed to “bring them to heel”. Then, shortly after saying this, Mrs. Clinton’s husband passed most of the very policies that are directly responsible for the current mass-incarceration of black youth and for the fact that more black people are now in prison than were enslaved in 1863 when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

As almost everyone knows, the Emancipation Proclamation ended legal slavery in the United States.

What most people except Republicans don’t know is that there is a major — and in this case a very relevant — exception to the ‘no slave’ rule. The 13th Amendment states it quite explicitly, in fact: “…except for those duly convicted of a crime…”

http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/constitution_amendments_11-27.html

*********************

Non-Racist Propaganda

And speaking of mass-imprisoning black people — it is a sad fact that Blacks are just as subject to the Machine’s media manipulations as anyone else. After she helped to pass the very laws that led to the mass incarceration of a generation of black youth, Blacks in South Carolina just voted for Mrs. Clinton over Bernie Sanders by a 6-1 margin.

Thus does the Machine fool people into participating in their own lynching.

I recently read a report that Bernie Sanders held a rally in Flint — a majority Black town — and that virtually no Blacks showed up. Then, I watched a clip of Bernie Sanders’ concession speech in South Carolina. The camera panned the crowd showing hundreds Bernie supporters — and I did not see one black face in the crowd.

That is a serious problem for Mr. Sanders.

*********************

Annoying Liberals #237

While blacks people appear ready to help dig their own graves, white people, of course, are not immune to enthusiastically participating in their own self-destruction either. Liberals do so love their circular firing squads, for instance. It seems that with most liberals, if you don’t completely agree with them on every single issue then they take it as a personal insult and they start looking down their superior noses at you and they refuse to work with you or to have anything else to do with you anymore.

My experience has been that liberals tend to spend so much time shooting at each other that they don’t have any ammo left when the true enemy makes a move.

I mention this because I have a new example: For a long time I had a regular Real Change customer every week. I am now speaking in the past tense because when she invited me to an anti-gun rally and when I informed her that that was one issue wherein I was on the other side — she obviously freaked out about that and she hasn’t bought a paper or spoken a civil word ever since even though I still see her every week.

No wonder we’re losing.

*********************

Invisible Prisons

And again speaking of mass-imprisoning black people — just as a lot of serious noise is finally being made about that issue, Donald Trump is starting to make hatred and racism cool again! Radical right-wingers have been organizing like mad ever since Barack Obama assumed office — but thanks to Trump, they are now truly coming out of the closet!

The Southern Poverty Law Center has been documenting these hate groups for decades. According to the SPLC there has been a massive increase in both the numbers and activities of such groups since a black man moved into the White House and they are going nuts now over Trump.

The SPLC spokesperson, Mark Potok, maintains that these hate groups are convinced that the American government has FEMA concentration camps standing all over the country ready to imprison good Americans and that the government wants to take all our guns and impose a police state.

The SPLC itself is not without critics. While I love their overall work and focus and while I consider the work of the SPLC to be absolutely vital — there are aspects of the organization of which I am critical myself, in fact.

Concerning these ‘FEMA camps’ — evidently the left-wing Propaganda Machine has convinced liberals that these FEMA camps are a bunch of paranoid right-wing hooey.

Actually, though, I thoroughly documented the existence of these camps many years ago in the Thunderbolt. I even printed the government’s response to questions about them — I seem to remember that it was something along the line of saying that these camps were built for ‘immigrants and various other groups’.

Why would the government respond to a question about something if that something didn’t even exist?

I also remember that they refused to define what they meant by ‘various other groups’.

The fact of the matter is that Halliburton received a contract to build 30,000 prison beds early in the Bush administration (I believe it was around 2003 or 2004) and the program continued under Obama. Many of these new prisons are now indeed being used to imprison immigrants — but there are many others that few know about that are standing empty all over the country.

And keep in mind: All of these shiny new prisons that Halliburton built are under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security and not the Bureau of Prisons — meaning that all of these shiny new prisons were not built for regular ‘criminals’.

I can actually personally provide some direct evidence for the existence of these secret prisons: Eleven months of my stay at Club Fed was spent at the Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc, California. This was during the winter of 2003-2004.

On the same plot of land as FCI Lompoc there is also a minimum-security federal prison and a maximum-security federal prison. (FCI Lompoc is a low-security facility.) (FYI: The maximum-security facility has since been transformed into a medium-security facility.)

All three prisons are located directly adjacent to Vandenberg Air Force Base, where there are lots of nuclear missiles pointed at lots of people. It is occasionally possible from the grounds of the prisons to see rockets blasting off from Vandenberg.

FCI Lompoc has a capacity of 900 inmates but it housed almost 1,500 at the time. The minimum security FPC Lompoc facility houses 500, and the formerly maximum but now medium-security USP Lompoc houses just over 1,000.

During my stay a fairly powerful earthquake struck Lompoc. It was magnitude 6.6 and it lasted for almost a full minute. I was outside at the time and I had difficulty maintaining my balance and staying on my feet.

After the quake was over I heard one of the other inmates asked one of the CO’s what they would have done with the 3,000+ inmates on the premises had the prisons all fallen down.

The CO laughed and told us not to worry because there was plenty of room for all of us and many more in addition over on the Air Force base.

My main question for the SPLC would be this: Is Mr. Potok honestly trying to maintain that the government doesn’t have FEMA concentration camps standing ready all over the country? Is Mr. Potok trying to say that our government doesn’t want to take all our guns and impose a police state?

Just because the right-wingers are nuts doesn’t necessarily mean they are wrong…

Protest Korean Style

It is illegal to protest in South Korea.

Therefore, Amnesty International projected a holographic protest onto a large building in Seoul.

South Korean officials are now trying to decide if a holographic protest violates the South Korean law against protesting — and if so, then who exactly should be held accountable. How can you arrest a holographic image, after all? Would it be possible to project cops into the picture?

Even if that were possible I somehow think that virtual arrests would provide minimal disincentive…

It’s time to get to work…

1) FYI Section:

1A) Community Rights Ordinance Killed by Washington Supreme Court

The Washington Supreme Court just struck a blow for the totalitarians. They quashed a legally submitted initiative for a vote on a community rights bill in Spokane.

This message came from Janet:

Earlier this month the Washington State Supreme Court reversed the decision of the appeals court regarding Spokane’s Community Bill of Rights.

For those who have been tracking, the appeals court, in January 2015, reversed the trial court decision and ordered the Community Bill of Rights back onto the ballot. However, with the Supreme Court decision now undoing the appeals court ruling, that  (as it stands; there is little to zero believe the court will reverse itself based on the motion to reconsider) has permanently halted any vote on the Community Bill of Rights – this version or any in the future.

Even more importantly, that decision not only squashed the right to vote on the Community Bill of Rights – a duly qualified initiative – it also expanded the power of the judiciary to remove pretty much any local initiative from the ballot.

Please find attached the motion to reconsider filed with the Washington State Supreme Court. It was worth reading because the brief lays out how the court has violated the right of local community self-government of the people of Spokane.

Two things:

  1. Please feel free to send along any comments or questions
  2. If you are interested in having a Washington Community Rights Network call to discuss the decision of the court, what it means for Spokane and what it means for the rest of the state, please let me know, and if there is enough interest I will schedule a date for that call.

Cheers,

1B) Update from Yes on I-735

This message came from Yes on I-735:

On February 26th 1869, the U.S. Congress passed the 15th Amendment to the Constitution affirming the right to vote belongs to all citizens. While the political landscape looks much different than it did 147 years ago, the integrity of our democracy is still an issue today as it was then.

Yes I-735 urges Congress to pass a constitutional amendment declaring corporations are not people, money is not free speech and that we have the right to regulate money in elections and know who is spending it.

It’s time to get big money out of elections!

But we have challenges in achieving that goal – our cash on hand is dangerously low and we need your help to keep YES I-735 alive.  Our estimates show us falling short of our February fundraising goal of $10,000!  Please make a donation today to the YES I-735 campaign.  Your donation directly supports the resources needed to print pamphlets, flyers and get our message to the voters.

We are all enormously moved and grateful for the hard work and dedication that our volunteers and supporters have done for us.  Together we have created a true, genuine and inspiring democracy movement!

We can’t stop now – please donate today!

I-735 is a statewide initiative that urges the Washington state congressional delegation to propose a federal constitutional amendment that constitutional rights belong only to individuals, not corporations, and constitutionally-protected free speech excludes the spending of money.  YES I-735 is directly supported by Washington Coalition to Amend the Constitution (WAmend).

2) Thursday March 3rd

Speed Roommating & Monthly Housing Workshop

3 to 5 pm @ First Christian Church, 701 Franklin St SE

This message came from Renata:

Each month we host a Housing event in 2 parts: a Workshop, followed by “Speed Roommating.”

The workshop is always about Housing: how to find it, how to keep it.

This month’s presenter is Leslie Owen, housing attorney with Northwest Justice Project, who will be presenting on landlord-tenant rights. What’s a 20-day notice? Is my eviction legal? What are my rights? Ask questions and learn from Leslie and your peers in the room. https://www.nwjustice.org/

Followed by Speed Roommating: the best kept secret for Oly folks looking for a room or roommate. Meet people quickly, get their vibe, learn about their house, connect. Or meet someone else without a room, combine forces (and incomes!) and find a place that works for both of you!

Knowledge is power. You got this.

Hosted by PATH (Capital Recovery Center), SideWalk and Interfaith Works (Thurston County, WA).

3) Friday March 4th

Leonard Peltier Mural Project at the Westside Olympia Food CoOp

March 4th at 10 AM thru Mar 6th at 6 PM @ Olympia Food CoOp, Westside Store, 921 N Rogers

This message came from Lala:

Appropriately on the day of March Fo(u)rth, the Westside Olympia Food Co-op will be embarking on a 3 day mural painting project based on paintings done by Imprisoned Native American Activist\Artist Leonard Peltier. This project is in itself an action to raise awarenes to Leonards innoncence and his case for freedom, while also helping build momentum for a reawakened movement in this country to pressure President Obama to grant Peltier executive clemency in this last year of his presidency. We are linking up with a world wide movement for his freedom and at the same time we will be creating a beautiful piece of artwork. Leonard is 71 years old and has been in prison for almost 40 years. This year is maybe our last good chance to do something to help get him free. Volunteers are welcome, most specifically those with painting skills who can dedicate the time. There will be people tabling and gathering signatures. We look forward to seeing you there!

4) Friday March 4th

Protest of PSE’s 20-year Plan

11 am to 5 pm @ 1300 Evergreen Park Drive SW

This message came from Glen:

Olympia Confront the Climate Crisis (Direct Action Committee of Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation) is sponsoring a PROTEST of Puget Sound Energy’s (PSE) 20-Year Plan and DEMONSTRATION against fossil fuels. (See more detail below

11:30 AM: VIGIL at SE corner of Cooper Point and Evergreen Park Drive SW (next to the defunct ARCO gas station) (NOTE: Evergreen PARK DRIVE, NOT Evergreen

12:25 PM: Fossil Fuel FUNERAL PROCESSION down Evergreen Park Drive to the Utilities and Transportation Commission hearing and gather in the parking lot. (1300 Evergreen Park Drive SW, Olympia, WA 98502)
1 PM – 5 PM: PUBLIC HEARING will be held on PSE’s Plan with opportunity for public comment at Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission Olympia (See more details about the hearing below.)

PSE’s 20-Year Plan would retain 2 Montana Coal plants from Colstrip and dramatically increases use of Natural Gas. The plan doesn’t acknowledge the climate crisis, doesn’t invest much in renewables, relies on new natural gas facilities that are dependent on building more gas pipelines through the state, and is basically a business-as-usual document. They can do better. Science, 195 national leaders at Paris UN Conference and world religious leaders have pointed out the need to end the fossil fuel era to reduce worst effects of Climate Change and have a livable planet. It is imperative that our electricity provider eliminate fossil fuel as an energy source and aggressively move to renewable energy sources. Science shows we cannot wait. As Puget Sound Energy customers, we have a moral responsibility to direct an aggressive change to sustainable, renewable energy and halt climate change and preserve a livable climate for our children and grandchildren.

Demonstrate in Opposition to PSE’s 20-year plan:

Meet at 11:30 am at the SE corner of Cooper Point and Evergreen Park Drive (next to the defunct ARCO gas station) on Friday, March 4. We’ll provide a 6 ft. lightweight coffin and some signs. FEEL FREE to BRING YOUR OWN SIGNS with phrases like: Close Colstrip; R.I.P. Coal (or Fossil Fuels); or End Dirty Energy, etc.

At 12:25 pm we’ll start our funeral procession down Evergreen Park Drive to the Utilities and Transportation Commission hearing and gather in the parking lot. At 1 pm the enviro panel will start and will be followed by public comment. You can go in and listen and comment if you wish or you could leave. The session is intended to go until 5 pm.

We’re looking for some horn players to play with the procession. We’d like to have New Orleans style dirge played for our procession. If you know anyone who plays the horn let us know.

For information on the protest and funeral procession: Contact Sue Gunn: 360-918-8012

RE: THE PUBLIC HEARING, 1-5pm (Try to arrive by 12:30pm.)

TESTIFYING: You can sign up to testify at the hearing. Plan for a two-minute cut off. Testifying isn’t required, but we want the Commission to hear from as many people as possible. Not sure what to say or where to start? Please don’t hesitate to be in touch if you have any questions!

The WA Utilities and Transportation Commission will hear public comments about whether the Colstrip Power Plant will be allowed continue to operate for another two decades.  The pending decision has failed to account for the full range of costs of operation and has undervalued clean and renewable energy options.  Come to the hearing to let state regulators know that it’s time for Colstrip – the single largest source of carbon pollution in the Northwest – to retire. 7) Saturday March 5th

Black Against the Empire Reading Group

1 pm @ KXXO Meeting Room, 119 Washington St NE

Come educate yourself about some largely unsung revolutionaries (at least amongst white people).

This came from Economics for Everyone:

Each month we read a book and then for each book we host a discussion of the reading and collaboratively decide what to do with our new insights: Whether to plan direct actions, give presentations, conduct local group research, or something else. The success of these reading groups depends upon active participation, so please come having read the book (or simply as much as you can) and ready to share comments, ideas, and questions!

If you can’t afford the books, we have you covered. Just message us with your name, primary email, and phone number and we will get you the reading.

February’s featured book is Black Against the Empire

“In Oakland, California, in 1966, community college students Bobby Seale and Huey Newton armed themselves, began patrolling the police, and promised to prevent police brutality. Unlike the Civil Rights Movement that called for full citizenship rights for blacks within the U.S., the Black Panther Party rejected the legitimacy of the U.S. government and positioned itself as part of a global struggle against American imperialism. In the face of intense repression, the Party flourished, becoming the center of a revolutionary movement with offices in 68 U.S. cities and powerful allies around the world.

Black against Empire is the first comprehensive overview and analysis of the history and politics of the Black Panther Party. The authors analyze key political questions, such as why so many young black people across the country risked their lives for the revolution, why the Party grew most rapidly during the height of repression, and why allies abandoned the Party at its peak of influence. Bold, engrossing, and richly detailed, this book cuts through the mythology and obfuscation, revealing the political dynamics that drove the explosive growth of this revolutionary movement, and its disastrous unraveling. Informed by twelve years of meticulous archival research, as well as familiarity with most of the former Party leadership and many rank-and-file members, this book is the definitive history of one of the greatest challenges ever posed to American state power.”

This message came from Chris:

March 5 – 10

THE BIG SHORT

ACADEMY AWARD WINNER: BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Dir: Adam McKay / 2015 / US / 130 min / DCP

In THE BIG SHORT, the 2007 housing crisis and subsequent financial meltdown are played for laughs. The action revolves around a small group of savvy insiders who spy impending doom due to the scheming practices utilized in the name of pure greed. Practically every character is an archetype meant to explain to the layman how the mess went down, immersing us in the grim reality of Wall Street and the real governors of the country at large. Hugely entertaining, star studded, and even educational, A.O. Scott of The New York Times says, “The Big Short will affirm your deepest cynicism about Wall Street while simultaneously restoring your faith in Hollywood.” Starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt.

SCREENING: SAT 3/5 9:00; SUN 3/6 5:00; TUE 3/8 6:30; WED 3/9 4:00; WED 3/9 9:00; THU 3/10 6:30

Film Screening: Son of Saul

Various Times at the Capitol Theater, 206 5th Ave SE

This message came from Chris:

March 5 – 10

SON OF SAUL

Academy Award Nominee: Foreign Language Film

Dir: László Nemes / 2015 / Hungary, US, France, Israel, Bosnia and Herzegovina / Hungarian, Yiddish, German, Russian, Polish w/ English subtitles / 107 min / DCP

Auschwitz, 1944. Saul Ausländer is a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando, the group of Jewish prisoners isolated from the camp and forced to assist the Nazis in the machinery of large-scale extermination. While working in one of the crematoria, Saul discovers the body of a boy he takes for his son. As the Sonderkommando plans a rebellion, Saul decides to carry out an impossible task: save the child’s body from the flames, find a rabbi to recite the mourner’s Kaddish and offer the boy a proper burial. Claude Lanzmann, director of the documentary Shoah, gave the film high praises, stating that “it’s a very new film, very original, very unusual. It’s a film that gives a very real sense of what it was like to be in the Sonderkommando. It’s not at all melodramatic. It’s done with a very great modesty.”

SCREENING: SAT 3/5 6:30; SUN 3/6 7:30; TUE 3/8 9:00; WED 3/9 6:30; THU 3/10 4:00; THU 3/10 9:00

Puerto Rico, a U.S. Colony since 1898, is currently facing a severe economic downturn driven by overwhelming government debt, a stagnant economy and colonial policies. Unemployment has risen and thousands have left the island for the U.S. in search of jobs.

What are the causes of the crisis and the resulting human costs?

Presenters:

Eunice Santiago is a mental health counselor who works primarily with the Latin@ communities in Thurston County. She will share her personal perspective on what it means to Puerto Rican raised on the island and now living in the United States, and on the crisis as experienced by family members.

Tom Womeldorff is a member of the faculty at The Evergreen State College in economics and political economy. He will share his perspectives on the current crisis and how the colonial status of the island severely constrains its ability to resolve its debt crisis and boost employment.

Hey Kids!

I am most happy to announce that the Thunderbolt is now being sent to a new list serve that has over 2,000 members! That means that the circulation for the Thunderbolt has just more than doubled! Yippee!

Anyway, the Thunderbolt is a weekly email newsletter aimed at the Olympia activist community. As the little masthead explains, I have news, commentary, a calendar of activist events, and dumb jokes.

The Thunderbolt is also produced in conjunction with a radio program also called the Thunderbolt that you can listen to on KOWA at 106.5 FM within the city limits and/or you can live-stream KOWA at http://kowalp.org/listen/ every Friday at 8 am and 7 pm and every Saturday at noon.

Election Matters

Election season! That grand circus extravaganza held every four years wherein a few rigged voting machines in a few key states will determine which of two lying corporate fascists that Wall Street will install in the White House!

Exciting!

In addition, this election cycle is already providing such an amazing overabundance of fodder for comedic comment that I am starting to feel overwhelmed! How can I possibly keep up with such a never-ending torrent of such incredible folly?

So much ignorance! So little time!

Private Matters

Glen Greenwald has been warning us for years now that the ultimate goal of the US government is to completely eliminate all privacy for everyone everywhere in the world. Nicholas Rockefeller revealed that Wall Street’s ultimate goal is to implant everyone with RFID chips and then keep all of your personal information — bank accounts, health records, police records — all of it. Their goons can then just scan you and instantly know everything about you.

They want to create a world where they can literally monitor every move word and action that you make say or do. If you have information that they want — if you are saying and doing things they don’t like — if they need a patsy to take a fall for something — they know where to go, who to see, and what to do.

Whenever you purchase something in this Brave New World, rather than bothering with cards or cash, the merchant will simply scan your chip. The government, of course, will instantly note what you just purchased.

This system would also allow them to ‘turn off your chip’ if they decide that they don’t like what you’re doing or saying. Then, you would be completely dependent upon handouts from friends and/or family — and since the Machine will know that these friends and/or family are helping you then if they really want to mess with you they can also punish them simply for helping you.

I mention this because the Obombers just made their latest power play toward achieving that end: The FBI wants Apple to build a back door into your iPhone.

This is serious. Edward Snowden has called this the most important privacy issue of the last decade.

To their very great credit, Apple is fighting back.

Let Apple know you appreciate this. (Since contacting actual humans at any of these mega-corporations seems to be an esoteric art that I have failed to master, I’m not sure exactly how you would do that, though…)

Let the Obombers know that you don’t appreciate that. (There are numerous varied effective (and not so effective) methods of doing that. Phone calls to the White House are easy and they do pay attention when lots of calls come in. The same with phone calls to your federal legislative reps.)

FYI: The cyber community is utterly united on this and they have Apple’s back — EXCEPT FOR BILL GATES! Mr. Gates has criticized Apple for their stance.

Fuck Bill Gates. (What do you want from the offspring of an eugenicist?)

In addition to Bill Gates the Obombers also very much want this to happen.

The fact that some Americans can still keep secrets from them drives them crazy.

This is going to be a battle of titans.

‘Legal’ Matters

“Mere factual innocence is no reason not to carry out a death sentence properly reached.”

       Antonin Scalia

There is debate over the worst Supreme Court decision of all time. Dread Scott is usually cited — though Bush v. Gore represents a formidable challenge to Dread Scott for the title. Citizens United also deserved dishonourable mention — and the fact that the same court decided both Citizens United and Bush v. Gore will be noted in the history books. (That is, if we survive long enough to need history books…)

Wherever you stand on this debate, I firmly hold that the quote above represents the most outrageous ‘opinion’ from a supposed ‘juror’ in all human history. It is excerpted from a concurrence that Antonin Scalia wrote in the case of Herrera v. Collins wherein a defendant who had been convicted for killing a cop later proved his innocence — but he missed a 30-day filing deadline for his appeal and thus Texas insisted upon executing him anyway.

(I have described at length in past Thunderbolts the rule wherein anytime a cop gets killed them someone will spend the rest of their life in prison for it — and if they can’t figure out who did it then they will ‘make a case’ against whomever is convenient.)

The Supreme Court agreed that procedure takes precedence over innocence.

Evidently procedure also takes precedence over sanity.

They not only agreed but they agreed by a 6-3 vote. *

Mr. Herrera might have been innocent — but he had not followed proper legal procedure and so he could be legally executed in spite of his proven innocence — and he was indeed subsequently executed.

Scalia simply ruled that Mr. Herrera’s factual innocence did not matter legally. Ms. O’Connor’s concurrence, on the other hand, was in some ways even more disturbing: She maintained that Mr. Herrera couldn’t be ‘innocent’ no matter what he ‘proved’ because he had been found guilty in a court of law with all the ‘protections’ that procedure provides (and we all know that those protections are infallible) and thus the question of ‘innocence’ did not even enter into the matter.

Any time public or religious leaders start taking on the mantle of ‘infallibility’ then you really need to start covering your ass…

Justice Harry Blackmun, in his dissent, said “executing someone you know to be innocent comes perilously close to murder…”

Really? Do you think?

Herrera v. Collins [506 U.S. 390]:

  • Majority: William Rehnquist, Sandra Day O’Connor, Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, and Clarence Thomas
  • Minority: Harry Blackmun, Paul Stevens, and David Souter

More ‘Legal’ Matters

Never fear, though! If they can’t get away with killing them, they can instead just lock them away incommunicado incognito and forgotten into a small cement hole to just sit there by themselves forever and ever after!

It is a thoroughly established and irrefutable empirically proven fact that locking people into conditions of solitary confinement literally drives them insane.

The United Nations classifies any more than two weeks of solitary confinement as torture.

Solitary confinement is still common practice throughout all of the state and federal prison systems throughout our country.

It is now the next day — and in a great example of serendipity I just learned this morning that Albert Woodfox has just been released from Louisiana’s infamous Angola Prison.

Mr. Woodfox spent 42 years in solitary confinement.

42 years in solitary confinement.

42 years in solitary confinement.

Mr. Woodfox has the dubious distinction of spending more time locked up in solitary confinement than any other documented case in human history.

Not only that — but this morning (Monday, February 22nd) I watched Mr. Woodfox give an interview on Democracy Now. He was not the most coherent or loquacious interviewee — but I find it amazing that he is not gibbering incoherently whilst wrapped into a ball on the floor, so whatever.

Congratulations, Mr. Woodfox. Welcome back to the world.

Other than that, I would be unable to think of a single fucking word to say to you, so I think I’m glad that I probably won’t need to.

42 years in solitary confinement.

42 years in solitary confinement.

Primary Matters

I received an inquiry after last week’s Thunderbolt asking exactly who are these Democratic Party ‘super delegates’ that appear poised to steal the nomination for Hillary Clinton?

They are governors, senators, house reps, and high-ranking DNC members.

If you care to peruse the list, you can go here:

Public Matters

With very limited and specifically spelled out exceptions, I think that criminal defendants should be able to present whatever the hell defense that they may wish to a jury.

Not surprisingly, the United States government feels the complete opposite. One of several practices that allow federal prosecutors to maintain their 97% conviction rate, in fact, is that the judge will impose severe limitations upon the defense that you are allowed to present to a jury.

Many activists try to present a ‘necessity’ defense, for instance. This means they wish to argue to the jury that while they technically broke the law, they did so to bring about a greater public good. The government absolutely hates this because first, it presents the opportunity to the defense to prove why they were working for the greater pubic good (and proving that usually does not present a problem) and second, the government absolutely hates this defense because it takes the law out of the hands of the Machine and puts it back into the hands of the people.

It takes little imagination to imagine what authoritarians think of juries finding defendants ‘not guilty’ because their law sucks.

Tim DeChristopher tried to use the ‘necessity’ defense. The judge said no. That meant the jury had no idea why Mr. DeChristopher fraudulently bid on a federal gas lease.

This has contemporary significance now because famed author/activist Terry Tempest Williams just did exactly the same thing; she just attended a gas-lease auction and purchased the rights to over 1,700 acres of land meant for fossil fuel extraction.

Prosecuting Terry Tempest Williams — a famous author with a truly amazing life story that is beloved and admired by millions — will be a completely different matter than prosecuting Tim DeChristopher.

Stay tuned.

Bigoted Matters

If you think being gay or transgender is a sin then don’t be gay or transgender.

What I am wondering here, though, is where the hell you get off thinking that you can use the power of the law to force your bigoted religious superstitions down everyone else’s throats?

Black Lives Matter

I would imagine that having the president of the United States dressing you down could be quite intimidating. I once watched a clip wherein after asking a perfectly reasonable question, George W Bush responded to the reporter who asked the question by asking him, “Who do you think you’re talking to?

The reporter turned white and sheepishly looked at his shoes.

Mr. Bush is lucky that wasn’t me. I have proven throughout my life that not only am I not subject to being intimidated by powerful people but I thoroughly enjoy calling them out. Had Mr. Bush asked me that question, I would have responded thusly: “I am talking to a public official, which means that I am talking to my employee which means that you are talking to your boss.”

Amy Goodman obviously shares this characteristic with me. It is Democracy Now’s 20th birthday; the DN! broadcast for Friday, February 19th is an historical retrospective that I highly recommend watching.

One clip that I had never seen before features Amy Goodman sharply questioning Bill Clinton after his presidency. Her questions concerned East Timor. What she did was to allow Mr. Clinton to respond to criticism — which, in true Bill Clinton style, he did quite ably — but at the end of the interview Mr. Clinton accused Ms. Goodman of being “hostile and disrespectful” when she had been neither. She had merely been questioning him about widely reported incidents. Ms. Goodman herself had been beaten and arrested in East Timor, so she knew of which she spake. She had simply been doing what actual journalists actually should do (as opposed to what the spinners of propaganda that they call ‘journalists’ on the Media Machine these days do) and Mr. Clinton very obviously didn’t like it at all.

Amy Goodman was a reporter for a small niche public radio show and she was speaking to the recently ex-president of the United States — and she wasn’t intimidated in the least. She dug in relentlessly.

Watching that clip greatly increased my respect for Amy Goodman.

In another profile in courage, I have described many times how the Machine always tries to coopt the leaders of insurgent organizations and shower them with compliments and ‘credibility’ in an effort to envelop them within the Machine and thus transform them from revolutionaries trying to change the system into ‘reformists’ trying to bandaid the system (without really changing things very much)…

After almost completely ignoring the concerns of black people for eight years, now that election time has rolled around again (did it ever really leave?) Obama is trying to portray himself as a champion of civil rights. He tried to coopt the Black Lives Matter movement into his charade by inviting the head of the Chicago chapter of Black Lives Matter, Aislinn Pulley, to come to the White House for an opportunity to meet with the president.

To her very great credit, Ms. Pulley told Mr. Obama where he could stick it.

Among other things she said this: “I was under the impression that a meeting was being organized to facilitate a genuine exchange on the matters facing millions of Black and Brown people in the United States. Instead, what was arranged was basically a photo opportunity and a 90-second sound bite for the president. I could not, with any integrity, participate in such a sham that would only serve to legitimize the false narrative that the government is working to end police brutality and the institutional racism that fuels it.

Matters Koch

I recently mentioned that the Koch Brothers are funding people like Joe Arpaio and Kris Kobach.

I also recently revealed the literal Nazi origins of the modern American ‘security’ agencies in general and of the CIA in particular and that the nazification of the CIA was done largely under the aegis of the head of the CIA, Allen Dulles.

The Koch family actually goes way back — and as is invariably the case with über-wealthy people — they have a truly horrific and criminal history — and I hate to shock you, but the history of the Koch family is very intimately intertwined with all of that Nazi/Allen Dulles stuff! Shock! Gasp!

Foundational Matters

A few weeks ago I did a major Thunderbolt on some of the foundations and ‘think tanks’ that the élites use as tools in furthering their various plots of world domination.

I just learned some things on that issue that I didn’t know before and I wanted to share them with you now!

Most Americans labour under the false impression that Congress, the president, and the secretary of state determine American foreign policy. That is not true except on the most surface of levels, for the reality is that Congress, the president, and the secretary of state all actually have foreign policy dictated to them by the Council on Foreign Relations.

According to Laurence Schoup, an ex-French intelligence officer once told him that the CFR is listed in official French intelligence documents as the “true shadow government of the United States”.

The Council on Foreign Relations — founded in 1918 by John D. Rockefeller — is definitely the alpha-wolf of Foundation World. You may remember my depictions of the Brothers Dulles, Averill Harriman, Prescott Bush, and all of those other prominent Nazis from our recent American past?

Every one of these men was a member in good standing with the CFR.

Mr. Schoup (who just wrote a book on the CFR) relates an anecdote wherein just after World War II Dwight D. Eisenhower was evidently complaining to Allen Dulles about the conditions that Harry Truman had placed upon him when appointing General Eisenhower to be the Supreme Allied Commander of Europe. Mr. Dulles reportedly told General Eisenhower no problem — that the CFR would put the word to President Truman and the conditions would be lifted.

In this case the CFR was represented by Averill Harriman — who also just happened to be Harry Truman’s chief of staff. First thing the next morning Mr. Harriman simply placed a memo on Mr. Truman’s desk and suggested that he sign it, which Mr. Truman did without question, and thus were General Eisenhower’s concerns addressed.

That’s how the CFR does things.

Timothy Geithner said of the CFR: “You don’t go to speak to the Council, you go there to get advice…”

In 2009, the CFR set up a second headquarters in Washington DC. (Their main headquarters, of course, is near Wall Street.) Hillary Clinton said of this new headquarters: “It’s good to have an outpost of the Council right here just down the street from the State Department. This will mean I won’t have as far to go to be told what we should be doing and how we should think about the future.”

Their print magazine — Foreign Affairs — is considered by many to be the most influential media source in the world.

Some may retort, “But the smartest and the best should be the people who run the world!”

I feel that I can completely marginalize that argument by suggesting that one simply scrutinize the results of their administration of our world over the last century.

Another very important development in the history and the influence of the CFR came just after World War I when a bunch of academics that had participated in the Paris Peace Conference got together to form an academic organization to study war and peace. This organization didn’t really do much — until 1921, when it was simply incorporated into the CFR. The CFR then used that platform to begin exerting major influence over academia in the United States. Before long they were secretly dominating major portions of the curriculum of universities such as Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Columbia, the University of Chicago, and Stanford amongst others.

Thus, the CFR came to represent a merging of the nation’s leading intellectuals with the money and influence of the plutocrats. The academics were showered with cash and prestige in return for providing academic, ideological, and philosophical fodder to help in fostering amongst the general public a tolerance for — or even an embracing of — fascism.

The Media Machine is also well represented at the CFR. Judy Woodruff and Margaret Warner are both CFR members as was John Stewart’s head writer for the Daily Show.

(When it comes to the actual directorship of the CFR, though — that post is invariably manned by one of the plutocrats.)

Ever since 1918, the vast majority of our presidents and with but two exceptions every one of our secretaries of state were members of the CFR. (Ironically, Hillary Clinton is one of those two exceptions — though both her husband and her daughter are CFR members.) (Chelsea Clinton qualifies as a member because her husband is a hedge fund manager at Goldman $achs — though the fact she is the daughter of Bill and Hillary surely didn’t hurt.) (The other non-CFR secretary of state, by the way, was Cordell Hull, who served in the Roosevelt administration.)

I was already familiar with the Bilderbergers, — but what I didn’t know is that about half of the membership in the Bilderbergers consists of CFR people (over 92% of the American attendees at the annual Bilderberger conference are members of the CFR) and the other half consists mostly of various members of the European royalty — i.e. the Bilderbergers were formed so that the élites of Europe and the élites of the United States could coordinate their efforts.

Then there is the Trilateral Commission. Formed in 1973 (again, by David Rockefeller) the Trilateral Commission came about because when Japan started becoming a major world power and David Rockefeller and Zbigniew Brzezinski suggested to the Bilderbergers that they should start inviting some Japanese élites to join them. The European élites demonstrated their ignorant and self-defeating racist attitudes by replying that absolutely no way no how were a bunch of Nips gonna crash their private party.

Thus, Mr. Rockefeller and Mr. Brzezinski (never ones to let racism interfere with profits) formed the Trilateral Commission so they could coordinate their efforts with those of the newly emerging Japanese élites.

It is not often noted, but virtually every foreign head of state that visits the United States includes a visit to the CFR in their itinerary. This even applied to Fidel Castro when he came to address the United Nations in 1959. During this visit he was also invited to address the CFR — and he evidently knew that this was an important stop because he accepted the invitation.

It did not go well. President Castro ended up saying to them, “I can see that I am not among friends”.

Then he walked out on them.

I think I tend to agree with Mr. Castro’s assessment.

It’s time to get to work…

1B) Update from Flush the TPP

This message came from Flush the TPP:

Corporate Greed Resisters!

This week President Obama said that he is ‘cautiously optimistic’ that he can finish the TransPacific Partnership this year.

This good news is that the votes are currently not there in Congress to pass the implementing legislation. That is because of all of the great work that people across the country are doing to pressure their representatives.

Last week, hundreds protested outside the ASEAN trade summit in Rancho Mirage, CA. In Washington State, the Rebel Alliance marched to their members’ offices in protest and the entire Seattle City Council signed an open letter opposing the TPP. About 100 people gathered in Bismarck, ND to tell their members of Congress to oppose the TPP.

But, we saw during the fight to stop fast track, that the Obama administration can be very persistent in twisting arms in Congress to get votes. We need to keep up the pressure!

Our job is to make sure that the TPP implementing legislation is never sent to Congress.

How do we do that?

  1. Keep the pressure on your member of Congress, especially if they voted for Fast Track. Click here to find out how your House Representative or Senator voted. You can contact them through the Congressional switchboard at 202 224 3121or plan a local action. The next time they will be at home is the week of March 7.

Post your action on the Action Map here. Report back on your action here: click to fill out a feedback form.

  1. Spread the word to others. Join the Tuesday night Twitter storms at 9 pm Eastern/6 pm Pacific. Click here for more information. You can also gather some friends to hand out leaflets. Presidential candidate rallies are a great place to reach hundreds of people waiting in line to get in. Candidates who oppose the TPP are Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Jill Stein. You’ll find flyers on the Tools for Education page.

  1. Join the TPP Resistance call on Wednesday nights at 9 pm Eastern/6 pm Pacific each week! The next call is February 24. We are planning the next large mobilization.

Their Worst Nightmare?

Hey Kids!

I have always been a fan of the common aphorism that if voting actually changed anything then they would make it illegal. For many years now the main reason I have continued to vote is because people died for my right to do it. However, I consider voting to be the least effective activist tactic of which I am aware and I’ve always largely considered it a waste of time.

There is also the secondary reason that since I never vote for Republicans and rarely for Democrats and since I always write in a bunch of people, then voting also provides me with an opportunity to throw a little handful of sand into the cogs of their corrupt machine.

However: The fact that the Republicans are indeed now making voting illegal for large numbers of people in pretty much all they states that they control is telling. I’m not losing any sleep over Republicans pulling dirty tricks and doing nasty stuff — I expect nothing less from them — but I am fascinated by the fact that they are evidently so utterly terrified of people voting.

What, exactly, are they so afraid of? Hmmm…

*********************

Good News!

I know it is considered supremely gauche to speak ill of the recently dead, but over the course of the last century Antonin Scalia was one of the most effective lackeys for the 1% that ever existed — and so for the sake of the human race I’m afraid that I am very glad that piece of human shite is gone from our world.

As far as the practical implications, the Supreme Court is now split 4-4 and since Congress is dysfunctional then it is likely to be a very long time before we have a ninth justice. This means that along with Congress, the Court is also neutered — which is probably a good thing considering the recent record of both bodies.

In addition, it is likely that there are going to be up to three more vacancies on the Court in the near future — and one thing I will say for the Democrats is they tend to pick Supreme Court justices that are not nearly as vile as the ones that the Republicans tend to favour.

I’m still not voting for Hillary Clinton, though…

*********************

My Favourite President

My favourite president was William Henry Harrison. He contracted pneumonia almost immediately upon assuming office and then died three months later, meaning that William Henry Harrison did less damage to our country whilst president than any other that we’ve ever had.

*********************

Am I the Victim or the Crime?

Of all the women in the whole world who are in prison, fully one-third (one out of three) is imprisoned in the United States.

West Virginia has a higher percentage of its women in prison than any other place on the planet.

92% of the women in American prisons have experienced violent abuse.

*********************

A Victim of a Crime

I just stumbled over this when I was checking on free parking for President’s Day on the city’s website: A 28-year old man is claiming that he was taking a break from a long hike near Boulevard Road on the Woodland Trail during the afternoon when a complete stranger without provocation came up behind him and stabbed him several times.

He was seriously injured. The police could not find the perpetrator.

This just seemed like a weird story and very un-Olympia-like to me. Maybe I’ll do some journalistic follow-through.

http://olympiawa.gov/news-and-faq-s/news-releases/021116-woodland-assault.aspx

While we’re on the subject of local news, I just discovered this handy little webpage where the city posts ‘news releases’:

Bernie vs. the Machine

[Barack Obama] was the recipient of the largest number of Wall Street donations of anybody running on the Democratic side ever.

       —Hillary Clinton

The looking glass quality of this election just took a Great Leap Forward in my mind when I heard Hillary Clinton say that. Hillary Clinton was actually trying to spin the fact that Wall Street put Obama into the White House in a positive light!

Wow.

I have been screaming about the fact that Barack Obama is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Wall Street War Machine at the top of my lungs for almost exactly eight years now — and I have been feeling as if I were yelling into a vacuum the entire time. Even as Mr. Obama far exceeded my most dire predictions over the years, the big blind American liberal kept their rose-coloured glasses firmly in place and now Hillary Clinton thinks she can ride to the White House on Mr. Obama’s coattails.

After my screaming into a vacuum for eight years with minimal effect, Mrs. Clinton just managed to inform many millions of Americans of the fact that their president is a tool of Wall Street just by saying that once during a debate on the television machine.

Hillary Clinton evidently expects America to believe that Wall Street pumps hundreds of millions into political campaigns with no agenda other than fulfilling their civic duty.

Hillary Clinton evidently expects America to believe that that this torrent of cash has absolutely no influence upon the decisions that politicians make.

Wow.

Anyway, I am still convinced that the Democratic Party Machine will pull something out of their bag of dirty little tricks to make sure that Bernie Sanders does not win the nomination. There are several legal and several not-so-legal methods of doing this. The ‘Dean Scream’ was one example wherein they took down a potentially problematic candidate (form their point of view, anyway) over literally nothing but a clip taken out of context and played over and over. Then there’s the Elliot Spitzer and Gary Hart solution — though I have trouble believing that Bernie Sanders has any hot babes stashed away on his yacht or anything.

One ‘legal’ possibility is a procedure the Democratic Party implemented after George McGovern’s insurgent candidacy prevailed to win the Democratic Party nomination in 1972 only to subsequently get totally creamed by Richard Nixon in one of the most lopsided elections in American history.

After that, the Democratic Party created ‘super delegates’.

‘Super delegates’, as you’ve probably already guessed, are there to help assure that party insiders can trump the voice of the people.

The party insiders obviously know better than the unwashed masses, after all! Just look at the bang-up job that they’ve been doing recently!

Anyway, in addition to the delegates that are won by the candidates in the various primaries and caucuses, these permanent unelected ‘super delegates’ cast additional votes, and their votes count just as much as those representing the votes of the people. These ‘super delegates’ generally consist of congressmen, senators, governors and other elected officials who represent the Democratic Party élite. Since these ‘super delegates’ are free to support any candidate they want completely independent of any election results, connected candidates often suck them up to them and these ‘super delegates’ often align themselves very early in the campaign season to help build momentum.

For instance, in New Hampshire, Sanders wiped the floor with Clinton by a margin of 60% to 38% — but they split the delegates from New Hampshire evenly thanks to these unelected ‘super delegates’ choosing almost unanimously to vote for party insider Mrs. Clinton rather than the very clear choice of people who —in many cases — were their own constituents.

Thus, the decisions are made in secret back rooms rather than in the election booth — which is just where entrenched party insiders always want them to happen.

Overall, Clinton sits far ahead of Sanders when you factor in these super delegates. As of early August of last year — months before the first ballot was cast — the Clinton campaign had reported a super delegate count of more than 400 out of an available 712.

At that time Sanders had 8 super delegates committed to him. [Eight]

That’s not all: Of those, fully one-eighth of Mr. Sanders’ votes consist of Mr. Sanders himself for — ironically — Mr. Sanders is himself one of these ‘super delegates’.

Now: There are 712 super delegates out of a total 4,800 Democratic convention delegates so the super delegates constitute about 15% of the total. That’s surely not trivial — but it’s also not completely determinative of the outcome, so if Bernie can come in with enough of a lead then this may not matter.

However, if he comes in with a slim lead — they could matter very much.

And the super delegate situation this election is quite striking, especially when compared to Barack Obama’s situation at the same point of his initial election run. For instance, Bernie Sanders’ historic donor base has three times the number of donors that Obama had at this point. Mr. Sanders has also done far better in the early states than Obama did. In the national polls, Mr. Sanders has 37% of the vote, which is far more than Obama had.

Yet — at that point during the 2008 election Obama already had over 60 super delegates committed to his cause. Even Bill Richardson had 25.

Again: Sanders had 8. (Eight.)

(Currently Mr. Sanders has just over 40 while Mrs. Clinton has 394.)

Yes, John Edwards was also in the picture at that time along with Mrs. Clinton — but regardless: The point is that compared to Obama, Sanders is totally kicking ass.

You can track the ‘Super Delegate’ count here:

http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/graphics/2016-delegate-tracker/

The Media Machine has been trying its absolute best to ignore Bernie Sanders — but it has reached the point they can no longer do that.

In addition, Mr. Sanders’ complete lack of support from the Democratic Party is in-your-face and it is brutal. The Democratic Party’s prejudice is so blatant and outrageous that I’m surprised Bernie supporters aren’t raising more stink about it. The Party often ignores marginal candidates but this complete lack of support for a serious candidate that is winning lots of major support is also not in any way shape or form comparable with how things have ever gone down with either Obama or with any other previous candidate — ‘underdog’ or not — that has ever run for the Democratic nomination for over the last 40 years (that I can find, anyway.)

While that lack of support is maddening — it is also evidence of Mr. Sanders’ credibility.

If the Machine hates him so much then he must have something serious going on…

‘Charity’ Clinton Style

And as for the ‘good works’ being done by the oh-so benevolent Clinton Foundation?

I have a perfect representational example: Take Haiti!

The Clinton Foundation certainly took Haiti!

In point of fact, the Clinton Foundation was a central factor in taking Haiti straight to Hell, in point of fact!

Haiti is the result of the only successful slave revolt in history. White World has never forgiven Haiti for that.

The United States has basically been running Haiti for its own benefit since 1915, when American troops conducted an armed invasion and then occupied it until 1934 — though they never really left, if you know what I mean.

There is so much history here — both past and recent — that I just can’t go into it now lest I get lost in that vast forest.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Haitian_history

However, you should know that Haiti is currently experiencing chaos and violence due to widespread election fraud being conducted by the American-backed ruling party, and it is very possible that you don’t know that since this is another figoobliation that the American media is almost completely ignoring.

http://www.counterpunch.org/2015/11/24/defiant-haiti-we-wont-let-you-steal-these-elections/

The reason the current scumbags are in power in Haiti is because the Americans in general and Bill Clinton in particular put them there — for Slick Willie became intimately involved in Haiti’s affairs during his presidency and the Clinton Foundation continues to play a very large and very nasty role in Haiti to this day.

Every time they have free elections Haitians invariably elect people who think Haitian resources should benefit Haitians rather than Americans and so the US is on a never-ending quest to prevent democracy from ever breaking out in Haiti.

In February of 2004 Bill Clinton played a direct personal role in arranging the coup against (and the associated kidnapping of) Jean Bertrand Aristide, the popular and democratically elected president of Haiti.

When the Haitian earthquake happened, the Clinton Foundation was there with the Answer: Sweat shops and luxury hotels! (With all the profits flowing into Western bank accounts, of course…)

The international community, including the U.S. government, pledged $9.6 billion. Nearly six years later — although about $7.6 billion of that taxpayer money has indeed been disbursed — there is virtually nothing to show for it except a few hotels and a few sweatshops. Six years after the earthquake hundreds of thousands of Haitians still remain without adequate shelter.

And remember: Most of that ‘aid’ money never gets outside the beltway much less makes its way to Haiti — and of the barely detectable trickle that does actually reach Haiti, virtually NONE of that makes it through the Haitian government’s vast and sticky web of corruption to reach the actual people of Haiti.

Of USAID contracts in Haiti, for example, more than 50% of those payments went directly into the accounts of contractors in the DC area. Only 1% went directly to Haitian companies or organizations.

Scary People & Not

I was once listening to a right-wing shock-jock and he said this: “I went into this bathroom and there were three really scary guys in there — I mean, they were white, but they were still really scary…

Well, I would highly recommend you watch this interview with Ta-Nehisi Coates.

http://www.democracynow.org/2016/2/10/ta_nehisi_coates_is_voting_for

Mr. Coates is a brilliant, articulate, and a passionate yet calm observer of racism in America — and he is absolutely not threatening or scary!

I mean — he’s black — but he’s still really not scary!

Presidential Predictions

I pride myself of my political acumen and on my ability to intuit hidden political agendas. Over the years my predictions about political events and politicians have almost always been spot on.

When it comes to predicting the actions of the American voter, though — not so much.

Amongst my more famous predictions concerning American voters was in 1980 when I predicted that Americans would never elect a B-grade movie actor that they could go could watch on TV talking to a chimpanzee.

Another was under the theory that no one who voted for Al Gore in 2000 would be likely to switch their votes to Bush in 2004 while a lot of former Bush voters were likely to be very disenchanted with Georgie’s performance — and since in addition Al Gore had actually won more votes than George W. Bush in 2000 — then I firmly predicted that Bush would never win reelection in 2004.

True, Mr. Bush stole that election (he actually stole both of his elections) but he had to garner enough actual votes in order to be able to steal it in a credible manner and considering his performance as president — I find that he could still do even that to be utterly baffling.

In that same vein, not too long ago I predicted that Donald Trump would be a flash in the pan and that Jeb Bush would probably end up as the Republican nominee facing Hillary Clinton.

David Cay Johnston is, in fact, the only observer that I know of who predicted that Trump would be a major factor in the Republican primary and Mr. Johnston even predicted that Trump might win it.

Mr. Johnston is evidently much more intuitive with the voting public than I am.

Mr. Johnston agrees with me, by the way, that should Mr. Trump win the nomination then that would assure that almost anyone that runs against him would win. (Trump is trumping everyone else on both positive and negative views in the general public.) Mr. Johnston did add the caveat that should there be a major ‘terrorist’ attack next October then Trump might even win the election — but otherwise, like me, he figures that only insane people will vote for Mr. Trump — especially if any of a score of major skeletons that are still not very well hidden inside several of Mr. Trump’s closets are ever exposed. Mr. Johnston seemed surprised that the press was not pressing on Mr. Trump about his drug-dealing private pilot or about Mr. Trump’s mob connections or over the fact Mr. Trump is the biggest slumlord in the world or Mr. Trump’s many refusals to pay his employees or Mr. Trump’s many refusals to pay many people who provided many services and/or goods. (Mr. Johnston’s surprise is evidence that he is more in tune with American voters than he is with the American Media Machine — otherwise he would know that ignoring nasty things concerning public figures is what the Media Machine does best!)

Mr. Johnston also agrees with me that a Trump nomination would mean the end of the Republican Party as any kind of viable entity for the foreseeable future — and thus all good leftists should do everything they can to assure that Mr. Trump wins that nomination!

http://www.democracynow.org/2016/2/15/stop_hate_dump_trump_new_campaign

I’ve been saying it for years: The Republicans are toast.

Now we need to take down the Democrats.

It’s time to get to work…

1A) Economics for Everyone Reading

Since this event requires you to read a book first, I thought I’d give you a head’s up. They’ll be meeting to discuss this book early next month.

This came from Matt:

Economics for Everyone’s next featured book is Black Against the Empire by Joshua Bloom and Waldo E. Martin.

We will be meeting at the Mixx96.1 conference room, near Cafe Vita,  Saturday March 5th from 1-3PM to discuss the book.

Informed by twelve years of meticulous archival research, as well as familiarity with most of the former Party leadership and many rank-and-file members, this book is the definitive history of one of the greatest challenges ever posed to American state power.”

http://www.ucpress.edu/book.php?isbn=9780520271852#desc

For each book we will host a discussion of the reading and collaboratively decide what to do with our new insights: plan direct actions, give presentations, conduct local group research, or something else. The success of these reading groups depends upon active participation, so please come having read the book (or simply as much as you can) and ready to share comments, ideas, and questions!

If you can’t afford the books, we have you covered. Just message us with your name, primary email, and phone number and we will get you the reading.

1B) Update on Title 26

This alert came from Don:

A CALL TO ACTION

Title 26, the Increased Enforcement Code on land use, is scheduled for a vote by Thurston County Board of Commissioners (BOCC) on Tuesday, February 23 in Building 1, room 280 at their 2 o’clock meeting. Public comment will be open.

Last fall, under continuous protest from rural residents against this egregious encroachment on property rights, the BOCC tabled Title 26 until now. If adopted on February 23rd, it will place every rural property owner in jeopardy of being penalized when seeking to permit land or home improvements.

Title 26 adds Civil Penalties to land use.

  • Civil Penalties are punitive in nature and will make all land use violations criminal misdemeanors.
  • The commissioners have been informed by attorneys that Title 26 lacks due process. Their own legal counsel has testified that current infraction and negotiation procedures are the most effective enforcement tool. If Title 26 is passed, law suits will be filed at taxpayer expense.
  • The Board is abdicating their responsibility to represent rural Thurston residents by removing themselves from the process and appointing an unelected director to arbitrarily decide penalty enforcement.
  • Each day of violation will be seen as a “new violation” and will incur a daily penalty of $263 or $513 accruing up to 30 days; a potential $15,390 increase in mitigation costs.
  • No permits will be approved for new improvements if there is an existing violation on the property of any kind.
  • No more “as is” sales or purchases of homes.

Title 26 will ruin lives and slowly eliminate our sovereign right to be self-responsible and live an independent self-sufficient lifestyle on the land.

Please act now! Flood the phones and email to rescind Title 26

  • E-mail the commissioners private assistants
  • Phone the commissioners private offices
  • Include your thoughts on the above points of fact

Cathy Wolfe: 357-2470 larkinv@co.thurston.wa.us

Bud Blake: 786-5414 nehls@co.thurston.wa.us

Sandra Romero: 786-5747 pilcher@co.thurston.wa.us

  • Let’s show up in mass at the meeting on February 23rd
  • Sign up to speak for 3 minutes and make your sentiments known

5) Sunday February 21st

Climate Community Gathering: Where Do We Go From Here?

1 pm @ United Churches Fireside Room, 110 11th Ave SE

This message came from Bev:

This meeting will be a follow-up opportunity for those who attended the January 31st presentation of Naomi Klein’s movie ‘This Changes Everything’ and the discussion afterwards to explore and seek direction as we plan what we will do to stand-up to climate change and preserve a livable climate for our children and grandchildren.

Our institutions and leaders have not been able to effectively act to mitigate this greenhouse gas pollution threat to life as we know it on earth. Thus, it has become imperative for us in civil society to act to effect change. We have myrid options available to us in our local community. The Olympia FOR’s Confronting the Climate Crisis group has made a difference in our community; we will be even more successful with you on our team!

Please don’t miss this important exchange of thoughts and ideas! Bring your most creative self to the Fireside Room to brainstorm with your friends and neighbors who are all in this together.

See you there.

This is not the Really Really Free Market, but I’m sure they also have that famous non-money back guarantee if you are dissatisfied with your non-purchase for any reason!

This came from Emma:

A “really free market” is a temporary free store created through community participation and mutual aid. Please bring what you’d like to give away and take what you need. A community potluck, with free food, clothes, books, company, and whatever else folks decide to bring.

Official Thunderbolt Nerd Alert!

Hey Kids!

On the science-nerd front, there has been a major advance in the battle for a Unified Field Theory of Everything! Physicists have come up with a new theory called M-Theory (Membrane Theory) that evidently adds an eleventh dimension to String Theory’s ten dimensions and evidently M-Theory thus encompasses String Theory within it!

I have no frigging idea what all that means but I do know enough about it to know that this is a very exciting development.

On the health care front, scientists have discovered the cause of schizophrenia. It turns out that there is a portion of our brains that activates whenever we talk to ourselves inside our heads. Evidently there is a gene that causes this part of the brain to activate without conscious control — and thus schizophrenics start hearing voices inside their heads.

They haven’t figured out how to cure schizophrenia yet, but they now have a specific target…

Astronomers, meanwhile, are positing the existence of a 9th planet way out in the Kuiper Belt beyond Pluto. They haven’t found it yet but they know it is there due to perturbations in the orbits of other celestial bodies.

We could use a new planet right about now…

*********************

Official Thunderbolt TPP Alert!

Now is the time for all good members of the 99% to educate yourself about the TPP — and then to flood Congress with phone calls forcefully denouncing the TPP!

Remember: The TPP needs to be approved by Congress. In spite of both the Obombers and the Wall Street Machine pulling out all stops to push this through, due to massive anti-TPP activism the congress critters are now running away from the TPP like it just developed a serious case of halitosis — and it is no longer clear that Congress would approve the TPP were they to vote on it now.

This is especially true in the House.

No presidential candidate with over 5% in the polls has yet to publically endorse the TPP. (Hillary Clinton, it must be noted, was all for it before she was against it, though…)

Since our local Olympia rep is a corporate shill and a rubber stamp for Barack Obama’s police state then I would especially encourage Olympia voters to call Denny Heck and I would encourage Olympia voters to call Denny Heck often.

While you’re at it, remind Mr. Heck about his vote a few years ago to continue funding the NSA’s theretofore-secret program to illegally spy on your grandmother.

Remember: Other than a massive cash donation, hiring a good lobbyist, or a personal visit to their office — a phone call is the most effective method for a private citizen to influence their political representatives.

*********************

Official Thunderbolt Cretin Alert!

There are certain people who I suspect are deeply concerned about the popularity of Bernie Sanders. Many of these people are also the most powerful people in the world. Many of these people basically make their livings by overthrowing ‘unfriendly’ governments. I suspect that these people would consider any government headed by Bernie Sanders to be such. Thus, I suspect that Mr. Sanders should watch his back if this continues for if Bernie ever reaches a point wherein it looks as if he might actually take this thing (imagine Bernie winning the California primary, for instance) and I suspect that those shadowy characters would have no hesitation in implementing the Robert F. Kennedy solution to the Bernie Sanders problem…

*********************

Minority Report

If you think that the right-wingers’ heads were exploding over a black president — think what they’re going to do if we elect Bernie Sanders as the first Jewish president…

*********************

The Definition of Insanity

Here we go again! After so many spectacular military successes in the Middle East over the decades — yet another falsely identified nail is once again about to get hit with the Great American Hammer!

Yes, Kids, after we stopped him in his tracks a couple of years ago when he tried to ‘send the troops’ into Syria, the Obomber has finally managed to sneak them in through the back door!

You see? Persistence pays off!

We have to destroy ISIS, after all — and as we have proven over and over again — sending in American troops is the best formula known for mass-producing yet more ‘terrorists’!

Which means more fodder for instilling terror into the hearts of the American public and more profit for Boeing and GE and more influence for the Wall Street War Machine in Middle Eastern affairs!

Yippee!

*********************

The New Normal

The UN just issued a report accusing both pro-government and anti-government forces in Syria of committing heinous war crimes.

Under the ‘new normal’ it would actually be news these days if they weren’t.

Dividing the combatants in Syria into ‘pro-government’ and ‘anti-government’ forces also vastly oversimplifies what is actually happening in Syria right now: I’ve documented a lot of this previously but there are actually about eight different ‘sides’ in the Syrian madness and the alliances are not always clear. For instance: According to what American officials say, the central target of American forces in Syria is ISIS — but according to what they actually do, their central target in Syria is Bashar al Assad.

*********************

Bernie is a Sexist!

Hillary Clinton has already pulled the ‘sexist’ card! (Excuse me, Mrs. Clinton, but your desperation is showing…)

When Bernie Sanders accused Mrs. Clinton of being a shill for Wall Street she said that she couldn’t be part of the ‘establishment’ because she is a woman!

She then accused Mr. Sanders of ‘smearing’ her by pointing out the irrefutable fact that Mrs. Clinton has received and is currently receiving barrelsful of moolah from Wall Street.

Mrs. Clinton accused Mr. Sanders of ‘smearing’ her — even though I believe that a ‘smear’ requires that someone say something that isn’t true about the allegedly smeared person.

Mrs. Clinton challenged Mr. Sanders to provide one instance where she changed a vote as a result of a campaign contribution.

Funny she should say that, of course, because here in the Thunderbolt I have been documenting repeated and outrageous examples of Mrs. Clinton doing just that for many years now — and as far as accusing Mrs. Clinton of ‘adjusting’ her vote depending upon campaign donations — Mr. Sanders has yet to even mention Mrs. Clinton’s TRUE source of campaign cash (though it is not legally considered to be associated with her political fundraising) and that would be…

[Drums, Fanfares, Wild Cheering, etc.]

THE CLINTON FOUNDATION!

[Drums, Fanfares, Wild Cheering, etc.]

Yes, Kids, the infamous Clinton Foundation! That great cesspool and grand bazaar of influence pedaling! Your one-stop shop for people like Saudi Arabian sheiks, foreign oil companies, foreign mining companies, CEO’s of major drug companies, and many many others! Would you like to purchase influence with the Clinton Machine? Well I’m here to tell you, Kids, you too can make a massive ‘contribution’ to the Clinton Foundation and than stand amazed as you watch Mrs. Clinton announcing a complete reversal on a policy decision that is highly favourable to your cause!

And you need not even fear any legal repercussions! Even though this is highly illegal and totally unethical — under our ‘new normal’ the only way anyone will ever be prosecuted for anything is if they were to become a whistleblower!

Bernie Sanders MUST know about all this. That leads me to question why (as far as I know) he has yet to even mentioned the Clinton Foundation during this campaign?

Then, during one of her recent debates with Bernie Sanders, Mrs. Clinton surprised even me when I heard her say this:

I was very flattered when Henry Kissinger said I ran the State Department better than anybody had run it in a long time”.

I must confess that — as accustomed as I am to politicians saying insane things — to have Mrs. Clinton spend an hour trying to burnish her ‘progressive’ cred — and then to go right from that directly to boasting of an endorsement from one of the most heinous war criminals of the 20th Century? (Bomb Cambodia and Laos, anyone?)

Henry f*%#ing Kissinger?!?! Are you f*%#ing kidding?!?!

Is Hillary Clinton REALLY that profoundly tone deaf?

Hillary Clinton has now inspired me. Sometime in the near future I am going to nominate Mr. Kissinger for an official Thunderbolt Most Evil Person in History Award soon so that I can educate Thunderbolt readers about this purely evil cretin — who is evidently so very fond of Hillary Clinton!

How appropriate.

Stay tuned.

*********************

Flinty Reality

On the domestic front, this Flint water thing is turning into a BFD. (That’s “Big F*%#ing Deal” for those of you who have yet to learn to speak text…)

This is looking nastier and nastier the more that emerges.

For instance: It turns out that the white people in Genesee County continued to get their water from the Detroit system.

It was only black people who were poisoned by their own government.

In additional addition, it turns out that prisoners in the local jails were forced to drink the water up until week before last. Then, they were given only 24 oz. of bottled water per day — which represents only half of the daily-recommended intake of water for a typical human.

There are now serious people calling for serious jail time for whoever is responsible.

Many people are saying that the Republican governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder, is responsible.

Rick Snyder was the driving force behind Michigan’s ‘Emergency Manager’ law. Immediately upon signing said law, the governor almost immediately picked someone to come in to displace the democratically elected government of Flint and to replace it with someone who assumed literal dictatorial control over local budgets and policies.

This ‘emergency manager’ answered directly to Governor Snyder.

Governor Snyder even used a tactic as old as slavery: He deployed one of his houseboys to actually stick the knife in: Flint’s ‘emergency manager’ was a black man.

It was this ‘emergency manager’ that made the decision to switch the source of the water supply (but only for Flint’s Blacks).

This is an almost textbook example of the Machine’s mindset concerning what they deem to be ‘disposable people’.

Any mindset that even allows the concept of ‘disposable people’ to even exist is unacceptable, especially when found in those that wield public power.

It’s time to get to work…

1B) Update from Flush the TPP

This message came from Flush the TPP:

Corporate Greed Resisters!

Great work! Last week, TPP Resisters across the United States and in 6 other TPP countries protested the signing of the TransPacific Partnership in New Zealand.

In New Zealand, tens of thousands of people turned up to shut down intersections in the Central Business District in the morning and hold a massive march in the afternoon. We are still trying to catch up with posting the report backs. If you want to see great photos and videos of the actions, you’ll find links to the report backs here or check out our Facebook page.

The commercial media barely reported on the signing of the TPP, but the social media buzzed with photos and videos showing the widespread opposition.

We are having an impact! Sen. Rob Portman, who serves on the Senate Finance Committee and was the US Trade Ambassador under President Bush, came out against the TPP today (he has a strong anti-TPP challenger in his race). And all signs show that the TPP is stalled in both houses of Congress.

Our job is to make sure that the TPP implementing legislation is never sent to Congress.

How do we do that? People are already organizing actions to target their Representatives and Senators during the Presidents’ Week Congressional Recess Feb. 12 to 21. Click here for more information about that. If you are planning an action, send the details to info@popularresistance.org. We will post and share it.

There will also be a protest at Rancho Mirage on February 15 while President Obama hosts a trade summit there. Click here for details.

And join the TPP Resistance call on Wednesday nights at 9 pm Eastern each week! Evan Greer of Fight for the Future will tell us of their plans for a big mobilization this spring.

Click here to register for the calls.

All of the actions last week had a big impact! We are building that movement of movements, that “tremendous people power” that will overcome their “total profit plan.” Keep up the great work. Spread the word. And encourage people to take action.

Here are a few things everyone can do:

  1. Call the White House at 202 456 1414 and tell them you oppose the TPP.

  1. Call your members of Congress at 202 224 3121 and tell them to oppose the TPP.

  1. Join the weekly calls to get informed and to join in the organizing efforts.TPP Resistance calls are on Wednesday nights at 9 pm Eastern/6 pm Pacific. The next call will be TONIGHT February 3, 2016.  CLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THE CALL.

1C) Message from Moms Rising

“Losing my childcare support from Working Connections upended my whole life. With the subsidy, I was working toward a great future for me and my kids. Losing it meant it was hard for me to work and take care of my family.” – Angelica, Washington.

Stories like Angelica’s are not uncommon in Washington. And that’s simply NOT. OKAY.

Lawmakers in Olympia have just a few weeks to ensure our children and families have the access to affordable, high-quality early learning, like childcare and preschool, that they need. As legislators work to finish the 2016 supplemental budget, now is the time to remind them that children and families can’t wait another minute for greater investments in their future.

Click here and (if we already have all your information) your name will instantly be added to an open letter asking lawmakers in Olympia to support children and families by investing in early learning and end long waitlists for affordable high-quality preschool and childcare.

At a time when the cost of childcare outpaces the cost of college tuition in our state, and when there are 2,676 children on the waitlist to get into ECEAP, our state’s public preschool program, and when access to affordable, high-quality childcare is out of reach for so many Washington families, we need leaders in Olympia to step up and invest in our littlest learners. [1,2]

Without greater investments in early learning, Washington children will have less access to high-quality early learning opportunities like preschool and childcare that will help them build the foundation to achieve their greatest hopes and dreams.

Unfortunately, Washington families could face a double-whammy if legislators don’t act: the current funding for Working Connections Child Care, a subsidy provided to working families at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Line to help with the cost of high-quality childcare, isn’t enough to meet demand, and more than 2,000 families are facing long waiting lists. AND a growing wait list of children and families in need of ECEAP, our state’s public preschool program, makes this a crucial moment for Washington legislators to act.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

A waiting list for preschool and childcare is a recession-era austerity measure that now stands to hurt parents’ ability to work, and kids’ opportunity to learn and thrive. Our lawmakers took a big step forward for kids last year with the passage and funding of the Early Start Act. This year, our families can’t afford to take a big step backward.

With childcare costs often exceeding the costs of housing, college tuition, transportation, and food — and here in Washington we rank 6th worst in the nation for the cost of childcare for infants, [3, 4] — families need state leaders to invest in early learning, including childcare and preschool, more than ever.

*When you click this link, you instantly sign on if we already have all your information.

The case for early learning couldn’t be more clear. Investing in early learning is good for families, businesses, and the economy. Children who have high-quality early learning experiences are more likely to succeed in school, graduate from high school, gain stable employment, and are less likely to be arrested later in life. [5] And when families have access to quality early learning opportunities, parents are able to focus on work without the stress of unreliable care. Not to mention that investments in high-quality early learning programs actually save future dollars for everyone. For every one dollar invested in high-quality early learning, we see a return of up to eight dollars! [6]

Sign now and remind legislators to do big things for our littlest learners and invest in early learning: http://action.momsrising.org/sign/2016WAearlylearning/?t=8&akid=7597.63680.C8Q58w

Washington CAN is a statewide organization and they kick ass:

This President’s Day, Monday, February 15, we are traveling to Olympia for a Lobby Day and we would like to invite you along. We will visit our state capital and call on lawmakers to put politics aside and put the issues you care about first.

Our allies at NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will join us; in part to emphasize our Stand With Women campaign. The campaign urges lawmakers to Stand With Women this session by passing legislation to expand access to women’s health care, abolish workplace penalties for pregnancy and raise wages to ensure equal pay for women.

Please click this link to let us know you are interested in attending.

We are still working on the exact details but we know we will depart in the morning and meet at the Washington State Labor Council at 906 Columbia Street SW #330 in Olympia at 10:00 a.m. There, we’ll prepare for the day and then hit the capital campus for a full day of speaking with elected officials and staging actions to make our voices heard.

“No Methanol Refinery” Comment Hearing

2:30 pm @ Meeker Middle School, 4402 Nassau Avenue NE Tacoma, 98422

This is out of town but it would directly affect us.

This message came from Alan:

Lock arms together to denounce this reckless proposal to build a methanol refinery in Commencement Bay and on the shores of the Puget Sound.

More details TBA but plan to arrive early (4:30 / 5pm) to rally and to signup to comment.

If peddlers of this petrochemical plant (the largest in the world) got their way, China would siphon off precious resources to produce more plastics and leave our communities’ on the hook with all the hazards and a plethora of poisonous byproducts. If you need another reason to be opposed to this plan consider the fact that by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in our oceans (as noted in this article by the Guardian –

Official Thunderbolt Election Strategy for 2016

If you want to assure that a Republican does not win the White House this election then you should do everything you can to encourage the candidacy of Donald Trump. While Mr. Trump is decidedly popular amongst the insane, he is decidedly unpopular amongst everyone else.

As for the Democrap Party, I would note that people who support Bernie Sanders do so because they passionately believe in his message. People who support Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, do so either because she paid for them or because they are single-issue organizations (such as Planned Parenthood) that look only to their own narrow interests without consideration of the larger societal interests. (That is one of the problems with single-issue interest groups.)

The Opposite of the Truth

I love how politicians can say the exact opposite of the truth and make it sound so believable!

Here is an example:

The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money

       Margaret Thatcher

This is a rare instance of a statement from a politician that is absolutely true — if you substitute the word ‘capitalism’ for ‘socialism’.

Then you have instances where someone is telling the truth from a completely false premise — such as Ted Cruz:

Iowa has sent notice that the Republican nominee and the next president of the United States will not be chosen by the media, will not be chosen by the Washington establishment, will not be chosen by the lobbyists, but will be chosen by the most incredible powerful force, where all sovereignty resides in our nation — by we, the people, the American people.

       TedCruz

Keep in mind that Mr. Cruz was put into the Senate by Goldman $achs — however — the public perception of Mr. Cruz is that he is a ‘populist’ and he is definitely not part of the established Republican Machine, so the perception is what people voted for and so Mr. Cruz’s victory is significant (with the caveat that anything even remotely resembling anything ‘normal’ in this election cycle has been Trumped by an elephant in the room).

In addition, Bernie Sanders just fought Hillary Clinton to a tie in Iowa even though a few months ago he was 40 points down, he had no money, and he had neither organization nor name recognition in Iowa.

In addition to that addition — as Mr. Sanders himself noted in his speech — he was in that position whilst taking on the most powerful political machine in the world — and he fought it to a draw.

Then we had Barack Obama who — during his initial campaign for president in 2008 — told the unions that he had their backs and he made several ‘promises’ to them about opposing ‘free trade’ agreements in general and NAFTA in particular — at the same time that his top economic advisor, Austan Goolsbee, was up in Canada assuring the Canadians that this was all total BS that Obama had to say in order to get the union vote and that he was actually an enthusiastic supporter of ‘free trade’ agreements.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama_presidential_primary_campaign,_2008

I am mentioning this because a journalist named Lee Fong just tried to hang Mrs. Clinton from her own pétard by asking if she planned to release any of the transcripts from any of the private speeches that she gave (and for which she was very well-compensated) to Goldman $achs.

Mrs. Clinton just laughed.

https://theintercept.com/2016/01/23/clinton-goldman-sachs-laugh/

Yeah. Ha, ha, ha. That was really funny, Mrs. Clinton.

When asked to defend the $675,000 that she has received in ‘speaking fees’ from Goldman $achs (this is out of a total of $125 million the Clintons have collected in such ‘speaking fees’ over the years) Mrs. Clinton actually told the truth and compared herself to Barack Obama! She pointed out that Mr. Obama received ‘significant campaign donations’ from Wall Street — yet he had passed the so-called Dodd-Frank ‘reform’ bill.

The Dodd-Frank ‘reform’ bill, of course, represented the equivalent of a bandaid on a severed artery. It was a ‘feel good’ bill and it was passed strictly to fool the American people into thinking that something was being done about Wall Street corruption — when actually ‘doing something about Wall Street corruption’ was the complete opposite of what was actually going on.

*********************

Billionaires and Ballot Bandits On the Loose!

Speaking of fighting corruption, Greg Palast is back on the beat! Once again he is exposing billionaires and ballot bandits right and left! (Though mostly on the right…)

The Brothers Koch have pledged to spend $750 million purchasing politicians, the bulk of which will be going to Republicans (with a few Democrats thrown in to hedge their bets…)

And — can you guess who is the number one contributor to the Republican Party Cause? (At least ‘on the record’…)

That dishonour goes to a gentleman whose name you virtually never hear on the Media Machine — so let’s give a big heartfelt Thunderbolt raspberry for:

PAUL SINGER!

[Cheering! Wild applause! Pandemonium!]

Yes, that Paul Singer, the very personification of vulture capitalism!

Let me tell you, Kids, that Paul Singer represents the cutting edge in the purchasing Third World debt for pennies on the dollar and then using ruthless cutthroat no-holds-barred methods of collecting upon that debt! Paul Singer has completely drained the treasuries of several Third World countries (literally impoverishing millions of people in the process who hadn’t been doing all that well to begin with) all so he could increase his already obscenely large personal fortune!

(Mr. Singer is backing Marco Rubio, by the way…)

In this one single man is contained every ugly reprehensible cruel and murderous nastiness that so personifies our wonderful system that so lavishly rewards thieves and so severely punishes the honest.

Argentina even managed to negotiate terms for their debt wherein a large part of it was forgiven due to the fact that this debt had been accumulated by a previous right-wing administration that had been utterly corrupt. The IMF and even Goldman $achs was ready to go along with this deal — but Paul Singer refused to honour this arrangement and he insisted upon full payment even though he had himself had purchased the debt from a discount broker paying only pennies on the dollar.

And by the other way: If the TPP passes then Singer will be freed of the few (largely token) restraints upon his vile endeavours that still currently exist…

Meanwhile, out in nutcase land, Joe Arpaio is endorsing Donald Trump.

Joe Arpaio is the infamous overtly racist sheriff of Maricopa County [Phoenix] and Sheriff Arpaio was one of the central movers and shakers in passing all of the overtly racist laws against immigrants that were so controversially passed in Arizona a few years back.

However — when considering clowns such as Donald Trump or Joe Arpaio, you must remember that there is a huge Machine behind these men and that that Machine is no frigging joke. The Koch brothers fund Mr. Arpaio, for instance. In spite of the image that Mr. Arpaio intentionally projects, he is no hick sheriff from the boonies. He is funded through an organization called Donor’s Trust. When the feds started coming down on Joe Arpaio like a ton of bricks for his overtly racist policies, the Donor’s Trust provided the good Mr. Arpaio with an attorney named Kris Kobach.

In addition to being Joe Arpaio’s attorney, Mr. Kobach is also the Secretary of State of the State of Kansas. Mr. Kobach is thus in a position to purge lots and lots of voters from the voter rolls…

…which brings us full circle back to the ballot bandits! THEY’RE BAAAACK!

If you have the same name as a convicted felon or even if you have the same name as someone else who also voted then you may find your name purged from the voter roles if you live in any of 29 Republican controlled states — for these states have gotten together and they are all cooperating in their various voter purges! This new system is called ‘Interstate Crosscheck’, and Greg Palast has discovered that ‘Interstate Crosscheck’ has a list of over 7 million voters that they plan to purge from the voting roles for ‘voting twice’ in any of the 29 states that are participating in the new ‘Interstate Crosscheck’ system.

Voting twice in the same election is a serious federal crime subject to a five-year prison sentence — yet in spite of having 7 million people accused of committing this crime, not a single one has been prosecuted! They even have their addresses and ID numbers!

And I’m sure it is coincidence, but the overwhelming majority of these seven million names are black, Hispanic — and they are even starting to purge Asians since Asian support has shifted over to the Democrats over the years. If your name is Fauntleroy Wentworth III and you have the right zip code you will probably not be purged from the roles. If your name is Terrell Washington and you live in the wrong zip code, then you probably will purged from the voting roles because another Terrell Washington voted in Alabama last year.

Mohammed Mohammed — a very common name amongst the Muslim community — is also on this list. ‘Interstate Crosscheck’ has determined that all of these Mohammed Mohammed’s are the same Mohammed Mohammed voting hundreds of times and so there will likely be dozens of not hundreds of Mohammed Mohammed’s who will be unable to vote in the next election even though they are fully qualified to vote and even though they have a Constitutional right to vote.

Amongst other names to be purged: John Brown and José Rodriquez.

‘Interstate Crosscheck’ is in force in the two central swing states in the next election too, i.e. North Carolina and Ohio. Ohio has already targeted 675,000 names (in almost exclusively black areas of the state) for removal from the voting roles.

Alabama began requiring all their voters to obtain driver’s licenses or state approved ID’s — then they closed nearly all of the DMV’s in all ten of the majority black counties in the state.

There is a black state senator from Alabama named Hank Sanders. 50 years ago Mr. Sanders walked across the Edmund Pettis Bridge with Martin Luther King to win his right to vote.

Senator Sanders has just been purged from the voting roles of Alabama.

Senator Sanders noted that this is like he has now marched once again over the Edmund Pettis Bridge only this time he is marching backwards.

And now we move full circle: It turns out that the ‘Interstate Crosscheck’ system is being operated out of the office of the Secretary of State of the State of Kansas, the Koch funded attorney for Joe Arpaio, Kris Kobach!

What a small world these people live in!

War Crimes R Us

Meanwhile, the bizarre looking-glass reality into which we are descending just got even wackier: Now the Republicans are complaining that Barack Obama is a wimp for not murdering more innocent civilians than he already has.

First we had a ‘journalist’ named Hugh Hewitt insisting that the ability to order the mass murder of civilians is a requirement for a presidential hopeful (as opposed to a reason for a lengthy prison sentence). Now we have Marco Rubio insisting that he would ‘carpet bomb’ Syria — and instead of being arrested for conspiracy to commit mass-murder he is being seriously considered for President of the United States.

Evidently war crimes have become official American policy.

*********************

Economic History 101

For several decades following World War II, the 1% was taxed over 90% on personal income over the equivalent of a few million dollars, banks operated in regulatory straightjackets, and labour unions effectively defended the interests of working people (even as they simultaneously defended the interests of organized crime).

During this period the unions assured that wages and increases in productivity roughly corresponded; as workers created more wealth per hour worked they also shared in the increased profits that those increases in productivity created.

That all stopped in the 1970’s. Suddenly — even though productivity continued to exponentially increase — wages suddenly stopped growing and eventually even began declining.

All those extra profits from the increased productivity were instead now being lent back to those very same workers at extortion-level interest rates.

As a result of these changes, the last 30 years has witnessed the most massive ‘redistribution of wealth’ in all human history.

In the 1970’s the United States was the world’s leading lending nation.

We are now the world’s leading debtor nation.

The way you create real tangible wealth (as opposed to ephemeral ‘paper’ wealth) is to take raw materials and to make something useful out of them. In the 1970’s the United States was the world’s leading importer of raw materials and the world’s leading exporter of manufactured goods.

We are now the world’s leading exporter of raw materials and the world’s leading importer of manufactured goods.

I have heard economists on the Media Machine talk about the difference between a ‘recession’ and a ‘depression’. They almost invariably manage to do this without actually shedding any light whatsoever upon said difference.

For the record: A ‘recession’ is a normal adjustment to a capitalist economy. They usually don’t last long. A ‘depression’ is a long-term downturn that lasts for many years. Long term zero interest rates are a sign of a depression (much less negative interest rates such as Portugal and several Wall Street banks have recently announced).

As for the touted ‘economic recovery’: The United States has been stripped down like a stolen car in a chop shop and it has been parted out. The 1% has gutted our country. In spite of all their rosy predictions I can guarantee you that there is no economic recovery coming.

Americans do still create a lot of real wealth (as opposed to ephemeral ‘paper’ wealth). Most Americans are completely unaware of the fact that Los Angeles is one of the biggest manufacturing hubs in the world, for instance.

However — our production of actual real tangible wealth (as opposed to ephemeral ‘paper’ wealth) is a fraction of what it once was, both proportionally to the rest of the world and in the inflation-adjusted population-adjusted total.

As for the economy: We have been limping along more or less in neutral for over a decade now. Even there we have only managed to do even that because China has been experiencing double-digit growth rates and they have been carrying everyone else along in their slipstream.

However, China’s double-digit growth rate has been fueled by — yep, you guessed it — a massive debt bubble! As always proves to be the eventual case with massive economic debt bubbles, the Chinese economy is now collapsing catastrophically and it is starting to look like they may take the entire worldwide economy down with them.

Stay tuned.

Uneasy Street

The Catholic Church is incredibly rich. The Catholic Church is the largest landowner on the planet and they wield major political influence. They play all the same nasty games that any other major political power plays but they conduct their nastiness under colour of religion, which makes it even worse in my book.

The financial shenanigans engaged in by the Vatican Bank over the centuries are well documented and they are thoroughly reprehensible.

Anyway, me saying anything good about a Catholic pope is something of an historical event — but I must confess that one of several good things that the current pope is doing is attempting to clean up the Vatican Bank.

Cleaning up corruption is always popular with the public but it is always decidedly unpopular amongst corrupt people and since corrupt people tend to wield all the power and pull all the strings and control all the bankbooks and blackmail information and since they often have access to accomplished assassins then they tend to present a formidable challenge to actually cleaning up corruption, especially when it is as pervasive and systemic and as long-term as that of the Vatican Bank.

Thus, while being the Pope’s Economic Czar may seem like a plum position, the current occupant of that position, one George Pell, is under serious fire for daring to shake up the existing status-quo — especially when he publically announced that he had discovered hundreds of millions of Euros in ‘off-the-book’ accounts.

Uh, oh! Sounds like dirty deeds done dirt-cheap to me!

Get the Lead Out

Most Americans know — from heartbreaking experience — that lead poisoning is no joke. They also know that there is no safe level of lead. Any measurable amount of lead in your system not only causes damage but it causes an increasingly wide variety of truly horrendous damage the more you ingest.

Most Americans know that — but here is something I just learned that has totally blown my mind: New studies show that lead poisoning also destroys the part of the brain responsible for impulse control and that this leads directly to great increases in violent behavior. As part of their evidence they presented the fact that fro the 1950’s to the 1970’s there was lead in our gasoline and there was lead in our house paint — and that about 20 years after they started saturating our environment with lead there was a massive increase in violent crime.

Then, about 20 years after they took the lead out of our gasoline and house paint and after they had remediated the homes of everyone except poor black people, the violent crime rate nosedived.

Yes, correlation is not necessarily causation — but sometimes correlation is causation and the authors of this study claim that they have a ton of other evidence to go with this correlation — so this is big.

Terrorism of Another Colour

I have reported at great length about the fact that the only way to be labeled a ‘terrorist’ is if you are Muslim, an environmentalist, or an animal rights activist. I have reported numerous instances of domestic right-wingers conducting serious acts of terrorism without being labeled terrorists. There was the guy who literally flew an airplane into a federal building — but he was a white right-winger so he wasn’t labeled as a ‘terrorist’. I have reported about how a Cuban gentleman named Luis Posada Carrilles has publically admitted to shooting down a civilian airliner and killing over 70 people back in the 70’s — yet he currently lives in Miami under the full protection of a United States government that refuses to extradite him to either Cuba or Venezuela, both of whom seek extradition for the mass murder that Mr. Carrilles openly boasts of.

If you look at the definitions for ‘domestic terrorism’ in the US code, the recent armed occupation of federal property in Oregon also provides a textbook example — yet the perpetrators are only being charged with impeding federal agents.

Had a group of Muslims tried this very same stunt I can guarantee you that they probably would have been droned within a couple of hours.

*********************

Ghost Soldiers

And finally: In another demonstration of that unique genius exclusive to American foreign policy makers, it turns out that yet another major problem with the Afghani army (yes, that very same Afghani army that so many of our American tax dollars went toward arming and training) yet another serious problem with the highly lauded and loudly applauded Afghani army is it turns out that their army is made up largely of ‘ghost soldiers’.

Now make no mistake: These ‘ghost soldiers’ are paid very well (largely with American tax dollars) to defend Afghanistan from all enemies foreign and domestic!

The problem is that these ‘ghost soldiers’ don’t actually exist except on paper.

Their pay is evidently going into the pockets of corrupt army officers.

These ‘ghost soldiers’ are of proving to be of highly limited utility when the Taliban comes rolling into town — though unlike the actual soldiers, at least the ghost soldiers don’t throw down their weapons (for the Taliban to find) before they run away…

It’s time to get to work…

Film Screening: Truth

Various Times @ Capitol Theater, 206 5th Ave SE

This is a film about how Dan Rather got railroaded for telling the truth.

This came from the Olympia Film Society:

February 6 – 11

TRUTH

Dir: James Vanderbilt / 2015 / Australia, US / 125 min / DCP

Truth is a gripping newsroom drama that details the downfall of CBS news anchor Dan Rather. Robert Redford portrays Rather as a veteran newsman whose belief in the rules of journalism is as strong as his conviction to reveal the truth. When his producer, Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett), unearths a story that could nab then-president George W. Bush in a blatant lie, they run with it. Truth delves into the details of this case, revealing the startling lengths reached by those in high places to withhold facts from the public. Steven Holden of The New York Times calls Truth “a beautifully executed journalistic thriller.”

SCREENING SAT 02/06 6:30; SUN 02/07 5:00; TUE 02/09 9:00; WED 02/10 6:30; THU 02/11 4:00; THU 02/11 9:00

Mom’s Rising is a most excellent organization out of Seattle that I have worked with before. They are evidently expanding into Olympia and that would be a very good thing.

This message came from Nina:

Want a fun coffee date with other moms that also makes an impact?

Come hang out with other Olympia moms at 3 pm, February 7th at Traditions Cafe to learn about MomsRising and our work to make Washington a better place for working families while enjoying some great conversation, sharing tips, and finding ways to make a difference in Olympia!

Click here to find out more and RSVP: http://action.momsrising.org/go/6494?t=6&akid=7514.63680.4McA07

Meet other moms, have sparkling conversation, and have an impact. These conversations are needed. Why? Right now, childcare often costs more than housing, transportation, food, and even college tuition for many families. [1] The US is the ONLY developed nation without universal maternity leave. [2] And right here in Washington, pregnant women are still being fired for needing simple accommodations like bathroom breaks. [3]

That’s just NOT okay.

Together, we can have fun, support each other, and get a conversation started about what we can do to help improve the lives of women and families right here in Washington — and we won’t be the only ones. MomsRising moms are coming together across the nation in-person to talk about important current topics and hang out with other cool, secret superhero moms. So our conversation will be part of a much longer conversation to create change in our communities!

Let us know if you can make it to this Moms Meetup for some coffee, great conversation, and the opportunity to make a difference.

Here is what you need to know about this FREE event:

When: Sunday, February 7 from 3-4:30 p.m.

Where: Traditions Cafe, 300 5th Ave SW, Olympia, WA 98501

What: A coffee date with other local moms for great conversation, resources, and the 411 on MomsRising.

Who: Moms in the Olympia area (that means YOU!) Kids are, of course, welcome!

Think you can make it? Let us know here so we can save a seat for you: http://action.momsrising.org/go/6494?t=9&akid=7514.63680.4McA07

If you have any questions about the meetup, contact me on the Moms Meetup event page and we hope to see you there!

— Nina Perez, Maggie Humphreys, and Adriana Hutchings

P.S. Want to host your own Moms Meetup about early learning or another topic? Email nina@momsrising.org to find out how you can get involved.

A Plea to America from the Thunderbolt!

Hey Kids!

The Wall Street banks are stealing you blind and we’re here trying to do something about that but we’re very seriously short handed — so if you can tear yourself away from your cat videos and your football games for a minute, we could sure use a hand…

*********************

A Plea to Olympia from the Thunderbolt!

Tomorrow [Friday] I will be posting a radio show that I produced back in 2013 within a couple of months starting the radio show version of the Thunderbolt. In case anyone was paying attention over the years, listeners would have noted that they heard Poppy Seed Street Lessons #1, #3, and #4 — but there was nary a Poppy Seed Street Lesson #2 to be heard!

You never heard Poppy Seed Street Lesson #2 on KOWA back then because — believe it or not — this piece was so controversial that it was censored from KOWA’s airwaves!

It is so controversial that — while I ultimately disagreed with the consensus-minus-one decision not to air it (especially since the ‘one’ was me), even then I could see their points for not airing it on public airwaves.

Anyway, this week has a 5th Friday meaning that for the radio show this week I’ll be airing an edition of The Thunderbolt’s Greatest Strikes — and as an added bonus I will also be including a second additional and online exclusive Greatest Strikes show that will include that infamous banned Thunderbolt!

Friday morning go here: http://www.radio4all.net/

Type ‘The Thunderbolt’ into the search box and then click on the “Censored” show.

You won’t want to miss the regular show this week either! (If you miss the regular scheduled broadcast on KOWA then it will also be posted at Radio4All right next to the Censored show.)

Two hours of some of my best audio Thunderbolts! How can you resist?

*********************

Two Kinds of People

There are two kinds of people in the world: There are those who say that there are two kinds of people in this world and there are those who don’t.

*********************

Three Kinds of People

I have mentioned this before but I want to remind you again: Back in the early 20th Century the 1% arranged things so that American academia split the fields of economics, political science, and the humanities into three completely separate spheres — and decreed that never shall the twain meet. (Never shall the thrain meet?)

They did this even though it is impossible to truly understand any one of these fields without having at least a basic understanding of all three.

(This was also when they began using their money to manipulate the curriculums of American academic institutions.)

They did this because they don’t want academics to truly understand how all of these fields interact with each other. They split these fields up this because someone trained in only one of these fields doesn’t have an overarching understanding of how all three work together — and the 1% doesn’t want academics to understand this because an inevitable result for anyone that does begin to understand how all three of these fields interact with each other is that they can’t help but also begin to understand how utterly unfair, evil, and insane our current system is.

That is why they don’t want academics to truly understand any of these fields.

Abortion

You don’t see that word often in the Thunderbolt. There are a couple of reasons for that. For one, my personal views on abortion tend to piss of both sides and that is one issue wherein you piss off either side at your own risk.

In addition, I am a member of the male half of our species and — while I have a voice — I also think that abortion is one issue wherein the voice of the ladies needs to be given preeminence.

With those caveats established, while it is possible to have a reasonable debate around at what point an inanimate clump of cells becomes ‘human’ — it seems very obvious to me that this transformation happens sometime a long time after conception and that it happens sometime a long time before birth.

However, while it seems obvious to me, evidently for nearly everyone else — not so much — which leads us to the first of the many minefields that one must navigate whilst approaching the abortion issue: Neither side is capable of rational debate. Neither side is willing to give an inch on their respective reactionary views about when that clump of cells becomes human, for instance.

In spite of that, I also think the positions of both sides are understandable. Most anti-abortion activists are convinced that fetuses are babies and thus that there a mass slaughter of babies happening. My ex-wife falls into this category, so I have had some up-close inside personal insights in that area.

If you thought that there was a mass slaughter of babies happening then you would probably be pretty upset too.

Pro-choice activists, on the other hand, view abortion restrictions as a bunch of old white men trying to control their bodies and to control one of the most important and most personal decisions it is possible to make — and this assessment is 100% accurate. If a bunch of creepy old reactionaries were trying to legislate what I do with my own body and if they were trying to criminalize one of the hardest and most agonizing personal decisions of my life then I would probably be doing a lot worse than most of the current crop of pro-choice activists are currently doing let me tell you yes sirree bob — so there!

Thus, when it comes to the abortion issue, my instinctive tendency is to just not go there — but I gotta go there now because the United States Supreme Court (made up mostly of creepy old white men) just took on an important abortion case concerning the Draconian restrictions that Texas state laws have recently placed upon abortions resulting in most of the women’s health clinics in Texas closing down resulting in vast swaths of that vast state having no specialized health care for low-income women. (Women with money — as always — will be just fine of course…)

The mere fact that this court agreed to hear this case is scary as hell in and of itself.

While Washington State is heavily pro-choice — meaning that this case isn’t likely to directly affect you local ladies anytime soon — an assault on the rights of one is an assault upon the rights of all. That means that while there may be no immediate effect, this greatly increases the chances that creepy old white men might soon be appearing in a neighborhood near you…

Meanwhile, low-income females unfortunate enough to live in certain areas of Texas might well soon need to start disinfecting their coat hangers.

Stay tuned…

Gaza: To Know the Facts is to Lose Impartiality

This is an excerpt from an article that was written by Daniel Day Lewis. (Yes, the movie actor.)

This is a state of apartheid. It’s taken me less than a week to lose impartiality. In doing so, I may as well be throwing stones at tanks.

In the Gaza Strip the Israeli army reacts to stone throwing with bullets. It responds to the suicide bombs and attacks of Palestinian militants by bulldozing houses and olive groves in the search for the perpetrators, to punish their families, and to set up buffer zones to protect Israeli settlements. MSF’s psychologists are trying to help Palestinian families cope with the stress of living within these confines; visiting them, treating severe trauma and listening to their stories. Their visits are the only sign sometimes that they have not been abandoned.

Israel’s tanks and armor-plated bulldozers can come with no warning, often at night. The noise alone, to a people who have been forced to suffer these violations year after year, is enough to freeze the soul. Israeli snipers position themselves on rooftops. Householders are ordered to leave; they haven’t even the time to collect pots and pans, papers and clothes before the bulldozers crush the unprotected buildings like dinosaurs trampling on eggs — sometimes first mashing one into another, then covering the remains with a scoop of earth. Those caught in the incursion zone will be fired on. Even those cowering inside their houses may be shot at or shelled through walls, windows and roofs. The white flag carried by humanitarian workers gives little protection; we’ll have warning shots fired at us twice before the week is out.

http://razanghazzawi.org/2009/01/06/daniel-day-lewis-on-gaza/

While on one hand it is awesome that someone of Daniel Day Lewis’ stature is speaking out on this, the oppression he describes is actually quite mild compared to a lot of the other things that go on there.

If Mr. Lewis thinks everyday life in Gaza is harsh, he should visit during one of Israel’s semi-annual mass-slaughters of civilians, for instance…

I am working on a couple of longer pieces but neither of them is done yet — so that’s it for the Thunderbolt this week — meaning…

It’s time to get to work! Yippee!

1B) SB 6173 Information

This came from the Environmental Priorities Coalition:

Climate action opponents are at it again. While Washington State is trying to put into place rules to help us meet our existing carbon pollution limitations, the state Senate is considering banning these kinds of important rules. Without this rule or other significant climate action, there’s no way we’ll meet our carbon pollution limits.

We need your help now. Will you contact your Senator and tell them to vote no on SB 6173? Tell him or her you think it’s high time our state’s biggest polluters do their fair share to help protect our environment.

If SB 6173 passes, it will prohibit the governor from creating limited regulations to help us meet our carbon pollution limits and protect our public health. After an unprecedented wildfire season where even the Olympic rainforest burned for weeks, we simply cannot afford more inaction.

Washington State has a lot to lose from climate change. That’s why we need to lead the way to a clean energy economy.

Contact your Senator right away and tell them that SB 6173 will set us back. Tell him or her you’re counting on them to Safeguard Our Environment and vote no.

This dangerous legislation can be brought to a vote at any time. We must act quickly to stop it.

Thanks for all you do,

Cathy

1C) I-735 IN THE BAG! SUCCESS!

This came from WAmend:

JUST HEARD TODAY – I-735 Certified!!!

WAmend was just notified by the Secretary of State’s office that Initiative 735 turned in enough valid signatures to be certified and is on its way to the legislature.

We hope to be announcing the dates for hearings in the state House and Senate soon. The hearings will provide an opportunity for legislators to hear that voters in Washington State deserve to learn about the importance of the initiative and to vote on it in November.

Thanks to everyone who made it possible to get this far. Fix Democracy First looks forward to the campaign to make Washington the 17th state calling for an amendment to overturn Citizens United and its progeny.

1E) Update from West Central Park Project

This message came from Alicia:

There are still a few spaces left for our Mini Bird and Bee House workshop. We will be building small mason bee houses and simple bird houses with all natural materials. We invite to come build one for your own backyard and one to donate to the West Central Park for fundraising. Let us know if you’d like to sign up!

Exciting plans are brewing for new pathways, new lighting and a new gazebo for the park!  Would you like to be involved on the planning level? You don’t have to be on the Park Board to help shape the future of West Central Park.  There are many ways you can interface with the visioning process by helping out at the Sunday Work Parties or joining one of our committees.  The Fundraising, Arts and PR committees are waiting for you to lend your skills. This little community green space needs you to complete it! Connect with us on Facebook, and at aparkforus.org to find out more about how you can plug in to this dynamic project.  See you around!

2) Film Screening and Discussion: This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein

Sunday January 31st from 1 to 4 pm @ North Thurston High School, 600 Sleater Kinney Rd NE

This message came from Patricia:

Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis’s movie

This Changes Everything

Powerfully showing the connection between capitalism and the coming climate chaos, and our opportunity to seize the crisis to transform our failed economic system into something radically better.

When:        Sunday January 31.  Doors open 1:00 pm.  Movie starts at 1:30 pm.Community discussion starts at3:00 PM.

Where:      North Thurston High School’s Koval Performing Arts Center,600 Sleater-Kinney Rd. NE, Lacey, WA 98506.

Sponsors:   Olympia FOR’s Climate Crisis group, and many other local activist groups including the Green Party of South Puget Sound.

After the film:   A one-hour community discussion about what local people could do to address the climate crisis.

Directions:   From Martin Way, go north on Sleater-Kinney Road NE, turn right onto 6th Ave NE, and enter parking lot.  Our friendly greeters will point you toward the right building.

Admission is free, but we suggest a voluntary donation of $5 per person to help us cover our costs for renting the building and the film.

Movie Information: Filmed in nine countries and five continents over four years, This Changes Everything is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change. Inspired by Naomi Klein’s international non-fiction bestseller,This Changes Everything, the film presents seven powerful portraits of communities on the front lines, from Montana’s Powder River Basin to the Alberta Tar Sands, from the coast of South India to Beijing and beyond.Interwoven with these stories of struggle is Klein’s narration, connecting the carbon in the air with the economic system that put it there. Throughout the film, Klein builds to her most controversial and exciting idea: that we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better.

The Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation’s Confronting the Climate Crisis group appreciates the help from Seattle’s Meaningful MoviesProject for getting the film here.  We intend the one-hour follow-up community discussion to help mobilize people and build a larger network to take positive local actions on climate issues.   While the recent global climate summit in Paris was useful, the real action must be organized from local grassroots levels worldwide, including right here.  We invite you to connect with these co-sponsors that are now doing the meaningful work on the ground locally:

4) Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day

Tuesday February 2nd @ Washington State Capitol, 416 Sid Snyder Avenue SW

This message came from WLIHA. Real Change is also involved in organizing this event:

Let me tell you why I participate in Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day.

For the past 15 years, I’ve been in the thick of things in Olympia as the lobbyist for the Housing Alliance. And take it from me – when big lobby days happen, legislators take notice. This is especially true for Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day.

Our Advocacy Day is one of the most effective lobby days for several very important reasons:

1 – We show up with a strong, cohesive message for lawmakers: everyone should have the opportunity to live in a safe, healthy, affordable  home. Everything we do on this day reflects that simple fact.

2 – We stand out. Wearing those bright red scarves, carrying red folders with impassioned messages on them. We get noticed.

3 – 600 people rallying on the capitol steps is just downright impressive.

Can we bring 600+ people together on Feb 2 to fight for affordable homes and an end to homelessness? I think we can.

But you need to register!

When housing and homelessness advocates come together to make their voices heard, I get very excited. If you have a good meeting with your legislator, it can lead to them calling me and saying “My constituents are really fired up about this, what can I do?”

You do your part, I’ll do mine. Together we can make a big difference.

Thanks, see you next week,

Nick
